My guess would be that the college relievers could be successful but may be the more highly volatile, up and down relievers as they have less experience changing things up as hitters see them more. Converted starters are more consistent because they have worked through trying to make their stuff play up when tired, when going through a 2nd/3rd time through, etc. Just a hunch, but it makes sense to me.

This isn't really a question. That is the gamble. The sox have invested a bunch into college relievers and presumably because they expect a return. Perhaps they are expecting the high leverage relievers to be the converted starters and just have these be the depth so you don't need to pay for a MR on the market or during season, but this is the play.

Yeah, I think Bears need to fold. While I understand the argument they shouldn't have to pay for production they didn't get, the league has increased suspensions for more and more on-field play, which is increasing potential for players to miss guarantees due to decreased playing time. The teams get to vote on those rules, the players do not. The team should take the risk, not the player, especially on the defaulted slotted contracts. If a guy has a history of it? By all means try to add it into a FA contract, but this is silly.

There is no reason to promote a HS in their first season. This is the most ball they’ve ever played. This year is just to get them acclimated.

Sox fans aren’t good at this stuff because they compare our system to what it used to be vs comparing it truly to all other franchises. I don’t think anyone has the time for that but after the year of injuries I’d probably take Yankees or brave for under 25 talent.

I have been interested in seeing it workout. If the zig where others zag stuff where you could see an advantage for the Sox, building an organic costcontrolled bullpen could allow more leeway to go after position and SP upgrades. that said, the huge weakness I see in it is the raiding of the group in rule 5. Are eel going to lose interesting starters or position players because we have to protect a huge number of prospect relievers?

So I have thoughts on this but will try to be short: - our small class this year I think is an example of our limitations STILL in latam market. Those guys (300k and below) can go anywhere and so relationships matter, we still are rebuilding so many relationships and creating new ones. When money isn’t a factor it makes it hard. Compare that with Preller who has lived in LatAm for years. - because of that limitation, Sox probably rightfully have instead opted for using the money toward trades for spects. So it’s a good news/bad news thing for me. Sox are pursuing probably their best strategy available but I think it’s still an example of how the org is trying to dig itself out of the wilder crater.

Yeah this guy should be in majors this year. It’s not like we won’t have a difficult rule 5 decision too. If he looks bad, easier to pass him through, if he looks great, protect him.

You are missing quite a bit of action that happened on the 2016-17 offseason, where they went from 2nd highest in Ks to lowest when you are looking at just today’s teams lens. they also signed Beltran to platoon with Gattis, they signed reddick to replace Carlos Gomez, then McCann to Castro move. Those all replaced players with decent to good production but with high Ks to move toward players that were expected to provide decent to good production but with less ks. in some cases it didn’t work out (Beltran), but where they could replace their high k players with similar value they did.

You get the best talent you can get. High k players aren’t necessarily bad, they can still be very valuable. Top offenses appear to be veering away from lineups dominated by high k players. But obviously, extraordinary power could still overcome that weakness (see NYY). But, regardless, there was a noticeable trend from the Sox front office in ‘17 onward toward players with much better k:bb rates. The 17 class was basically a bunch of college hitters with low ks, good BB rates, and moderate to plus power (though also a very unathletic class)

I think it’s interesting that both the Astros and now the brewers found initial success with high k, high power lineups, then evolved to greater offense as they looked to replace the higher k players out of their lineup, even if those players were fine obp-wise. “Ks are just another out” is clearly becoming outdated with smart franchises. As our future team comes into play and we look to trade out assets for upgrades, it feels like our low-k prospects would be the ones to bank on staying, the high k guys such as Collins could be the ones used to get us upgrades.
