QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 10:35 PM) I was at WSI during the Miguel Cabrera thing. The package over there, the final deal, was Gio + Danks + Fields (fresh off his rookie performance) + Sweeney. That was a nice package back then, but now that's definitely a haul. Tigers took DTrain though and gave up 6 players. I never liked Miller, but Maybin was one of these all-world type of prospects (who never became anything much obviously). They gave up some other interesting players, i.e. I believe Euglolio Cruz or some s*** like that, a big armed 100mph closing candidate who didn't do anything. The Marlins definitely should have taken our deal. And had they, I wonder if the Sox would have been willing to go to the immediate mega deal extension that the Tigers gave out. It would have been atypical of the Sox to say the least, but would have in hindsight been a terrific move. Wow I did not remember Danks being included at all.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 10:24 PM) And John Garland to Houston. Astros had the press conference ready to make the announcement and...it never happened. Forget who we were getting. That was nothing compared to when we thought Miguel Cabrera was coming to us only to have an hour go by and he was a Tiger. And man the proposed package we were sending to Florida was such garbage.

It's not like The Jordan Rules was a very flattering portrayal of Jordan and it didn't stick. Also remember when Sam Smith was a good writer?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 04:19 PM) I think it's closer to 10th best, but the reason you add him is so you can call him up and not worry if you ultimately end up losing him on waivers while not burning options for guys like Beck or Snodgress. Basically, if they need a guy for 1 start, and he just so happens to be fresh for the start, you can call him up. It's about a 1% chance that he is even used this year. I do agree with Dick that it's pretty empty depth. And also a guy who you are confident can get you to 5-6 innings so you don't burn your bullpen for the next week. Whether that 5-6 innings gives up 5-6 runs as well is not terrible. You probably give yourself a 30% chance to win while preserving a higher percentage chance to win in future games that week.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 03:50 PM) He surprised us with gems in May. Then June and familiarity came. He had a good start vs. Seattle, but that isn't very unique, and then the roof caved in. In his last 58 1/3 innings, he gave up 102 hits 52 ER, 22 BB, 32 K and 17 HR. No one was too upset when the Sox didn't offer him a contract. Now he becomes "depth". We are talking about an 8th starter.

Axe is back
Well at least with Axe you know what you are gonna get. You could win the game with a good offensive night, or he might surprise you with a gem. That's better than thinking a guy will respond well to the show and then gives up 15 runs (Arnie Munoz)

QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 01:35 AM) If GarPax are really trying to run Thibs out of town, they only have one choice: trade for JR Smith Yeah, maybe, but I feel like JR smith would be come an all star under Thibs. Frankly his offense doesn't hurt for shot first guys, as we saw with Nate Robinson.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 09:35 PM) GO GET THAT FIRST ROUND EXIT UNSTOPPABULLS! Honestly, I can't even be mad. As I said yesterday, some of these teams are as an organization trying to win and failing. I thought they'd never trade Deng, they did. They cleared money. They have a starting PG of DJ Augustin, they are giving significant playing time to Dleague players. I want the bulls bad this year but I also wanted them to have a good core for next year. The league is just too impossibly bad this year.

It does. I don't believe I will be checking much at all but i HAVE to instagram obviously. I'm mostly worried about work and if anything comes in I have to check as much as I can. Not sure how gouged I would be if I rolled with the straight up .002/kb pricing.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 06:38 PM) How often do those numbers end up being too high? We don't see that very often these days. Well, if it was Gammons I'd be less skeptical. But the small amount of teams in this, the posting rate, I don't know, just seems different than normal FA signing chases.

I'm not gonna put a whole bunch of stock into that tweet. Had it said "industry source with direct knowledge of negotiations" I'd listen. But this just sounds like some guy in baseball, saying what he's hearing. And if I was a team in negotiations, I may try to scare others out as well.

