  1. With LaRussa comes one of the few pitching coaches that are as good as Don Cooper.

QUOTE (Felix @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 08:41 PM) I haven't seen the movie (and I won't), but the book is fantastic. The movie looks like a bulls*** Hollywood version that makes white Christian women feel good about themselves. No thanks. That is very accurate to what it was.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 07:04 PM) Oh wow. That sounds awesome. I would have panhandled to go to that. haha you'd have been murdered prolly.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 02:29 PM) I'm pretty sure it is basically an exact remake. It'll make money, especially since I doubt it could have cost too much to make. Hm, just looked it up on Wikipedia. They have it set in New Mexico. I don't know why they would drastically change the setting of the film. I figured they would have it set in Maine or Minnesota. Odd, lots of films are made in New Mexico, perhaps the barren landscape can create an equally eerie atmosphere. I'll read some reviews and maybe I'll see this in a year. I imagine I'll just get frustrated though because I get a lot more annoyed with kid actors in English films because I have to pay more attention to their words pitch and delivery.

Yeah, that too. Just an awesome actor that either chooses great roles or makes lots of roles great.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 18, 2010 -> 07:11 PM) Well the good news is...we haven't spent time meandering around .500, we've actually been a solid team. The Twins have just been flat out great. They've got a legit shot at home field throughout the AL. Yeah but for a prediction in early june that was pretty spot on. The only thing I was wrong about was that it would be incredibly depressing as a fan, when I actually will look back on this season pretty happy.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 11:01 PM) Yeah, I've always wanted to check out Fabric. I had a subscription to their mix series for quite some time. That can be hit or miss depending on the artist. That's what I was going to say. I enjoy them for a listen but I think removed from the atmosphere and mood of a club they seem a little awkward. That'd be really cool to go to Fabric. When I was in Brazil they talked about taking me to this huge house festival on a beach that goes on for like 24 hrs straight but i would have been too poor to go anyway. It sounded pretty great though.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 06:24 AM) I had to split Chinatown viewings over two nights. I'm a tired old man, what can I say? But, damn what a fantastic film that is. Godfather Godfather II good. I think this and Cukoo's Nest have to be without question the defining films of Nicholson's career. Considering what it meant for his career I think Easy Rider has to be in that list.
  9. I gotta hang with Rock here. In one of the threads in june right when the winning streak started I remember saying something to effect of (paraphrase) I would hate to see us go on a 2001-esque run of 22-7 to get back in the race only to meander around .500, finish in second place 6 games back and have done just bad enough not to make the playoffs but just good enough so that no changes are made and we are complacent. I don't really feel that way. it sucks. but clearly 2007 was worse. I really did/do like this team. Omar vizquel was one of the highlights of my baseball sox fandom. He was an absolute pleasure to watch. Paul Konerko melted that cynicism of #s and brought back that boyish giddyness that drove me nuts about people with Rowand/Crede. Sometimes you just LIKE that you get to root for a player on your team. Even if there are better options. I've rooted for that guy from awkward stages in middle school to now adulthood. Every summer getting to root for him. It sucks that this will just be one of those years like the southside hitmen where I can say how much I enjoyed watching them, but that extra meaning and umph of a playoff run just won't be there. Oh well. Baseball will go on. I just hope This next decade brings more meaning than sentimentality.
  10. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 17, 2010 -> 11:08 PM) I wouldn't put Rand Paul in that category though. I mean he's stepped on his dick a couple of times, sure, but mostly he seems like he knows what he's talking about (not that I agree with most of his views but still). maybe, but when you act like you can speak intelligently on the history of the united states and fail miserably it's pretty hard to take you seriously after that.
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 14, 2010 -> 04:10 AM) Good article on the idiocy/racism of the D'Souza/Gingrich crap over the weekend. http://www.prospect.org/csnc/blogs/adam_se...aces_birtherism I was just going to talk about this. I am going to post a comment from Ta-Nehisi Coates blog, but I don't know how to link to a comment so I'll just link you to the main article here edit: the first paragraph is a question posed to Baiskeli by Ta-Nahesi. Baiskeli had identified himself as a native Kenyan earlier in the thread. What follows is his response. and another great commenter:
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 13, 2010 -> 02:52 AM) I think we'll see something really special on offense - more than we have ever really seen as Bears fans outside of short stretches while Erik Kramer and Rex Grossman were behind center. I, for one, am excited by what I saw, despite the near loss, and am very much looking forward to next Sunday. The amount of times I've thought this in my life...sigh.

