Kick Me In The Shingo!
Did I miss something? Where does it see that he will automatically be given the closer's role? I don't think you sign a 35-yr old pitcher for $1 million and expect him to immediately become the closer. My guess is he will have to earn it or be a setup guy.

Interesting Rumor
I can't see the Sox taking on this kind of contract (Burrell).... 2003: $1.0M (+$1.5M signing bonus) 2004: $4.0M 2005: $7.0M 2006: $9.5M 2007: $13.0M 2008: $14.0M I think I would rather just keep Jose and Maggs and risk losing them next year and spending the freed up cash on other players.

ISA agreement with the Sox..
Ncorgbl, do you know if the Sox pay for the cost of running USCF? I am not taking about capital expenditures, but more routine items such as the power, water, gas, basic maintenance, light bulbs, air filters, plumbing repairs, etc....... There are a million different things that can come up, and I don't want to know them all, just a general idea. What about cleaning of the stadium? I would assume that the Sox are responsible for all cleaning, trash removal, pressure washing, etc., but am not sure. Any info on that kind of stuff?

Talking Baseball on ESPN 1000 am right now:
Steff, you should be careful about keeping your feelings about Ozzie bottled up like that? I know you are hinting at something here, but why don't you just tell us how you really feel? Keeping things inside isn't healthy. ;-)

Reed played for Team USA that attempted to qualify for the Olympics. Team USA before their qualifying tournament, played in the Arizona Fall League to prepare. So he was indeed playing in the AFL.

Why would anybody buy tickets?
In 7 seasons as a full time player he was good in three of them. In 4 of those seasons, he was downright average. Year - Avg HR RBI 1997 - .248 14 57 1998 - .296 15 76 2001 - .257 14 58 2002 - .267 16 62 He had good years in 1999, 2000 and 2003. Previous to that, he played 101 games in 1996, but only got 192 AB's and was awful. In 1995, he played in 79 games and hit .260 12 and 54, which flashed his potential. So at best you can say Carl is good 50% of his years and that is quite generous. He certainly isn't worth the $9 million he made last year. And if he reverts back to a year like those above, he isn't worth half the difference between what he and Rowand will make this year.

Why would anybody buy tickets?
Everett was good last year, I never said anything different.... But he is a vastly overrated player based on the numbers he has put up. He has had three good seasons out of 8 or 9 full seasons. The three were very good. The others were quite average. The numbers speak for themselves.

Get to typing!! ;-)

Why would anybody buy tickets?
Everett's career averages are approx. .265 17 HR and 68 RBI. He has to mix in a good year every once in a while to get his averages to that point. Here's betting that Rowand will match or nearly match Everett's production this year.

Spring Training Invitees
I agree that Estes would be a bad choice.

How great would Pujols look in a Sox uni...
That's the key. If he wants a long term deal, he needs to take less money. There is NO benefit to the team to sign him long term and give him guaranteed money he would get if he went year-to-year. Teams that give a player too much guaranteed money in that situation often end up regretting it. Players get hurt. Players performance drops off. There are too many situations where bad things can happen. Too many teams have fallen into the trap of giving a guy a long term deal without realizing any savings in trade for that guaranteed money.

2004 Winter League Analysis
Don't know any details at this point or even if it is completely true.... Jason, I don't see Castillo as a scout. All pitchers chart between starts and video tape hitters. Every game, there are three starters in street clothes charting and/or shooting video. The Sox found Tetsu Yofu because they saw him working out with Castillo as Carlos was trying to get in throwing shape to make a comeback. It wasn't really a recommendation.

2004 Winter League Analysis
Why do Maggs 9 AB's not matter, yet Pacheco's 5 IP are rated a disappointment? And do Jose's 52 AB's make that much more of a difference? Those are awfully small sample sizes.....

2004 Winter League Analysis
Jason, where did you get info that he could be a scout?? Also, if healthy, Castillo will be in Charlotte, not Birmimgham. I have heard a rumbling that he is hurt again, although I am not sure to what degree. Why would we have a 3rd catcher? If one of them is not released, look for both back in Charlotte.

Exactly! I can think of a lot of fantasies that are much, much more fun. I'd share them but I don't think they would be appropriate for this forum.

About Trump...
That post reminds me of all the stupid email virus warning hoaxes spread over the internet daily. You know, the one were AOL and IBM announced yesterday this huge virus being spread around and no one should forward it. But then again, they should forward it to everyone they know because Bill Gates is going to give everyone who forwards this email $100 because he is testing a beta email tracking program.

About Trump...
Go read the rest of that thread......... The thread is called "Reinsdorf Has the Money". I personally tore that guys whole premise to pieces. It is crap and totally baseless. I'd be happy to explain to all of you that don't believe once again, why NO ONE knows how much the Sox make, if anything. There is no way we can even make a decent educated guess. If you want me to post my arguments, just say the word. You can read it on WSI, however.

Don't expect Thomas at Soxfest
Still sounds like a fun trip. Bourbon Street is a very, very bad place. Good thing you don't drink anymore. I was just down there for 4 days in December and didn't get back to my hotel earlier than 3 am any of the nights, and one night it was 5:30 am! Wish I would have known you were going, I could suggested a few places to check out.

Jeremy Reed our starting CF in April?
The one position player they did rush is Aaron Rowand. He was brought up and used as a 4th OF when he should have been playing every day in AAA. When Rowand and Crede were in Birmingham, their coaches felt Rowand had as good of a chance to be a good player in the Majors as Crede. They felt he had more power potential than Crede. The Sox took their time with Crede, yet Rowand didn't get the opportunity to develop the same way.
