Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 06:38 PM) How often do those numbers end up being too high? We don't see that very often these days. Well, if it was Gammons I'd be less skeptical. But the small amount of teams in this, the posting rate, I don't know, just seems different than normal FA signing chases.

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
I'm not gonna put a whole bunch of stock into that tweet. Had it said "industry source with direct knowledge of negotiations" I'd listen. But this just sounds like some guy in baseball, saying what he's hearing. And if I was a team in negotiations, I may try to scare others out as well.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 06:23 PM) Surkamp's minor and major league numbers are both very similar to Axelrod's. Dylan Axelrod will win a Cy Young by 2016. Book it.

Yeah, I'm out at that price, but I still don't think he'll sign that high.

Technology catch-all thread
Looking for advice, not sure if here or travel thread. Going to Canada for 4 days this weekend. We'll be traveling around a bit so I'd like to have data on my phone to search directions and look up stuff to do rather than only have things queued up from wifi in hotel. Sprint offers some data packs for canada, $30 for 55mb. I use about 16/day here in US. Do you think I'd use more or less on vacation? My feeling is more but being conscious about data means I'd probably only look if necessary. Plus would not be streaming music to/from work like now. THoughts? There is a 16mb plan as well.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 03:54 PM) Personally I think they need a pretty strong personality and disciplinarian as HC. Schwartz let the inmates run the asylum and it ran right into the ground I don't know about "Personality", I think lovie was far and away the best choice for them because he runs such disciplined teams that players do not get tired of. But Caldwell is such a LOL move. Regardless of losing Peyton Manning that colts team should not have looked and played as bad as they did.

Axe is back
Dylan's always tried hard, started on moments notice and even gave us a few shocking wins. I'm glad he gets to keep his dream alive. I hope he doesn't have to pitch in the majors this year.

To defend that tweet, it's saying it's between two teams, but it seems to be saying dodgers have upperhand because "rumor has it his wife would prefer to be on west coast".

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 03:20 PM) It is when everyone thinks that the Bulls are easily going to tank and not make the playoffs. It is just f***ing stupid to even say that given the current state of the East and the Bulls existing roster (and the fact that we have the best coach outside of Pop in the league). Yeah, I agree. I really thought it was possible given how awful they looked in december, but also knew it was a matter of time. BUt when Deng was traded I thought the team would fold, but the thing that sealed it for me that we are screwed is that so many of these crappy teams that seem to honestly be trying to make playoffs are still so bad. Washington is actually trying and are 3 games under. Cleveland actually is trying and is awful. And teams that were trying like Boston is now free falling. Of the teams honest to god trying to get in I only guarantee Atlanta, Toronto (seriously), MIA and IND will make it. How Detroit has sucked like this in this conference, I don't know. So yeah, unless Bulls start Teague we are making the playoffs, probably as a 5 seed.

QUOTE (HeGone33 @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 05:37 PM) I'll repeat on the stats, talk to me in 12 months. There is not much of a gap there at all currently. Kap has been in the league 1 year longer, however has 9 less regular season starts. If you look at the 2nd half of this season, one player has improved and one has regressed, there is your reason. Kap had a horrible start to the season. It's a shame Wilson was consistent and couldn't have had improvement via sucking.

Expectations: Jose Abreu
I guess I need to temper my expectations. The only thing I expect is a slow start. I remember a thread here laughing about Cespedes April and calling him a bust before he broke out for his great rookie year. That adjustment time/cold is legit.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jan 12, 2014 -> 09:58 PM) What? If he was actually trying to sell a pound of weed, he's screwed. Da'Rick Rodgers went from 1st or 2nd round pick to undrafted because he was kicked out of school for smoking weed. In this case, we're talking about selling it. It's possible some team would give him a chance, but it will hurt him tremendously. He's going to have to do lots of damage control and he'll have zero margin for error. If he had kept his head straight, he would have been a high draft pick and making millions from the get-go. You're right, though. We do need to see what he's actually charged with. My statements are based on what has been rumored. From everything I've seen, i don't think it will end up being a distribution charge. It was found off of a traffic stop, he wasn't the driver and it wasn't his car. It seems he has some friends he needs to shed. Of off the field behavior, I just don't much care about this too much (unless he was selling a pound, but again, I don't think that will be the case). He seems to be a pothead, he's been arrested for crusiing, clearly. But compared to the s*** our basketball team had been doing in 08, if it's not violent or sexual assault, I don't really get too mad. Sucks if we lose him, but I don't think we will. I still hope he gets paid.

