I understand, but I think there are reasonably productive things that students can do with a semester than spend the full 6-8k. Depending on what level they are in college, I know it would have been extremely difficult for me to do online any semester of junior or senior year. Many of my cores had a "work"-like component to it. Taking two of those in a semester would be quite difficult. It wouldn't even make sense to load up on 1-2 more electives as I'd still want to maintain full-time student status. I think a student deciding to skip a semester, stay home and save, and maybe try to work on a personal project, find a job, help out with younger siblings or parents in need will make a lot of sense. Some may have aid tied to continuous enrollment, and that is not an option. And also - higher ed had a reckoning coming, but it needs to be supported financially.

Maybe they are. These kids are thrown into a horrible situation, I think they deserve more understanding than mockery.

Well, if they think 2nd semester is more likely to be in person, they may skip paying full tuition for a semester for a diminished experience and just graduate in 4.5 years. Perhaps they could watch other peoples kids and make money. Maybe that could even be facilitated through a fed program like americorps.

A concern, the valuations of these companies have ezploded, but vaccines aren’t a huge money maker. And there will be losers.

Oxford/AstroZeneca reporter promising results again today. Them and Moderna continuing to lead, I’d probably put my money on Oxford who has a better track record.

Also you’d want to know the effects of opening a window (subways showed opening windows on cars was beneficial) and what freaking should have happened in April which is the fed govt helping scale production of medical grade air filtering to be installed in schools. Both could easily counteract with this purportedly smaller amount of viral exertion.

It’s 4th and 5th. And considering elementary doesn’t change classrooms it makes case that elementary school is most able to go in person for some days at least. That is what oak park is doing, split b/w HS (all online) and elementary (2-1-2)

I have a hard time speaking with total confidence on what’s happening in Illinois right now. I am disappointed in the growth in cases. Despite significant increases in testing, the positivity rate has increased, along with daily case counts. It is growing, it is. But hospitalization since since its low point in July 4th is, with today’s numbers, up just 1% 2 weeks later. That’s 3 weeks after the rise began and a bit more that that with reopening to phase 4. And despite not having tracers truly up and ready, I’ve found the DPHs at city, county, state level to be strangely confident. My one hunch is IL may be much better at actually testing problem spots. That by mid June it was very good at knowing how at risk population was (front line, etc) but missing some big community hot spots. Their mobile testing may very well be helping uncover better what was already there. Thats a hunch at least. Perhaps testing is now better aligning positives to previous hospitalization trends.
