  1. Make no mistake, I don't think anyone should have anything confiscated. If most houses were heated using oil, then I think there should be efficiency regulations in place for furnaces. However, I think most houses are heated with either natural gas(a much cleaner, more plentiful resource, I believe) or electricity(infinte resources, no emissions). The decisions should rest with the individual, and I think individuals should just use a little more discretion when it comes to exercising their freedoms. Having freedom doesn't mean you get to be devoid of any responsibility. Having said that, I don't think it would be all that big of an imposition to require that automakers make vehicles that get at least 20 mpg(or whatever). It wouldn't affect you the buyer(it would save you some money), it would affect corporations that should be required to be more environmentally friendly than they currently are anyways. Might reduce their profit by a few millions--cry me a river. I think this debate will be moot in a few years, as electric and hybrid cars are becoming more feasible every day. The technology is already there, but the lobbyists and special interest groups are holding things up until the oil companies have a chance to reposition themselves, and get footholds in other markets. I don't think it was coincidence, for example, that the tobacco companies didn't start to really get nailed until after Philip Morris had already acquired enough food companies to become one of the biggest conglomerates in the industry. No, no hostility taken, nor emitted on my part. Just having a debate. Isn't that what the topic headline asked in the first place?
  2. I hope they assign her casket an All-Jewish pallbearing team.
  3. Older cars would absolutely get grandfathered in, much like the way pre-1970 cars don't have to get catalytic converters.
  4. No one mentioned anything about emissions, but I guess it's fair to assume that a car that got better MPG would spew out fewer emissions as well. That being said, "passing emissions" does NOT mean your car doesn't have an effect on the environment. I'm not saying people should ditch motor vehicles until solar/electric cars are more practical, but I think people should be a little more world health-conscious when it comes time to buy a car. 95% of people who have SUV's don't need them, and while they are free to drive whatever they want, I think it shows a blatant lack of concern for the environment, which is scary. You think you should have the freedom to drive whatever car you want, eh? You are aware that oil is a FINITE resource, aren't you? What will your car run on, once the earth's oil reserves are dried up? Or are you simply concerned with your own wants/needs, and have no regard for future generations?
  5. You can't park on a side street anywhere near USCF without a permit card, which you can only get if you live there, or if you know someone that does.
  6. I would take the "Pro" position on requiring autos to get more mpg.
  7. OK, I know I'm the king of posting "re-run" topics, so if these are nothing new, please delete them: Scouts say that making Shingo a closer would be a huge mistake, that he's best suited as a long man. A guy from Baseball America basically says Jeremy Reed is overrated, and that the pro player he most reminds him of is Mark Kotsay.
  8. I'm getting a living will done, as is my girlfriend. Since we don't plan on getting married, anything we have defaults to our parents if one of us ever died, with the exception of our house and our cars. 401k stuff, bank accounts, possessions, etc. all have to be written in there to make sure we cover for each other in case of death. Also, death service arrangements, organ donor stuff, et al is also being put in there. The last thing I would want if I died would be my stupid mother insisting on a catholic wake and burial. Like I want my rotting ass sitting in a hole, wasting land.