saw the trailer for the american "let the right one in" today for the first time. Kind of looks like a shot for shot remake. I really don't understand the point of remaking this (except to make money), but that was a pretty popular movie by foreign standards here. And it's not like that audience will see this one.
  14. feds hammering holds a lot less weight after the blago trial.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 9, 2010 -> 09:59 PM) And you state this as though it's somewhere other than New York City, where 2 blocks of land covers enough space for tens of thousands of people to live and work. You know for me it always kind of goes back to my original thoughts on this whole thing, which was that 2 blocks is pretty far in a city. Entire neighborhoods can change in two blocks, it can go from good to bad in two blocks, nothing is related in 2 blocks. My friend just visited new york and went to go see where this was built and basically said the same thing. He walked 20 minutes to get there but he's hefty.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 6, 2010 -> 09:46 PM) The Twins cannot win games outside. Getting out of the dome is going to kill them. Thank God the Sox are 7-0 on this roadtrip. If they were 4-3, it may be time to play taps. It seems I was the only one that appreciated this. They aren't lucky. They've done this too long to be lucky. It isn't the dome. They have really solid teams. You could say we are lucky to have won 7 in a row coming from behind in a lot of them while giving up so many outs. The twins are a great offense with good pitching starting and bullpen. Teams like that tend to do well in the regular season.
  17. I'm at work today.
  18. QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 6, 2010 -> 05:11 PM) Greg you're speaking for hypothetical Sox fans you don't know. You think Soxtalk is rough? I think you'd be surprised to find what "regular Sox fans" think (I don't know why Soxtalk doesn't xount anyway) if you just started talking to random fans. They don't all think the same thing, and this love affair with Ozzie is kind of imaginary. Some love him some are sick of him and some don't care that much. Just like here. Also acting as if Rongey was somehow a voice of reason. He was the voice of the sox front office, that's it.
  19. This. There seems to be a lot of revisionism about what exactly people were arguing in april. Having Jim Thome on the team would have no adverse impact on Paul Konerkos MVP-contending season, it probably would have helped his numbers having a man on base in front of him more often.
  20. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 6, 2010 -> 03:59 AM) I really like Afalava, Shaw, LeFevour, Beekman, and Gilbert. Damn. What exactly was there to like about Gilbert beside that he jumped out of a pool? We've been drafting trash for 5 years now. Angelo either needs to get fired or replace all of his scouts.
  21. QUOTE (elgonzo4sox @ Sep 6, 2010 -> 02:59 AM) Paulie shouldn't DH all the time, since he is still very good in the field at first. He just can't play 162 games at first any more, as he proved again today and likely tomorrow, when a hopefully minor injury is preventing him from taking the field. So having him DH on occasion keeps his bat in the line-up. But in order for the rotating DH strategy to be implemented, you can't have a full-time "DH only" guy on the roster - you needs players like Kotsay and Jones who can also play good defense in the field. So how are the Twins doing it, with Thome as a part-time "DH only" guy? They lose a fielder from their active roster, but as we all know they have a seemingly endless supply of AAA call-ups who come up to the big league club to spell their major league fielders when they go down for a while due to injury or tiredness. I don't think the Sox have the same supply of talent at the AAA level. Thome wouldn't have played 162 games as DH so Paulie easily could have gotten those days of rest even with thome on the roster and we wouldn't have had to have the kotsay experiment.
  22. So, I'm to believe that Manny was pissed about sitting on the bench in LA, but requests it in Chicago after 4 games marty?
  23. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Sep 5, 2010 -> 02:28 PM) I think its because Manny has finally been able to work with a quality hitting coach like Greg Walker hahahahaha
  24. i think this thread won right? PAULIE PAULIE
  25. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 31, 2010 -> 06:32 PM) Its also such an inane poll and article. It basically says that the people most angry at the political situation, are angry at Obama. Well duh, he's the f***ing President. If it were BushCo in office, you'd see the exact same thing. Welcome to what the associated press covers.