Technology catch-all thread
Looking for advice, not sure if here or travel thread. Going to Canada for 4 days this weekend. We'll be traveling around a bit so I'd like to have data on my phone to search directions and look up stuff to do rather than only have things queued up from wifi in hotel. Sprint offers some data packs for canada, $30 for 55mb. I use about 16/day here in US. Do you think I'd use more or less on vacation? My feeling is more but being conscious about data means I'd probably only look if necessary. Plus would not be streaming music to/from work like now. THoughts? There is a 16mb plan as well.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 03:54 PM) Personally I think they need a pretty strong personality and disciplinarian as HC. Schwartz let the inmates run the asylum and it ran right into the ground I don't know about "Personality", I think lovie was far and away the best choice for them because he runs such disciplined teams that players do not get tired of. But Caldwell is such a LOL move. Regardless of losing Peyton Manning that colts team should not have looked and played as bad as they did.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 03:20 PM) It is when everyone thinks that the Bulls are easily going to tank and not make the playoffs. It is just f***ing stupid to even say that given the current state of the East and the Bulls existing roster (and the fact that we have the best coach outside of Pop in the league). Yeah, I agree. I really thought it was possible given how awful they looked in december, but also knew it was a matter of time. BUt when Deng was traded I thought the team would fold, but the thing that sealed it for me that we are screwed is that so many of these crappy teams that seem to honestly be trying to make playoffs are still so bad. Washington is actually trying and are 3 games under. Cleveland actually is trying and is awful. And teams that were trying like Boston is now free falling. Of the teams honest to god trying to get in I only guarantee Atlanta, Toronto (seriously), MIA and IND will make it. How Detroit has sucked like this in this conference, I don't know. So yeah, unless Bulls start Teague we are making the playoffs, probably as a 5 seed.

QUOTE (HeGone33 @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 05:37 PM) I'll repeat on the stats, talk to me in 12 months. There is not much of a gap there at all currently. Kap has been in the league 1 year longer, however has 9 less regular season starts. If you look at the 2nd half of this season, one player has improved and one has regressed, there is your reason. Kap had a horrible start to the season. It's a shame Wilson was consistent and couldn't have had improvement via sucking.

Expectations: Jose Abreu
I guess I need to temper my expectations. The only thing I expect is a slow start. I remember a thread here laughing about Cespedes April and calling him a bust before he broke out for his great rookie year. That adjustment time/cold is legit.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jan 12, 2014 -> 09:58 PM) What? If he was actually trying to sell a pound of weed, he's screwed. Da'Rick Rodgers went from 1st or 2nd round pick to undrafted because he was kicked out of school for smoking weed. In this case, we're talking about selling it. It's possible some team would give him a chance, but it will hurt him tremendously. He's going to have to do lots of damage control and he'll have zero margin for error. If he had kept his head straight, he would have been a high draft pick and making millions from the get-go. You're right, though. We do need to see what he's actually charged with. My statements are based on what has been rumored. From everything I've seen, i don't think it will end up being a distribution charge. It was found off of a traffic stop, he wasn't the driver and it wasn't his car. It seems he has some friends he needs to shed. Of off the field behavior, I just don't much care about this too much (unless he was selling a pound, but again, I don't think that will be the case). He seems to be a pothead, he's been arrested for crusiing, clearly. But compared to the s*** our basketball team had been doing in 08, if it's not violent or sexual assault, I don't really get too mad. Sucks if we lose him, but I don't think we will. I still hope he gets paid.

2014 Films Thread
I saw Her this weekend. I think it was my favorite film of the year for some reasons even beside the movie. For one, it was refreshing to see a film shot with soft lighting and bright colors that was focused in a city. For two, there was so many sidetracks this film could have taken that would have ruined it (angle of nobody talking anymore, it being a taboo that wasn't accepted, etc) that he ignored and hyperfocused it on this guy and his life. Spike Jonze's vision of the future was also incredibly entertaining.
