Merkin: Marquez a "lock" to make the team
Interesting he'd put himself out there like that for no reason.

Everyone's a drama queen about pork
Oh jesus christ we're going to end up with a swiss model, the swiss model, that country where all the b****y companies *those 6 companies, you know, those galt companies that are so smart they left despite no real difference b/w here and america* and it will be incomplete and whatever but we will adjust. Blah blah blah blah blah. Earmark reform will never happen because its a stupid platform to run on, it's a stupid (i'm going to change things) platform that will never happen because everyone benefits from it. Oh f*** Utah for getting federal funding to reduce an insect that effects their agriculture I buy! f*** them! But thank you, I will take my new highway. We deserve it. I will re-elect you, congressman and senator, at a 94 percent rate. Go McCain! YOU FOUND THE PROBLEM! It wasn't deficit spending using emergency funds for two wars or not dealing with the entitlement spending! It was the 1% of the budget going towards social projects! That would've saved the doubleing of a 10 trillion deficit in ten years! YOU ARE SO GOOD AT MATH!

Add any player to the Sox
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Mar 12, 2009 -> 08:43 PM) A player that would seem easily attainable, realistically, and would fit at least one, if not many needs for the White Sox...Gregor Blanco. I wonder if Kenny Williams inquired about his availibility during the Javier Vazquez trade talks. He seems like an odd man out in Atlanta with Jordan Shaefer, Brandon Jones, Jeff Francouer & Jason Heyward as the future of the Braves outfield. That's Gregor Blanco, folks, CF, potential leadoff hitter, speedster, good defense, only 25. He's playing for Venezuela in the WBC if you want to check him out. You could add any major league player in the world, and you chose Gregor Blanco?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Mar 12, 2009 -> 10:25 PM) How is Dean an idiot? He became DNC Chairman, stayed out of the spotlight and quietly built a political ground game that netted them a huge majority in the house, nearly filibuster-proof majority in the senate and the executive branch, a party looking at huge favorable ratings, and meanwhile the minority party has just hired Michael Steele.

Sun Times in "most endangered newspapers"
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Mar 12, 2009 -> 09:41 PM) That isn't necessarily true either. The Wednesday Journal, which is an Oak Park local is either closing/selling a bunch of its affiliates. Mostly they are Chicago residential communities. For instance, the Wicker Park/Bucktown/Uk. Village one is being shuttered. The other ones, mostly north side, are being sold off and either closed or combined. Now the Oak Park, Forest Park, Riverside, etc. are fine. But, the print media, as a whole, are in trouble. That's a nice anecdote, but what he said was true. Those are all pretty close to the city and have overlapping markets. The Beacon, NW Herald, etc. are all doing fine. The problem with the big city dailies closing down is scary, but it's easy to get national news everywhere. Community news is specialized and unthreatened, really only dealing with rising paper costs, that most are solving with tabloid format/moving to morning delivery (saves costs). I had this really long post defining the future of newspapers that hit right as the site closed, and I'm not going to write that all down again. But, many of these large papers are in trouble because of dumb investments by their owners that had nothing to do with print. And finally, the Times is not in trouble. Yes, they are leasing in a building they built, a smart move that will save them millions. They have by far, the largest staff in the country, probably the world. They have maintained that staff through this. Are they in a crunch right now? Who isn't?

Keith Law on Viciedo, Poreda and others
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Mar 11, 2009 -> 12:45 PM) I think the Cardinals would call Reyes a disappointment. That's not what I meant. They have these pitchers and hitters that, seemingly, come out of no where, then fizzle just as quickly.

Sun Times in "most endangered newspapers"
It'd be a shame to lose the Miami Herald, along with the St. Petersburg Times, have really the only original latin American reporting not done by the AP. But yes, I agree we won't know what is lost until its gone. (not with the ST). All these blogs who ridicule newspapers will be feeling the heat when they have no articles to steal and then comment on.

Add any player to the Sox
If I were to look at the current construct of the team and pick someone to "plug a gap", I'd take Hanley. If I were to take the best player and be allowed to send Konerko or Thome down, It'd obvi be Pujols. Guy is clearly the best hitter in the game.

Is Beckham the new 2B?
QUOTE (GREEDY @ Mar 11, 2009 -> 04:15 AM) Even if you fellas are confident in Nix's defense, do you really think Nix is going to start enough games at 2nd to consider us ABOVE AVERAGE there defensively? Yeah, I mean, I can't see us splitting time at 2nd honestly. If Nix wins 2nd, I'd imagine he's going to be playing there a hell of a lot. And even so, your post was just confusing, considering we know Nix is good to great at second, and that Getz is supposedly average. So then shouldn't your rating be average/good, based on which wins?

