Reverse Standings Thread
QUOTE (Soha @ Jun 10, 2017 -> 04:00 PM) I might be alone in this, but I sort of expect the Sox to be worse next year than they will be this year. There's still some solid talent that has to be moved. From Quintana and Shields, to the bullpen guys, Frazier, etc. Specifically though - when they don't have guys like Swarzak, Kahnle and Robertson to button down leads late....then it's really going to get ugly. Def possible. See the Phillies regression.

2017 MLB DRAFT
Kendall, who looks awful, ropes a single to center for the first run for Vandy, steals a base and takes third on an error, then generates a run on the following grounder to 2nd.

6/10 Games (Giolito and Hansen)
He'll move up with the draft. Relax.

6/10 Games (Giolito and Hansen)
Guerrero with 2 hits including a double, and one walk in DSL. I missed that Trey was back in Birmingham. Overall a pretty nice night on the farm. Stephens/Giolito with nice starts, Hansen with more dominance, and overall decent offense.

June 10th Game Thread: White Sox @Cleveland Indians
Holmberg just has the looks of that left gander that somehow sticks in league forever. Pretty nice results for us so far.

Painful and Difficult situation
I think it would be easier to draft him if this was not a "revelation". It's true you can't just marginalize these offenders who have served whatever sentencing to no careers, but I don't recall it being an activity they grow out of. Him being so young is the tough part, but it's such a grotesque crime that upends the lives of the victim. I don't know how I'd feel if I was the victim and knowing this person could make the highest level of sport with all that fame and money. It just seems off, I can't really see drafting him.

2017 MLB DRAFT
If you want to take a market efficiency approach to the draft, you can't just assume every player ends up at the same production in the same position. If you look at the analysis of college/high school 1b, tell me how they stack up in mlb production vs others.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Jun 9, 2017 -> 01:27 PM) It seems odd to me that it would cost 10x as much in a country like France, but I can assure you one thing. It is not the professional services (engineering services) driving this cost discrepancy. We are paid well relative to other professions as a whole but not THAT well and typically account for only ~10-25% of the entire project cost depending upon complexity. And it's not like France doesn't have public unions. That's why a report is necessary. We know that the buy american laws are so hamhanded they are causing some cost issue. But I'd guess some other mix of NIMBY, supply regulations, and poor decision structures are creating it. But LA just did it a lot cheaper. So that's why it may be something solveable.

Kiermaier out 2 months - Don't slide into first kids
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2017 -> 12:31 PM) I missed it, how did he hurt himself? Abreu caught it behind the bag, had to beat the pitcher, Kiermaier decided to slide and did it last minute at full speed and basically caught his foot on the bag. Abreu sure seems to be involved in a lot of these.

President Donald Trump: The Thread
You know what's a small thing that annoys me to an outsized degree, but for seemingly no reason at all a report that was aimed to understand the cost discrepancies between New Yorks subway expansion to other cities/countries was defunded, so in the future if a big dense city wants to do an infrastructure project it doesn't know why it costs 10x per mile to do it in US v. France

2017 MLB DRAFT
QUOTE (Buehrlesque @ Jun 9, 2017 -> 11:05 AM) Two questions for people who are more familiar with some of the draft prospects: 1. Concerning Jeren Kendall's swing-and-miss issues: Does he have a good hit tool but happens to make a lot of outs on Ks (like Moncada), or is it that his hit tool isn't good and thus he strikes out a lot? 2. Taking out defense, who has the better overall bat: Evan White or Pavin Smith? Can only answer 1 - lots of debate. Law has said some teams consider him a 30 hit tool because of his swing and miss. Others would say he's like a Moncada (but I think TA is more helpful as Moncada has a fantastic eye and walks a lot), where he will always strike out, but he'll have good power, speed and defense.

Brexit
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 9, 2017 -> 10:51 AM) Interesting on how Northern Ireland politics are changing. More with labour on the new vote as well as the new PM. That's actually a different shade, DUP, which I think is pledged with the Tories.

2017 MLB DRAFT
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 9, 2017 -> 10:45 AM) Frank Thomas was 1B only, and not a good one. I think that pick at 7 worked out well. If they can hit, who cares? Besides, with the launch angle becoming a big thing, I think infield defense importance is going to start dropping a bit. If we take a 1b that high I want them to be saying it's because he has a frank thomas/hof bat. If their ceiling is top 10 1b bat, there is just too much room that if they come under that projection at all they are fairly useless.

NCAA basketball thread 2017-18
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 9, 2017 -> 05:55 AM) Fair enough. this is much better of a target but still underwhelming to most of the fanbase. Head faking with McDermott makes this look like a good hire but I was still holding out hope for Donovan Your fan base is insane. Not only incredibly classy person but took on the job after one of the best performances ever and continued to compete nationally in a state where they are 3rd in pecking order.

**ComeyMania! Thread**
Interesting how COmey saying he didn't recommend a special prosecutor because the case had nothing to it and it would imply it did. He thought he solved it by being harsher than his own report said, but just created a different scenario where people thought the FBI wanted to prosecute but felt they couldn't to a high profile individual. Unforeseen consequences would be a good title for a Comey book.

Reason #6000 why I'll never console a down on OSU happenings from Rock, they are about to hire Chris Holtmann from Butler who is both very good and seem d unlikely to ever leave that incredibly close knit family culture there.

2017 MLB DRAFT
Seems a little far fetched. Would be somewhat surprised if Faedo goes top 10, would be very very surprised if both Faedo and Canning go top 10, just from aggregating all the other rumors. BUt who knows.

**ComeyMania! Thread**
Maybe it's also overly simple to think criticism of a person's acts means you completely invalidate their entire character? Lindsey Graham is often hardheaded and wrong when it comes to foreign policy, he also is a serious person who I think is capable of doing good things occasionally. If I praise him for doing something I find admirable, it doesn't negate my previous criticisms. It's almost like the world is complicated. Comey's history with Ashcroft's bedside proved to me he's not a partisan hack, but it doesn't mean he's not political. His adherence to a vague duty to report is questionable over whether it overrides longstanding policy to not report on ongoing investigations. He made a political decision that the FBI could be looked at as tainted if he did not report the duplicate Weiner emails prior to the election, even if it was the correct protocol to not report it. Yet he was also a very capable person of running a high level investigation. Two things can be true. Crazy.
