**Skepticism Warning** Please, what a waste of time and money. There was no stinkin boat built that held two of every species on Earth, and there was no world-wide flood for which it was allegedly built. Will they be digging for Adam and Eve's bones next? Not like it will matter--the people pushing for this won't ever admit that it isn't the ark anyways, much like how they can't let go of the shroud of Turin. Just my $.02

We are right where I thought we'd be

Yes, yes I do. If the Sox make the playoffs, chances are excellent that our best hitter will be either Kelly Dransfeldt, or Willie Harris. I will now set myself on fire.(line stolen from Bill Simmons) -

I agree, things look pretty good thus far for the south siders. Given that I didn't think we'd manhandle KC the way we did, I'd say were even a little better off than I thought we'd be at this point. However, here's a couple things that concern me(realizing, again, that it's only 20 games into the season): 1) Buehrle is seemingly very hittable. He's not walking people much, and he had a bunch of k's yesterday, but he got hit--hard. Wouldn't think it's a control thing, based on his good walk numbers, but maybe it is. I'm not panicing--he's been far from terrible--just concerned. 2) Is anyone on this team happy with base hits? It seems like(just like last year) when the offense starts to go into a little rut, everyone is swinging for the fences--often at pitches they should be swinging at at all. Did the Sox have more than 2 ground outs yesterday? Couldn't Carlos Lee shorten his swing just a bit for christsakes? 3) Crede. Uppercut swing. Bad. Needs fixin'. -
I think sending a 30-100 guy AND a very good lefty reliever for Rob-f***ing Mackowiak is utterly insane. The Soriano deal is nice, but The last thing Texas needs is a slugging outfielder. They would want starting pitching, and a whole bunch of it.

To be fair though, Olde English isn't technically beer, neither is Colt 45. They are Malt Liquor beverages--not that I have any idea what the difference is...

Reply 2 Why can't we keep Mags, pay roll

I was expecting something more entertaining than that, Russkie! Throw your two cents in, you know you wanna.......... -
Actually, out of the "mass produced" beer brewed in this country, Budweiser is the only one that can claim it doesn't add any chemicals or other foreign substances in its products. Miller, Coors et al refuse to reveal their full lists of ingredients, but you can do simple tests to show that Miller has chemicals in it.

Reply 2 Why can't we keep Mags, pay roll
Wong & Owens replied to popeye089's topic in Pale Hose Talk
My reply YES I SAID ANY MORE YES they did great in the eighties but you only mentioned three competitive seasons in the past FOURTEEN yeas --NO, I DIDN'T. THE SOX FINISHED IN 1ST OR 2ND IN THEIR DIVISION 11 TIMES SINCE 1990. IF YOU DON'T CONSIDER THAT COMPETITIVE, THEN YOU SHOULD RE-EXAMINE WHAT THE WORD MEANS. "We, meaning Chicago, is third largest metropolitan sports venue in the country. Why can't we keep our players? --SIMPLE, BECAUSE THE STADIUM IS FILLED TO THE TUNE OF BEING THE 25TH LARGEST MARKET. AND SPECTATING AT SPORTING EVENTS IS NOT ABOUT SPORTS ALONE ANYMORE. THE SOX HAVE FEW NEIGHBORHOOD DRAWS, AND A LESS-THAN-POPULAR IMAGE. "Mags puts MAnny Ramirez numbers CONSISTENLY." --MAGS CAREER AVGS: 29 HR'S, 109 RBI'S .307 AVG, .365 OBP, .528 SLG MANNY AVG'S: 36 HR'S, 119 RBI'S .318 AVG, .413 OBP, .598 SLG FIRST OFF, MANNY MAKES $20 MILLION, AND NOBODY IS WORTH THAT KIND OF DOUGH. NOT AROD, NOT BONDS, AND CERTAINLY NOT MAGGLIO ORDONEZ. SECONDLY, MAGS DOESN'T EVEN PUT UP MANNY NUMBERS, SO ARGUING THAT HE SHOULD BE PAID AS SUCH IS FOOLISH. "MY REPLY, SCREW ARBITRATION WE ARE THE 3rd LARGEST MARKET WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO AFFORD ANYONE WE WANT " --THIS IS A BRILLIANT STATEMENT, SUBMIT YOUR NAME AT ONCE FOR CONSIDERATION AS THE NEXT COMMISSIONER OF BASEBALL. "We have the bats but we need morePitching [/b]" --NO ARGUMENTS HERE. AND IF THE SOX ARE IN CONTENTION, KW WILL GO GET SOME HELP. "Legions of fans were crerated by Sammy Sosa in his home run chase" --WRIGLEY FIELD WAS BEING SOLD OUT YEARS BEFORE SOSANUTS EVER JUMPED ABOARD THE 60-HR JUICEWAGON. ONE PLAYER IN ONE SEASON DOES NOT FILL A STADIUM FOR YEARS THEREAFTER. YOUR LOGIC IS BASELESS. "no one like a loser unless some was there to grasp and they grasped Sosa, the ivey, the lovelable loser image, the curse, and most of all THE CLASSIC WRIGLEY FIELD." --I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS COMMENT MEANS. COULD YOU CLARIFY THIS, POR FAVOR? "All TEAMS RECEIVED $50 million AT THE START OF THE YEAR --YES. SO WHAT'S YOUR POINT? -
I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago, my dad was a Sox fan, and he would take my brothers and I to a few games every summer. That's pretty much it.