2014 Films Thread
I saw Her this weekend. I think it was my favorite film of the year for some reasons even beside the movie. For one, it was refreshing to see a film shot with soft lighting and bright colors that was focused in a city. For two, there was so many sidetracks this film could have taken that would have ruined it (angle of nobody talking anymore, it being a taboo that wasn't accepted, etc) that he ignored and hyperfocused it on this guy and his life. Spike Jonze's vision of the future was also incredibly entertaining.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 08:51 PM) @BNightengale - 2m - The #Dodgers, while confirming their interest in Tanaka, say they won't spend wildly on him, particularly with Kershaw about to hit FA Just my feelings but letting the agent of player looking at big payday know that you will not be outbid may be a perfect scenario where you bid against yourself.

I don't buy that he wouldn't come to US to be a star. He could be quietly dominant in Japan. Why come here if not wanting everyone to know you are the best?

NBA Thread 2013-2014
The Bulls have a President of Player operations who punched out a coach. Their medical staff nearly killed a player. The GM fired the coaches favorite assistant for talking s*** at a local charity event. They are not a well run organization. They do have a good mascot.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 06:45 PM) Haha Bmags..I was coming here to tell you all that I've decided Melo is going to sign with the Bulls. They will find a way to clear the additional cap room to be able to sign him as a FA. Melo, despite all the b****ing in New York, is clearly a tremendous scorer. He's never played for a coach who stressed defense. Not saying Bulls are champions with him, but that is a nice looking roster, especially if you can do it and find a way to bring our Euro over plus somehow end up with a lotto pick in this years draft. I think that would be a core that could potentially win. I also look at it as Melo, playing with guys like Rose, Noah, Butler (and coached by Thibbs) would might actually get his head on straight from a defensive perspective. It's interesting. Problematic for the bulls that despite knowing they have atrocious outside scoring, have tried to plug that gap with "3pt scoring man". And we keep swapping them out. You are only going to make marginal gains with your outside shooting by adding one 6th man 3pt specialist. They can be easily taken out of the game. But when you are talking about adding a SF with legitimate range and a PF with legitimate range (some assumption with Mirotic) it becomes an interesting lineup. But defense is going to take a huge hit. It seems like Knicks have tried to improve their achilles of no d effort by signing A D effort guy. Basketball team chemistry is complicated.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 06:23 PM) It's no coincidence Decker's stats skyrocketed once Manning took over. If he wants to get paid, he can go catch balls from EJ Manuel or Jake Locker. I'm sure Peyton can find a much cheaper replacement. Every receivers numbers would skyrocket after Tebow.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 05:12 PM) Whoa dude, you read way too much into my post. I have never, no ever will, blamed MJ for his father's death. I was just making a crack about how there's always something "worse" people could do. I could have gone with rape, but, that'd be too far even for me! Oh, nvm. Anyway, no one will ever replace Jordan culturally. Do you all realize the only reason Chicago is known outside of North America is because of Jordan? Say you are from Chicago and the only thing people know is "Chicago bulls! Michael Jordan!" If you are lucky they know Al Capone. Beside that the world knows LA for hollywood and New York for being New f'n York. Now that that's closed, I want to bring up something: Sometimes it seems like media driven narratives become reality just because people talk about it so much. I believe Sam Smith tried to do this for 12 years with KG to the Bulls but it never took. Which leads me to right now. Something that will not go away nationally despite making no sense and not a peep locally is this: Melo to Bulls Thibs to Knicks. It's. not. stopping. Is there more there than I realize? Is this just national media laziness?