Keith Law on Viciedo, Poreda and others
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 11, 2009 -> 06:13 AM) Yep, one and the same. I actually thought Reyes looked pretty good out there, but, hey, I'm not Keith Law, so maybe I'm wrong. Man, the Cardinals have so many odd, unrepeated success stories.

The Republican Thread
How is that not the point kap. Y2hh, you talking about someone besides Jim Cramer? Balta? SS2K5? You are defending someone you don't even like. You want to talk about fairness in media, fine...well then how about Jon Stewart, with a comedy show on comedy central, calls out a news station, CNBC, and specifically Jim Cramer. Jim Cramer then gets on 3 major news networks, NBC(Today Show), MSNBC (Morning JOe), and there is the entire network in question CNBC. Together, I'd imagine, they net a way, way, way higher % of televisions than Jon Stewarts, and allow Jim Cramer to stand up for himself, and convince people that at least he wasn't wrong about everything! And he can continue to sell his bad info for profit while his audience suffers. And NBC keeps their audience. Now that's good television. That's good synergy.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Mar 11, 2009 -> 03:25 AM) NO ONE saw what was coming. NO ONE. It's easy to b**** and pick nits after the fact. I love how the messengers of Barack's failures are now a part of the mainstream to assassinate the s*** out of them. Yea, this is a different breed of politics that we were promised all right. I think it's worse. Jesus Christ, this is not about assassinating the "messengers of Barack's failures" this is about media irresponsibility. You usually love this stuff. You don't even like Jim Cramer. You are defending him for really just argument sake. He's terrible at his job. CNBC is awful at analysis, and makes up for it with bells and whistles, unfortunately, this is LITERALLY BELLS AND WHISTLES. They report to a less educated financial crowd in a way that is not educational, but irrational, mob like and irresponsible. Is anyone here after Crain's? Is anyone out here after Bloomberg news? No, we all love them. They are just miles and miles above CNBC. Bloomberg dominates CNBC in Europe, in wire services and in business subscriptions. But CNBC has TV, and they got there with sensationalism. They have more shallow coverage than headline news, except they are dealing with people's money. They just parade CEOs up there and the CEOs all just say "we're doing great" and they say "oh that's excellent" and then BUY BUY BUY, or now SELL SELL SELL WE'RE F*****. Meanwhile, poor bloomberg news tried to make a network based off of no frills, all content. Bloomberg must not have researched broadcast news, people don't want quality information with context! They want a screaming man giving out information, good or bad. Okay, I'll give poor poor Jim Cramer a break on Bear Stearns. How about his nationwide lectures telling people to buy Sears when they were like triple their value, or to buy google at the height of their value. He's. Not. Good. At. His. Job. And its worst for him, because he's causing people to lose money.

Is Beckham the new 2B?
QUOTE (GREEDY @ Mar 11, 2009 -> 02:06 AM) My gut instinct is due to Nix's route to the bigs is that he isn't anything overly special at 2nd. more to do with his bat than his glove, which by all accounts rate him very high.

Is Beckham the new 2B?
it appears Nix is better than average.

Is Beckham the new 2B?
It makes sense, it's why Paul Konerko and Jim Thome never get criticized, but Jermaine Dye is always s*** on by us. edit: I realized maybe I should put GREEN

Is Beckham the new 2B?
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 10, 2009 -> 09:29 PM) 2B - Getz SS - Beckham CF - Ramirez Beckham and Getz play their natural positions and Alexei moves to a position he has handled in the past. With this configuration you limit the number of bad players you're plugging into these positions. If Alexei plays short there will be a bad player in center, if he plays center there will be a green but talented young player at SS. That's all. It's harder to find an excellent offensive player who can handle SS than it is to find one who can handle center. So for Alexei playing short would likely make him the most money and on most teams he'd be most valuable at short. However this team has another young player who looks like he's going to be a very good offensive player who can handle short. So to the Sox Alexei would be most valuable filling one of the other holes in the lineup (CF) while the other young shortstop takes his position. We weren't disagreeing, one bit. I was apparently setting you up nicely though.

Was the 2008 NBA Draft rigged to favor Chicago?

Is Beckham the new 2B?
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 10, 2009 -> 09:50 PM) Yeah, his personal value is at its highest when he's playing short (assuming of course that he doesn't suck defensively) but his highest value to the team would be in CF since we actually have some good, young middle infielders and really nothing of value in CF. Why move Beckham though, who has played SS for quite a while and likely could develop into a great SS, and move Alexei, whom has seemingly played outfield before for quite a while? Is Alexei's highest value to the team at SS?
