I'm pumped about Mauk though. But Pinkel is pretty loyal to seniors. Mauk is less accurate but way more explosive.

QUOTE (Boogua @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 02:45 AM) Franklin looks terrible. Why did they take out Mauk? Mauk plays a series every game. Franklin is a senior. Bowl games are exhibitions.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 07:51 PM) Last year's draft hasn't really yielded anyone good. MCW had a hot start, but he's come back down to earth now. He's around .500 for TS% and 100 for offensive rating. Surprisingly, the guy who's been the most efficient player in the draft is Tim Hardaway Jr, with a .586 TS% and a 114 offensive rating. Well, that's as expected, but I still think Michael Carter Williams will be "Good". He's still seems like he's gonna be a steals machine as he gets better, and his rebounding has been good too.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 11:17 PM) That is quite a lot to ask for and isn't all that easy. We have zero pass rush....zero. It isn't going to be easy to fix that. The dline is an expensive position and all this talk of taking a safety in the 1st round is absurd. We need to address the dline (DE and DT) prior to touching safety (and yes, safety is a major need but our dline was the worse in football). We also need to address the LB spot where we were horrendous. Basically Dline, LB, and Safety play was all well above average. Bostic/Anderson were bad; Conte/Wright bad; Entire dline, but Wooten bad, and Wooten gets a pass because he played out of position. Now you hope Bostic can get better but I don't think you can pencil him and Shea as starting LB's and we obviously keep Briggs. I buy keeping Peppers if he restructures to a more friendly deal, but think we'll make a push at Bennett and if that happens, you probably go Bennett/Wooten (and say buh bye to Peppers) but that means we have huge voids to fill in the interior line. Now if we can't sign a DE in FA, then it means we most definitely have to consider drafting one early. I would not be shocked if our 1st two picks in the draft are DT/DE. I fully expect the 1st 2 picks to be DT/DE/LB (a combination of such). I think at least one of our safeties will be back to be honest. I share your pessimism. I don't believe we require the total restructuring though seeing the Saints turnaround the way they have. I think schematically Tucker does not know how to create pressure, and it exposed us in the passing game, but I think in general they aren't awful in pass protection. But it is a problem that where we need the most talent is where it costs the most money. We aren't really getting good production on a cheap contract anywhere beside Jeffrey and I'm hoping Long. So the key is obviously drafting Mizzou dlineman because they are effing NFL BEASTS.

I think it's more likely scouts will see just how much help teams put to keep Clowney at bay, just how much they ran to opposite side, and just how much faster they schemed to get the ball out of QBs hands. He was a monster even this year. His numbers don't do him justice.

Elgin-O'Hare Expressway Expansion
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 06:41 PM) Bike trails are nice and all, but today is a perfect example of how narrowly focused they are. They are pretty much worthless for 2-3 months a year. That project is more than bike trail, it will lead to nice foot traffic for surrounding businesses and a boost in home values. It was unused land, absolutely a worthwhile project with minimal upkeep, unlike a road.

Elgin-O'Hare Expressway Expansion
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 06:59 PM) Bike LANES don't have so much of that problem, as long as they are cleared. And they could do the same for trails if they so chose. Reality is though, most riders use public transit or other options during the harshest winter days. And that won't change much in Chicago. One thing that I think is interesting bike route-wise, is that the City of Chicago has an ordinance that states, anyone who purchases or substantially improves a property along either branch of the Chicago River, is required to put in and maintain a paved walking/biking trail along their section of the river. The idea is that, this is cheaper than the city coming through and building it out. The bad news is, it could take 100 years before most of it is complete. At some point, they should look to complete the job themselves. if they they cleared it for snow like they do roads, you'd have a really nice set of arterial bike routes in and out of downtown, away from the dangers of car traffic. Would help everyone involved. As it stands now, there are few actual "trails" in the city for bikes. Sounds like Denver. There obviously is LSD trail for the N/S riders, and the west now has Kinsey. It's getting better, but Milwaukee and Elston should be converted. Elston is great but the road sucks, popped tires galore.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 07:19 PM) That could be an impact guy or two. At least this leaves the Bears with some money to make some deals the next few years. I'm ok with it. Yeah, the market for vet LBs has been non-existent, so I think we'll be able to boost that core easy, and may let us take a flyer on a frontloaded 4 year deal on a better quality S/CB/DL.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 05:05 PM) Re: it being better on TV, I went to a Vikings/Bears game a couple years ago and sat behind one of the goal posts in the Metrodome. I think I saw more of the "game" from that angle than on TV. You can actually see what the coaches are trying to do and you can see entire plays develop. The broadcast angle limits so much of the view to where the ball is you miss a lot. But still, there's no way in hell i'd go to a game if it were 10 degrees, let alone -10. I think 30's would be my limit unless it was a superbowl and the Bears were assured of winning it. That is cool. I actually prefer to sit in end zones for that reason. That said, I still prefer to watch at home, but would need to be paid to go to a game below 20 degrees. However, I can't find it, there was a great article about why football was best sport on TV, with that specific point about how when a pass is thrown, you not being able to see where the ball is going leading to a moment of anticipation that anything could happen on other end (one of reasons people like pass heavy teams). Said much better than me.
