KW: "It's a shame" the Sox are being portrayed as cheap
bmags replied to Jose Abreu's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Sorry, I should have quoted. Was responding to someone saying KW turned down a mully/haugh interview, and I was joking about it since they are among the easiest interviews in chicago media. -
I realize you want shortstops to be instinctual but these kids grow in these years and sometimes need to adapt to their new bodies. I just can't get that nervous over a lack of fluidity when he has such high marks athletically,

KW: "It's a shame" the Sox are being portrayed as cheap

while this is true, I think it can't be understated that baseball is not a traditional business. These people that own franchises do not want to have negative cash flow, but also aren't trying to suck actual wealth from the team. They get to have a cool toy that appreciates nicely, get interviewed and be a star, and try to compete. Jerry is a more old school owner though that was around when baseball was more volatile. He's carried those instincts despite the situation changing, and it hurts the white sox. He more than any other owner feels the need to police the league and fight down costs for league health, and if he has to sacrifice the white sox to do it, so be it. -
you can't really worry about that. They just need to keep hitting on draft picks, making smart choices with money, and wait for an opportunity to acquire one via trade.
-
well that was a very good phillies team that was winding down after a world series and another berth. The padres that made it in 2010 I dont think I could name you a single player on. Probably Adrian Gonzalez? Chris Young the less famous one? Phillies had a long slow expensive fall from 2012-15 but still had guys like hamels that you squinted and said maybe this expensive slow bad team will compete. Familiar in that way.
-
yet none of these things have anything to do with drafting, which is what people have said they are pretty good at, and you laugh and say "you think they are good at drafting? They nearly killed luol deng!"
-
What people are commenting on is how well the bulls draft. Everything else was answered. They are not commenting on acquiring or selling of draft picks. They are not talking about free agency signings. Or coach signings. Or medical team. They aren't saying the bulls are "very talented", you are making up arguments. Your comment was the bulls haven't drafted well in 10 years. Well, Butler was drafted 8 years ago in a draft with mirotic. Gibson was 10 years ago. They had a really horrendous draft with McDermott, valentine and teague were bad picks, but we are talking about picks outside the top 12. They vary. WCJ and Markannen look like good picks, with markannen as very good. Do me a favor, compare the bulls drafts to where they drafted and what was available. They compare that performance of the last 10 years to other NBA franchises draft performance.

Also DiPoto took over at the end of 2015. So...
-
well...they do let anyone from iowa state do whatever they want.

Im still for taking one of the high school shortstops first and foremost. I've read that people aren't that high on the class, but I at least like the player types available at the top. Lots of MI, athletic CF, top college bat. Not that sad that college pitching isn't that strong at 3.
-
Nobody said they were the most talented team in the nba, they just actually know what they are talking about.

Tom Verducci let scott boras do a tick-tock article of the bryce free agency for him. https://www.si.com/mlb/2019/03/01/bryce-harper-philadelphia-phillies-contract-scott-boras I'll let you do a control-f for the white sox.

There is no hope for the Chicago White Sox (the thread?)

Right, there's still enough talent. But it requires a lot of good fortune. There is not a "critical mass". -

FYI I removed some posts that were too political and not really necessary to the topic at hand. -

I did a 2020 big board. It's not that dire, there is easily a way out. But you need the front office to execute on some things really well, and thats why it sucks for them to show off how they aren't great at executing things. -
My main issue is even if fournette does that you are already paying him at that level.

Anyway point is while I wouldn't want Dick Williams or Dayton Moore running the white sox, I have to agree with balta that Rick Hahn is the worst GM in the league at this point. Some bad ones got fired recently, nobody has been operating as long with as little accomplished. DiPoto had similar constraints as when hahn took over and still created an 89 win team with paperclip trading. And DiPoto is not good.

I've thought about this a lot. Here is my analysis: - Paxson and Gar have to be held to a higher standard because they took over one of the best sports brands in the world, have a loyal and adoring fan base, and a big market which makes it a lot easier to compete for talent in FA. - Because of their inherent advantages, I rate them in the bottom half of front offices due to the: - Lack of creativity - are never in play for big acquisitions because they both fall in love with their assets and are too timid to send out what it takes - Refusal to spend/go for it, by the time they dipped into the luxury tax, it was the end of their core, and they used it for an end of career pau gasol. THey have one of the smallest front offices in the league, and consistently leave cap open but have same issue as hahn where they overpay on the end of the roster and restrict bigger moves. - Antagonistic relationships with players and coaches - between the medical mismanagement, throwing coaches under the bus, and physical altercations, they've gotten away with things nobody should HOWEVER - The absolute strength of garpax is good drafting, and if I had to choose between the two I'd take that strength over the lack of any strength on the KW/Hahn side. KENHAN: - For Kenny Williams first decade, he oversaw one of the better pro scouting departments in the game in my opinion. That ended as the age curve progressed and cheap veterans via trade and free agency became terrible investments. - Clearly the best way to succeed in baseball is draft/player dev/international scouting. They have been in the bottom 5 in baseball over last 20 years (generously). - They run their team as if they are setting up to be the illitch tigers, when they should be running it as the cleveland baseball team, rays, or modern twins. Meaning, they operate as if they believe their financial advantages define their team building, but are unrealistic about what it means (constant disadvantage to actual big market teams), while neglecting the ways that small market teams have succeeded. The last point is inexcusable. The thing to emphasize is they are both bad. But despite the "rebuild on the fly" failure of 2014-15-16 of hahn, he said when he took over sox were going to start building up farm. The CBA changed to the white sox favor there. The draft position was more favorable. International free agency became more favorable to white sox. Everything bent toward making it easier for him to operate under Reinsdorf constraints yet still only improved marginally. Nobody is reading at this point anyway. Hi! if you made it this far.

there's been plenty of circus here too.

Would you rather have a running back with 8 million of dead cap space and a 6 million dollar cap hit in 2018 and 2019 for 2 years and whose best year had a per carry average only .2 yards better than howard's worst year and whose worst year was injury-riddled and a 3.3 yards per carry... Or a running back with a 2 million dollar cap hit this year, whose best year averaged 5.2 yards per carry. Leonard Fournette is a slightly better Trent Richardson, with the same issue that you are paying him to be a super star running back but getting nothing better than you'd find in the 5th round. Bears have a fifth round pick this year, I guarantee they can find equal production.

fournette is way more expensive than howard and not very good.
