  1. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 03:02 PM) What's the scouting report on Borbon? i dont know any reports, but from what ive seen of him....about 12 games.... probably one of the fastest players in the draft, but big for a slap hitter...could develop some power...left handed hitter, potential to leadoff in the bigs, didnt like what i saw of him on D...misplayed at least 3 or 4 balls in the games i saw...basically speed is his best tool, but he can hit for a good average...but if he gets injured and loses a step...forget about it
  2. i hope KW certainly watches SF pick 3 times and realizes that simply by letting go of buerhle we will get a 1st rounder and a sandwich pick....which might yield better prospects than by trading him.....that is if we dont resign him
  3. QUOTE(beautox @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 02:58 PM) i could see him going to the tigers good god that would be two years in a row a great pitcher falls in their lap because of signability concerns
  4. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 02:36 PM) My top 5, in order-Porcello, Main, Savery, Harvey, Borbon. id rather see bourbons teammate arencibia than him
  5. can't help but feel that if the shoes were reversed and someone said it about african americans that this thing would be everywhere and jesse jackson would have already had like 4 heart attacks....but basically this story has gone largely unnoticed
  6. QUOTE(beautox @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 02:30 PM) Sickels can you post that one more time....i didnt get it hte first four
  7. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 02:02 PM) Nick Schmidt reminds me of the type of guy we usually pick. agreed 100%....although even though he is a more "polished" pitcher, i like the fact that he throws a + changeup already....i dunno maybe its just the white sox, but every time we face a lefty with a good change we never hit it
  8. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 01:59 PM) so your Commodores will have three top 10 picks in the two years? Alvarez is the clear #1 for next year right? hes the early favorite, but that type of thing changes so fast and he could drop if he signs boras, it all depends....but he and smoak from south car. seem like the 1 and 2 college players right now....whats unbelievable about him is his batting eye so early in his college career
  9. even i am surprised with weathers....theres no doubt in my mind hes got the stuff to close in the bigs...but 8 is pretty high for a closer
  10. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 01:54 PM) He's good, damn good, so a number two starter certainly isn't a knock. But I don't think with two pitches and the possibility of a third one, you can be an ace. Aces for me have four pitches they can throw for strikes, while Price has only two right now and his change-up is coming along. thats a good point, hes been able to dominate at college with basically only two pitches....his change he just shows to hitters maybe twice a game, and ditto a slow curve...so i can see how that wouldnt translate necessarily that well to the pros....youre right though...even a #2 starter has a few all star seasons usually int he bigs, and id say thats about right for price....beyond being just african american i really think he compares similarly with dontrelle, without the funky motion, but a better slider
  11. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 01:17 PM) David Price is nothing more than a #2 starter. Not a lot of risk in the pick, but there are about four or five pitchers with higher upside. with 194 Ks in 133 innings this year alone, ill disagree, but im also biased
  12. tampa bay is getting a great player today....vandy coach tim corbin, who has coached at clemson in the past, said he can't imagine having a player like david price ever again. he doesnt know how he landed him in the first place...the guy has everything, stuff, makeup, competetiveness...he is going to be a stud. 94-95 consistently with the fastball from the left side, 86 with the slider...both pitches he can spot in any count...solid curve thrown a bit slower, and a change he just uses to show hitters....not to mention the first teammate out of the dugout to congratulate a guy who lays down a bunt, hits a HR, etc...and an incredible work ethic and desire....ive seen him get so upset after losing in madden for PS2 that he played it for like a week straight just to get better to beat the guy. its simply a rare combination of talent and makeup that you just dont see everyday...