Wait, you think it's sad that people such as myself, who don't believe in anything "Jesus," would come away from this movie with nothing? Well, in our opinion, there's nothing to take from it, because it's a FICTIONAL re-telling of a FICTIONAL story. I think it's sad that one can't rise above their own fear of what is unknown, so they stubbornly adhere to a multi-thousand year old book, 1% of which is corroborated by other sources-- a book in which the events of its focal point aren't even kept consistent. I also think it's sad that said people really believe that we humans, who occupy about one one hundred-trillionth of the KNOWN universe are really that important to the creator of aforementioned universe. See, we atheists can be just as arrogant and condescending as christians.
  10. I don't think so--those who are guilty of those crimes are exactly as I described them, IMO.
  11. It looks like I got it, if I choose to take it. I'm still checking out a few things though. I don't hate where I'm at now, and that makes the decision even tougher.
  12. Vince, My over-general rant notwithstanding, I am aware there are many men of god who have no interest in assaulting young boys, and who have deep conviction and respect for the laws of the path they've chosen. I'm sure you are one of them, and I have no interest in seeing things you and others base your whole lives on destroyed. However, the catholic church is getting off wayyyyy too easy here, and an example must be made of those who abuse the trust and loyalty lent to them. Open ALL the records, go above and beyond any court-mandated retributions, reach out to those who have been hurt, and even those who may only think they were harmed. As someone who grew up going to catholic schools, I can say I've been given harsher penance for lying to my mother. Hypocrites, the lot of them.
  13. How'd your interview go yesterday? You movin' on up, to the east side? To a deluxe apartment in the sky?
  14. The REALLY sad part is, if this same percentage of worthless scum was found in any other tax-exempt organization, that organization would no doubt have its exempt status stripped, and may not be allowed to exist at all. And, if the heads of other charitable groups were found to be guilty of covering up such crimes, you could be sure there would be a MASSIVE housecleaning. Priests = enlightened messengers of god? The light that guides mankind to the path of salvation? Educators, counselors, examples of proper christian life? Bah, just a bunch of pederasts in robes that found a sweet way to get access to all kinds of young boy ass, without needing to work for a living to boot.
  15. 1) I believe Mike Sciocia and Bob Brenly would tell you that having experience is overrated 2) Aren't ALL relievers question marks? Outside of a handful of studs, don't all relievers fluctuate quite a bit from year-to-year? And, I think Japanese pitchers have a better track record than position players. 3) Rookie pitchers make questionable teams contenders every year. This year, why not the SOX? 4) Wasn't Bonds older than both when he hit 73 HR's? 5) Please, you'd have to go back to George H.W. Bush's reign to find the last time Flash put back-t0-back good seasons. 6) What is it about any team in the Central that scares you? Juan Gone is fragile, and a Me-first player that won't fit in KC's clubhouse, Beltran will be traded if they're not in contention come July, their bullpen is REAL old and their rotation has more holes in it than an Iraqi military base. Minnesota has just as many problems. Have faith, brutha man.

Yes, "Pearl Harbor" should be the standard of cinematic brilliance that all other films should strive to measure up to! Badlands was good, I guess I really don't hate TM, it was just that people made such a big deal about his return to filmmaking, and were saying how great TTRL was just because that was the cool thing to say. IMHO, once the "battle" scenes were done, this was how the itinerary read for the rest of the movie: Attach camera to homemade raft. Send raft down exotic river Read poetry and diary entries, to be heard as raft floats down river with camera Repeat for 16 hours Put gun in mouth, pull trigger.
  18. This problem should rank somewhere around 2,987 on the list of problems our government needs to address--right in front of whether gays should be allowed to marry. The FCC accepts thousands of dollars a year from radio companies in the form of essentially paid vacations, and yet the FCC is supposed to be an objective regulatory agency? And Republicans say they're for LESS government interference. I'm about ready to join an anarchy cult.
  19. As Derrick Coleman so eloquently put it: "Whoopde-damn-doo"
  20. I think I could telecommute if I take the job, so yes! Advertising Sales, as an occupation, is much more enticing if you are allowed to do it in your bathrobe!

You liked that movie? I needed to pinch myself every 5 minutes to keep from falling asleep. Terrence Malick, wish you'd go away again....
  22. Hey, I am also going on an interview after work today. I'll cross mine if you cross yours...
  23. Gay Moronotti? Sometimes, it's REAL easy to tell the age of a poster......
  24. You know in the movie "Trading Places" when Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd are executing their stock swindle near the end, and that guy from the Dept. of Agriculture comes on the monitor, and every person in the exchange stops and listens for what he has to say about the orange crop? That is what seeing this story reminded me of. Every Sox fan has been waiting to see what state Frank would be in, and when he would actually show up, so when the report came out, we all made like 1980's stockbrokers waiting for the orange crop report.
  25. If you're converting fat into muscle, or simply building more muscle through exercising/diet, you'll probably gain weight, rather than lose it. Muscle is much heavier than fat.
