  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 10:19 AM) Ultimately, whatever package it is, the White Sox rank the prospects a bit differently from the publications, and they have to be right. Yes. In July, had we sent Sale for a package surrounding Gary Sanchez I would have been very skeptical. Now - totally plausible. Scary relying on a front office who just traded for James Shields to get good value back, but I stand by statement that they are capable of doing hte right thing but have made the wrong decisions because of bad strategy. Trading Sale for surplus of talent would be beginning of showing they have sound strategy and are capable of doing the right thing. Or - it would be just like the Rams. Made the right trade once, but still incapable of team building anyway.
  2. I don't want to trade Sale for a bad package. Yes, that return the Marlins received for Cabrera was bad and would really hurt as a white sox fan. But we just had someone argue Mike Trout isn't good enough return for Sale. Our diagnosis of bad is going to be subjective. But I think we all agree that some we expect mixtures of top 25/top 100/wildcards to come back. Where I disagree is the tendency to act like all top 25 talent is flat and = in value, where I think certain top ten talents are so good you take less back around them. Others are certain we need to salt the earth of the teams we trade and I just can't get behind that being necessary.
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 09:56 AM) It's pretty much an unprecedented trade to give up an ace signed cheaply for 3 more years. I really don't know if teams would be able to pay that much more than they would if he had 2 years left on his deal, which seems to be when guys get dealt now, and usually at a higher payroll number than Sale requires. To me there is a limit on what teams can and will give up. Yes, he might be less valuable next year, but that doesn't necessarlly mean the package to acquire him will be less. I am taking the chance that this 2016 class really is as good as it looks. With that in mind this is a good time to sell as you could have that wave of talent arriving in 2019, all young and cheap and can supplement with FA $.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 09:22 AM) I think most of SA and Australia have compulsory voting. An over-emphasis on Presidential races definitely doesn't help "off" year turnout. I'm surprised by Australia but for some reason I find it more acceptable for parliamentary voting, so long as punishment is no more than a kick in the bum.
  5. I just want to reaffirm - the problem is what we all would consider overpay. I have seen some incredible packages talked about that people felt was too week and added 2-3 more top prospects which to me is just too unlikely to even bother with.
  6. OTOH Brazil mandates voting and that is a much worse system.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 09:11 AM) Honestly I don't care about it either way, but when the conversations turns to a holiday or moving the date being something that would increase turnout, I don't see it being true. Even with having an entire month to vote early, people still don't make the effort. I don't see any of the other solutions around changing the election date fixing anything either. People who want to vote, figure it out. Those that don't make up excuses to not vote. Yeah. I mean, I think it's obvious if you were starting a system for voting *today* you would likely not choose the first tuesday in november, but providing early vote with an ample array of places seems like a good enough system.
  8. I'm not sure "increased turnout" is even a mandatory goal for updating election restrictions, making it more convenient for people to vote (even if they would have anyway) is also nice.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 7, 2016 -> 08:58 AM) We already have had posters say the Sox blew it by not trading Sale and Quintana at the deadline even after it was reported Benetendi and Moncada weren't on the table. The reality is, unless it's an obvious overpay, if a trade is made involving these guys, there are going to be calls for RH's head. And if no trade is made, it is going to be widely assumed they turned down an overpay. That anyone would even consider Mike Trout too little for Chris Sale, it's hard to imagine a Sale trade getting universal praise. The "x wasn't on the table" stuff requires skepticism. The other reporting is that the sox were adamant on one of their ML players (likely Bradley) as part of the deal and they never really progressed. For many like me, ML-proven talent is not necessary to the deal, as I'd prefer we get "near the bigs" prospect stars like Benintendi/Moncada. Heck, Benintendi then did pretty well in his two months and may be as hard to get as a Bradley. What you gain in assurance that you are getting at least one solid piece back, you lose in possible quantity. Not everyone sox could receive in a package may make bigs. But having more prospects in system still provide ammo to supplement young stars with proven talent.
  10. I think if we get past the politics around early vote, I think the 2 weeks prior to ED plus regular ED (for the sentimentalist) should work well. This is the first time where it's hard for me, having a newborn. We voted on Saturday to make sure it wasn't a struggle to wake up and get moving in the morning on Tuesday.
  11. Hard to overpay for Trout. And if you think getting Trout back for sale is too little, you will not be happy with any return.
  12. If someone put food they had made for you in front of you you would refuse to eat it? That's incredibly rude.

  14. Wish I could have done phone bank shift after this news
  15. Comey has advised congress that the review has been performed and no changes to FBIs July statement on Clinton. Pete Williams said all emails were duplicates or personal. Probably why you don't comment on ongoing investigations.
  16. I missed yesterday's game, this one was painful.
  17. Man. It's like the monstars drained away their talent suddenly.
  18. A tale of two weeks. The movement off ball has stopped. The transition points aren't coming as freely.
  19. Had fun doing a phone bank shift. The technology is still awkward as ever.
  20. Reminder that you can participate in GOTV at home: https://www.hillaryclinton.com/start/ If you are nervous - call voters in New Hampshire or Virginia
  21. I sympathize with him in that the things he points out are historically true but this year has certainly been strange with the decline of quality polls and severe decline of quantity of polls in anything other than florida, ohio and national. And with that I think he has overstated them while not focusing on any of the fundamentals that would appear to be more stable.
  22. I'm mentoring some kids and set up an "internship" where they can come to my office once a week until december to learn professional skills for class credit. It started today, and I thought they'd be coming at 10. And of course now with my new kid I am late to everything so I didn't even get in until 930 only to find they had been waiting in my office since 830. On top of that, the front desk person, who knew they'd be coming, was out temporarily, and the person who was covering thought they were food delivery people. Great start! I bought them taco bell at least.
  23. Ugh that looks so good. I'm very jealous.
  24. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Nov 2, 2016 -> 03:10 PM) The bolded is what I'd do. I don't really see the point in getting rid of Cutler sight unseen. It's not like they need the cap space, they have tons because of the rebuild. I agree, especially now that cap hits are so low. The exception is if he has more trade value than realized
