QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 12, 2010 -> 04:55 AM) I never thought I'd hear a King Crimson sample in a Kanye West song. you really shouldn't be, he's sampled krautrock legends Can and lame-rock legends Steely Dan. His love of all music is why he's one of my favorites.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 08:03 PM) Also, they are trying to enact laws/reforms that seem to target specific groups, which can be argued has little do with the policy being discussed in this thread. lol

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 06:23 PM) This isn't new - there was fear in this country after 9/11, and shortly after, a significant portion of "the Right" decided that using fear was a great way to get support. So, fearmongering became a major tenet of their marketing scheme. Cheney led the way. And the fear train continues to plow forward. i thought George Bush did a good job post-9/11 of reaching out to Americans who are Muslim. It's certainly taken a turn for the worse lately.

Attempt to cheer up White Sox Nation
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 03:04 PM) IMO, if you need cheering up after losing a few games, I am proud of you that you just got into baseball this year. This is a sport of failure and the team is going to lose at least 60 games every year, its just part of a baseball season. We are still in this for the long run. Oh what a crock. Is there a sport you don't think you are the best fan of?

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 05:34 PM) Yep, because the only immigrants in this country are brown. The only immigrants people are complaining about.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 05:30 PM) Why pigeonhole this to mexicans only? Pretty sure the debate has been "immigrants," which could be any race. Sureeee.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 11, 2010 -> 05:26 PM) Well, there is the republican party saying we should indeed close down the borders, or certain borders anyway. Not in this forum though, at least so far. And those are the people who are more likely to be motivated by racism. fixt. What else has come out recently beside this? I haven't heard anything about support for a guest worker program.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
If we were talking about the immigration bill Bush was supporting it'd be one thing, but that got killed. Pretty sure we are talking about shutting the border. This is silly, being born in a country = citizenship is a pretty good policy replicated world over. I can't imagine really creating a better law that would create less of a hassle.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
Because there's more to being american than being born here! you must also be living in the "bible belt", be salt of the earth, christian or Jews for Jesus, and tend to be...well, I'm getting ahead of myself. But, the point is everyone else is just sucking on the teets that the real Americans LITERALLY MILK EVERY DAY.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Soxy @ Aug 10, 2010 -> 05:01 PM) No, but I've been doing some Scholarship of Teaching and Learning work recently and one thing you find is that interventions don't work if the instruction is of poor quality. Take, for example, Service Learning where students go into the community and apply what they've learned. Only works if the teaching is high rated and the instructor seems to know what's going on. So, a poor teacher and poor learning outcomes do not magically become mitigated by some intervention. Without quality instruction as a backbone, there's poor student outcomes associated. Perhaps it is an unfounded generalization. but what about longer school days and shorter summer vacation

QUOTE (Soxy @ Aug 9, 2010 -> 06:49 PM) If the school is s*** quality more time in it won't help. I find that hard to believe.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Soxy @ Aug 9, 2010 -> 06:21 PM) It's very sobering. And very difficult for students and teachers. How do I make sure all of my students get the most out of their education when some are so unprepared and some are so far ahead. Frankly, I don't see this divide getting any smaller in the near future either. well, we could make school longer.

on the other hand, if you really cared, but you could only afford to get into a state school, it is pretty cool that you can instead take lectures from harvard.

Report: Obama to nominate Kagan to Supreme Court
I thought Bayh uttered words FOR it. Nonetheless, if they did it, it should be something where they phase it out in like 10 years.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 9, 2010 -> 04:15 AM) So I walked over to Colombus and Monroe and watched AF's set from across the street. I mean, when they were being drowned out by Soundgarden it was pretty good. They played almost everything off Funeral, but what was off the new record did sound awesome. New album is really great. I don't understand when people call this album boring, b/c i thought neon bible was boring while this album is pretty killer. I kind of want to just head out and go to HEALTH at reggies right now, but, i tied one on last night. Still recovering.

THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER
QUOTE (maggliopipe @ Aug 8, 2010 -> 06:49 PM) Great game! My last of the year but I ended the season at 6-0. I also walked past KW on the concourse and punched his arm (not too hard). At first I kinda got a wtf expression followed shortly by a smile and a nod. someone's getting traded to new york for a bag of balls.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2010 -> 09:03 PM) One thing worth pointing out in response... College costs are the only thing going up at a rate that makes health care costs look cheap. When we start talking about the disadvantages according to economic status...the last 30 years have seen massive increases in those disadvantages as part of conscious policy choices at the Federal and state level. Retirement packages other than Social Security have been eroded. Medical care costs have skyrocketed, and businesses that offer medical benefits have cut back. Average wages have eroded. Educational costs have gone up, and they've gone up without any sort of offset. These are deliberate choices in many cases. Some have described them as the "ownership society" plan. We finally have slapped a bandaid on the health care part...but that especially only does so much in our new 10% unemployment world. It would be encouraging and wonderful if the bachelors degree lost prestige in the next 30 years or at least some other higher education systems gain footing.

Films Thread
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 7, 2010 -> 04:48 PM) I'm stoked to see "Step Up 3D." I think it's funny with all these 3d movies trying to utilize the new medium artistically, step up 3d comes out to resort it back to gimmick status.
