  1. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 21, 2010 -> 04:54 PM) Well, not very familiar with it, so went looking for some reports. Most were Cato and Heritage exulting the change, but here's one from the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Page 39 starts Sweden. Here's their view of the partial IRA plan: Since then, they've pared back the number of choices. Still, you're left with the inherent risk of investment, while social security is meant as insurance. We already have IRA and 401(k) and other tax-exempt retirement accounts people can use for investment in addition to SS. yeah they learned a lot from the pared back # of choices. The default plan has performed very well...and obviously a 3 year evaluation is pretty stupid.
  2. interesting enough we lived in a world w/o social security, and prior to it, the elderly were the most prone to living in poverty.
  3. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 21, 2010 -> 04:28 PM) Since it's more insurance than investment, you need everyone at the safe and secure level. Allowing opt-outs for risky investment throws off the balance. See: Sweden It's not free money to invest as much as choosing what bundle of stocks your money will be invested in to, add in a phase out into secure bonds gradually as you near retirement and it's not risk free but it's more choice and not terrible.
  4. I think you could privatize social security in ways that would benefit those who want to have a choice and reduce some risk.
  5. QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 21, 2010 -> 03:27 PM) The local Dunder-Mifflin office doesn't have to deal with the same issues soldiers in the field have to deal with. Perhaps only a small group of people believe a military unit in combat is different than organizations all over this country. That's a great example tex.
  6. QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 21, 2010 -> 02:27 PM) Why don't men and women in the military share the same quarters? Won't every answer to that also apply to two gay men or women, or even more so, a gay couple serving in the same unit? I think these are some of the challenges that the military must prepare for, if that is possible. Organizations all over this country deal with relationships in the work place.
  7. prices around me are falling rapidly, 30% off, 40% off, it's crazy. I can't account for it, but i don't think it's good for the economy.
  8. Whatev, the KC Fed chief has been crying about inflation his whole career. It's probably why he his where he is.
  9. Well, since they'll be serving with actual gay people that they've probably already served with in combat, they just now know they are gay, instead of hypothetical crusades to kill hitler with liberace, i think they'll be a bit more reasonable. Gays have already been serving in the military.
  10. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 20, 2010 -> 07:46 PM) By the way, on inflation... while its very low now, that will not last. Give it a couple years, and we will be seeing big inflation numbers. I've been seeing this for 3+ years now.
  11. with the military now a non-discriminatory organization, their re-integration to college campuses should mean even more good things for the military.
  12. I'm choosing to focus on the senators who decided to right a wrong than the people who tried to perpetrate it. This was really amazing, that two weeks ago, six months ago, this was dead in the water, and then in a rapid-fire four day span it's here. Once again, great job Harry Reid.
  13. It's official. A great day. Thanks Harry Reid.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 17, 2010 -> 11:05 PM) Well see about that. Those Congresses passed the Iraq war, the Medicare insurance company bailout act of 2003, and a whole ton of tax cuts, in addition to the general business of government. (You didn't say they had to be good things). oooo the general business of government? tell me more!
  15. imo more than the congress of 2002-2006
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 01:58 PM) The House passed, by an overwhelming margin, a standalone repeal of Don't ask, Don't tell, late last night. The Senate will once again attempt to take up this bill, but as with before, it is subject to the filibuster. Collins and Snowe are on board. We just need 1 more.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 01:28 PM) Hell, even if they don't bring another arm in: Thornton, Sale, Santos, Crain, Infante, Pena is a (potentially) solid 6 man pen, with a couple guys who can go more than 1 inning (Sale, Pena). I hope...bullpens are nutty.
  18. such nonsense
  19. yep. But that was in post #1. software patent trolls are hilarious. And they win. If you want to run a software company you need to buy every vague patent saying things you might be doing to prevent ridiculous lawsuits.
  20. you guys have any examples? I'm trying to change the world with this thread.
  21. We have serious problems in this country I hope we can stick to addressing them.
  22. Jesus reading the trib you'd think the pats were the greatest team of all time
  23. I disagree, I think majority rules is exactly the way things should pass.
  24. some pretty rich companies have had some pretty ridiculous patent trolling happen against them.
  25. QUOTE (danman31 @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 01:29 AM) Mizzou is really overrated. They're struggling against good, but not great teams and blew that Georgetown game. They might have the worst perimeter d in the country. i think you are wrong.