I dunno, this story just seems to fit under this thread as well: Teacher Quits After Girl Thrown Out Window E-mail this story Printer-friendly format Search archives By Associated Press Published April 23, 2004, 7:12 AM CDT COVINGTON, Ga. -- A teacher at a Newton County school has resigned after officials say she admitted she told two students to throw a 14-year-old girl from a classroom window. The teacher, a 63-year-old Conyers resident, was not immediately arrested after the Monday incident, which took place at Sharp Learning Center. But the Newton County Sheriff's Office is investigating. The student, whose name was not released, was taken to Newton General Hospital on Tuesday night for neck pains and cuts to her body, said Newton County Sheriff's Office investigator Marty Roberts. According to an incident report by resource officer Brian Chiappetta, the incident took place in the morning during second period. The students were in class when the teacher took a photograph of some of the students, the report said. When the girl asked why the teacher had taken her picture, the teacher allegedly responded with a disparaging remark about the girl's appearance. The girl became upset and began to use profanity and hit the office assist button on the classroom wall, the incident report said. The teacher then allegedly told two 14-year-old boys to pick up the girl and throw her out the window. The two boys later told principal Kenneth Daniels that they threw the girl out the window because they did not want to be written up for disobeying a teacher. The teacher resigned Wednesday, Roberts said. Roberts said he has been told that the school board will leave it up to the girl's parents to pursue criminal charges against the teacher. But he said his investigation is ongoing. "I've had incidents involving schools, but I've never heard of such a thing where the teacher instructs students like this," Roberts said.

If I were Catholic, I'd nominate Vince for pope. I'm serious, he's the only Christian I know with his head on straight

You know, it seemed like the Sox did everything they could to hold Crede back for as long as humanly possible, even when they really had no other alternative at 3rd, on teams that they had to know weren't seriously going to contend. Maybe they saw something in Crede that made them think he didn't quite have it ?

Hey!! That's my line! Ok, you added the part about the country club, but dammit, WHERE'S MY PROPS?!

