White Privilege?
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 10, 2015 -> 01:46 AM) p.s.: I will say this. Most college students are proud of the university they decide to attend. I thought it kind of sad that the Missourian student newspaper ran an article with 15 pictures of individual students all commenting on "how racism has affected me at Missouri." I mean is the University of Missouri a fricking hellhole racist pit of scum?? How can they attract any future students when the student body is completely turning on its own school, saying basically it's a miserable place to be for any minority??? Tough times at Mizzu. http://mashable.com/2015/11/09/mizzou-camp...k/#qBd3NFOXHGqF She worked at the paper to me. I think it's important that many of the students who are even talking about these experiences will in general terms probably love their experience, school and people they met. The racism at missouri was probably not very different from many other campuses (see Yale where similar stuff is happening), but these smaller incidents add up, or another group will come in asking why this is still happening. If you were to ask me, I would say that Columbia is a very progressive, warm and welcoming place. But these incidents made me look back and think of some awful incidents of black friends or classmates that i could obviously largely forget about, but were probably very affecting of them. But going to Juana's article, the idea that you could be proud and love something that doesn't always quite accept you sounds like the American experience for many.

I have to say that was a remarkably good summary 4 paragraphs in.

2015-2016 NFL Thread
It certainly seems like a big strategy to cover up defenses limitations is to own time of possession as much as possible. It makes sense, as last year the team would be behind 30-0 at halftime in large part due to so many unsustained drives in the first quarter.

5-3 basically asks they had won every close game. I'm surprised there hasn't been a game where they put it all together and ice a team.

Yeah while I've liked some of Gase's game plans I have a hard time believing anyone is watching the offense (which has loads more talent than the defense) and is like "yes he is great". Despite having gigantic targets like bennett, wilson and alshon, we somehow cannot convert in the red zone.

This is unreal. What's our red zone percentage?

Sox to go trade route possibly
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 03:57 PM) I remember attending a Sox game in Seattle with Felix Hernandez against Phil Humber. Carlos Quentin hit a laser homerun to left field off the King. Humber was dueling Hernandez and Sox lost 3-2 when Thonrton blew it with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th And I saw Dylan Axelrod actually outduel King Felix,

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 9, 2015 -> 12:54 PM) Dion Lewis = torn ACL Judging from the reaction, the Patriots are the only team in the league that deals with injuries. Hard not to feel bad for lewis, who could have landed a "Set for life" contract if he kept it up.

2015-16 NCAA Football Thread
I read rockmnation daily and follow all of the sportswriters covering mizzou at the columbia daily tribune and occasionally the Missourian. None of those were vehemently against the strike. They were thoughtful if not always committal in their opinion. The only place I've seen strong opinions are on twitter replies, and this whole element that believes that college athletes are ungrateful in general that just seems to pop up in these situations.

I'm not sure how to gauge the majority of the missouri fan base. I think any time you try and jump into a complicated situation that has been developing for months after the fact by reading a single news article and then start claiming the football team is the real racists and that all of this stuff is no big deal is ignorant. I think the latching on of colege students to the idea that getting the authority figures to create some sort of deus ex machina rule that solves "community" issues is immature and naive. On the other hand, this isn't the Yale stuff. This has been going on for months. Saying "oh its not about that" is a weird thing to say when you didn't even know about it until saturday.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Nov 6, 2015 -> 12:13 PM) I find win probability fascinating but I agree with both of you, it doesn't enhance the watching experience to get the numbers. The one exception: I'd like to see a fullscreen WP graphic every time a manager calls for a dumb sac bunt. This is actually a very interesting use which I'd like. But when the cubs were in the playoffs and bernstein was tweeting like "cubs now have a 65% probability of winning", it was like, cool, should I watch.

Question: more and more, win probability is being mentioned in game. While I find win probability interesting retroactively to see how impactful a specific play was, I find in game it is a stupid stat. Wondering what other people think. I hope it goes away.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 6, 2015 -> 11:07 AM) Agreed. And at a higher level, really, it should just remind people why the country needs to be much less quick to jump to military action. The problem is do people even think we are engaged in military action in Yemen/Syria/(pakistan)? The status quo is that these are basically perfect in that there are no soldier lives at risk and no long term commitment. We are talking about a situation largely absent of what we think of military action.

Technology catch-all thread
Did HTC ever update zoe so that you did not need to hold down for the full time? These are so much better done than what was on htc one m7 because its not out of your normal usage. With zoe it was just like...okay, so it's a video?

The Democrat Thread
There have been enough of these in the drone era that you'd really hope there was a lot of reevaluation of what the circumstances need to be for these types of attacks. Unfortunately we will not know if that's the case because there is not that transparency. But, the loss of innocent lives in hospitals/schools/weddings is really piling up (intended), and there needs to be a discussion on whether that is justifiable.

Fangraphs Free Agent Predictions-Dave Cameron.
I agree on Kendrick. I think it's long-term foolish, but if they truly want to go at it again, upgrading at 2b is easy pickings offensively. I really would like to have us experiment with instead of trying to improve our offense, doing everything possible to help our SP succeed and hope for the best on offense. It didn't work for the mariners, but it increase the value of our SP in a trade and I think would have a greater "lighting strikes" quality to it if some guys have random career years.