"The Cubs and Sox rarley compete anymore" --INACCURATE. THE SOX ALMOST MADE THE PLAYOOFS LAST YEAR, WON THE CENTRAL IN 2000, WOULD HAVE WON IN 1994, WON THE CENTRAL IN 93, AND FINISHED SECOND ALMOST EVERY YEAR TO THE A'S JUGGERNAUT IN THE LATE 80'S, EARLY 90'S. THE CUBS WERE A PLAYOFF TEAM LAST YEAR, ALMOST WENT IN 2001 OR 02, WERE THE WILD CARD IN 1998, WENT TO THE PLAYOFFS IN 1989, AND 1984. DYNASTIES THEY'RE NOT, BUT TO SAY THEY HARDLY COMPETE? RIDICULOUS. At least the Cubs try and have an $80 mil payroll. --SURE, IN THE LAST TWO YEARS THEY HAVE. BUT HOW MANY YEARS PRIOR TO THAT WAS WRIGLEY FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH LEMMINGS PAYING $5 A BEER TO WATCH A LOWER-MIDDLE OF THE PACK PAYROLL? David Wells, Carl Everett, Alomar, Foulke, etc. --WITH THE EXCEPTION OF FOULKE, (AND EVERETT, WHO FOR THE 900TH f***ING TIME COULD NOT HAVE BEEN RESIGNED REALISTICALLY BECAUSE OF ARBITRATION) THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO RESIGN THE PLAYERS YOU HAVE MENTIONED. DAVID WELLS ONLY SHOWS UP TO PLAY WHEN HE IS ON THE YANKEES, AND ALOMAR IS TEN TIMES WORSE RIGHT NOW THAN EITHER HARRIS OR URIBE(OR D'ANGELO JIMENEZ). CAN'T ARGUE THAT MORE MOVES SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE TO MAKE GOOD TEAMS BETTER, BUT THROWING MONEY AWAY JUST TO PUT UP THE FACADE OF "WE'RE TRYING" IS JUST STUPID. People originally went to Wrigley because of the scenery and now theyexpect to see good baseball because of additions made --INCORRECT. FANS WENT TO WRIGLEY BECAUSE THE CUBS WERE BROADCAST ON THE NATION'S MOST POWERFUL RADIO STATION, WHICH OWNED ONE OF THE NATION'S LARGEST NEWSPAPERS, AND THE NATION'S FIRST TRULY NATIONWIDE TELEVISION STATION(AND I WILL CEASE USING THE WORD 'NATION' NOW). THIS EXPOSURE CREATED LEGIONS OF FANS THAT NOW TEAM IN BASEBALL, SANS MAYBE THE YANKEES OR DODGERS CAN MATCH. AS THE CUBS PLODDED THROUGH THE GARBAGE YEARS DURING MOST OF THE 80'S AND 90'S, WRIGLEY WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ANYWHERE NEAR AS FILLED IF IT WEREN'T STATIONED SMACK IN THE MIDDLE OF AN UPPER-CLASS NEIGHBORHOOD WITH A HUGE POPULATION DENSITY COMPRISED OF UPPER 20, LOWER 30-SOMETHINGS WITH NO SPOUSE/KIDS AND LOTS OF DISPOSABLE INCOME. Steinbrener turned his wallet upside in mid 90's and now the Yanks are "America's Team" --STEINBRENNER DIDN'T EXACTLY "TURN HIS WALLET UPSIDE-DOWN." HE SIGNED THAT HUGE DEAL WITH THE CABLE COMPANY, AND THAT GAVE HIM A HUGE NEW REVENUE STREAM TO WORK WITH. EVERYONE BUT YANKEE FANS HATES THE YANKEES, CALLING THEM "AMERICA'S TEAM" IS A STRETCH AT BEST, LUDICROUS AT WORST.

Secret message makes it into new park

I lost whatever respect I had for PETA when they protested the logo of the Dreamworks Studio(Spielberg and Geffen's film company). Their logo is a crescent moon, with a young boy sitting on the lower half, holding a fishing pole. PETA denounced the logo as promoting a violent and insensitive recreational pasttime--fishing. If you have this much f***ing time on your hands, get another goddamned hobby. -
So many questions that need answering here: Will the serivces be drive-thru? Will his tombstone read, "Billions and billions earned"? Will the coffin be shaped like a happy meal box? Who gives the eulogy, Hamburglar or Grimace? Will his ashes be added to the Big Mac "Special Sauce?"

I think the main issue here pertains to how much money JR & Co. are willing to commit to the team's payroll. Is Mags worth 13-14 million? Not if the team insists on keeping payroll around $60 mil. And even if the payroll is increased, you can get a better defensive player with good offensive numbers for a third of what Mags will cost. If JR is willing to spend $75-$80 million, then you can give Mags enough to keep him. Otherwise, signing Mags pretty much guarantees mediocre(or fluky teams chock full of rookies) teams for 5-6 years.

I think it's overrated. Excruciatingly boring.

And as of today, he still has 2 HR's, and 7 RBI's total. He's batting .214, with a .267 OBP. Oh, and he's struck out 6 times in 28 at-bats. I'd rather have Darius Miles playing for the Sox.