  13. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Jun 7, 2007 -> 07:22 AM) http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines Note to KW, This season is OVAH, for all intents and purposes, without Joe Crede. That means that the short-sighted drafting of another college reliever (see Ring, Royce or even Fogg, Josh) would be idiotic. We need catchers, middle infielders and outfielders more than anything. There are a few that should be available when the Sox pick. I don't want to see KW's quote in the paper tomorrow, "We felt this was our best chance to compete this year. We don't believe in rebuilding here, we're reloading, and the price other clubs were asking for quality relief pitching was not commensurate with what I wanted to give up in return from our system. Usually we take the "best player available," but we feel Mr. Weathers is "big league ready" and can contribute to our bullpen immediately. In fact, I was speaking to Ozzie last week and he said, "Get me some right-handed relievers that can throw strikes." Well, Ozzie, here you go. And no, I don't see any commonality between this pick and Royce Ring, there's nothing wrong with taking a reliever in the 1st round even though we desperately need position prospects to replenish our lower minors." i saw casey for two years at vandy...dude throws chedd... 75Ks in 49 IP is pretty nuts....weathers is consistently 96 with his fastball and can run it up to 99....threw a few sliders at the regional clocked at 91 (my friend works the mph gun)...that said the fact that the sox only have 1 pick in the top few roudns i dont think they'll use it on a reliever, though i did see in baseball america they said hed be better than former college closer chad cordero and as good, but a different type of pitcher than houston street
  14. QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ Jun 3, 2007 -> 05:27 PM) Nah, I said Black Saturday because five of the eight national seeds lost, including Vandy. This is FSU baseball I guess. We suck in the postseason. we lost another tough one to michigan....we just burned through too many pitchers this weekend.....price looked dominant in his 1st inning tonight after his 129 pitch outing on friday...but he just didnt have his best fastball and the michigan kid laid into a 3-1 heater.....i gotta give those guys credit, they were one of the best hitting teams i saw all year...every guy had a great approach and they hit the bal the other way with authority better than anyone ive seen this year......just an incredible game either way....alvarez got robbed of a game tying homer in the bot. of 10th...tough loss but mich played well and they got just enough pitching to edge us 4-3 twice this weekend
  15. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 2, 2007 -> 03:38 PM) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUcFWPgB8oY Not sure if it was posted, but the stealth crawl and grenade throw along with throwing the ump out made me laugh... thats so forced, just the mere fact that he took applause at the end bothers me...it was entirely for show, i mean once he got ejected why not become the next idiot manager to get on tv...the best ones are the ones that are spontaneous and are really done out of pure frustration
  16. 18. Casey Weathers, rhp, Vanderbilt (20) Up Weathers continues to blow away the competition and was going strong as the Commodores stormed into the NCAA tournament as the No. 1 national seed. "He's been one of the most consistent guys the entire season," an AL scouting director said. "If you want him, you're going to have to step up and grab him, maybe not the first 16 or 18 picks but not long afterward."
  17. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 2, 2007 -> 02:49 PM) Uribe swings at the first pitch down by a bunch of runs. Baseball IQ of 6. you can't take a latin players aggressiveness away from him
  18. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 2, 2007 -> 02:45 PM) Of course...I meant for the 2007 season though. You know, the season KW said he wouldn't forget about when making moves this offseason. Danks and Jenks are the two players I actually enjoy watching these days. the rotation in general has been good to watch also, i mean, if they pitched like they did last year and we struggled to find a 5th starter ala 01-04, can you imagine where we would be right now, with having this horrid bullpen and the worst offense in the league
  19. QUOTE(chisoxfan79 @ Jun 2, 2007 -> 02:32 PM) What game r u watching im outa town, so the only thing i have is the cubs game on WGN and im following our game on the computer
  20. QUOTE(chisoxfan79 @ Jun 2, 2007 -> 02:28 PM) No clue I just flipped over during the break cubs tied it in the 7th, gave a run back to atlanta in the 8th, and then in the bottom of hte eighth pagan doubled, and then was thrown out at 3rd with nobody out trying to get to 3rd on a ball that skipped away from salty....it was a close play, but pinella went nuts, and kicked a whole bunch of dirt on the 3rd base umpire and kicked his hat a few times....it was pretty funny though i woulda laughed harder had we not just given up a 3 spot
  21. QUOTE(fathom @ May 30, 2007 -> 04:16 PM) I'm just so happy they capitalized on "our year". A lot of teams have a magical season, but they can't finish it off. Like you said, we were the best overall team for the majority of the 2005 season. Ever since the ASB last year, we're nowhere near that. i know you are mr. pessimism, but isnt it remarkable that we are only 3 back in losses out of hte W.C.?
  22. QUOTE(fathom @ May 30, 2007 -> 04:06 PM) It's amusing to me that with all of the Twins success under their current regime, we're the one with the World Series crown. I assume you're like me Steff, and you realize just how magical the 2005 season was with every passing day. its funny cuz after 05 i simply had expected this team to play like its the best team in the league. all throughout last year i felt like we were or should have been the best, but as time has gone on i have realized that for that stretch of time (05), we were the best, and those days are gone....if this was 2004, i wouldn't be happy with the way the sox were playing, but i wouldnt be nearly as upset as i am now, as all i hoped for was 86-90 wins...after 05 i expected better, and now like you, im starting to realize that the best i can hope for is to be in that 85+ win category, and anything beyond that is simply something that is only gonna happen in those magical type years, and maybe i should be more content with the fact that at very least we are .500 and still not 100% out of competing for the playoffs
  23. QUOTE(AirScott @ May 30, 2007 -> 03:59 PM) Reyes isn't a gem. He's a Cliff Politte, Matt Karchner, Neal Cotts...a guy who puts together an awesome season and disappears. i agree....but finding him for that one year....wouldnt you call that a gem? id say in 05 we found 3 gems in cotts hermie and politte...at least for that year, the difference is the twins are smart enough to realize it and replace those guys instead of counting on them like we did
  24. QUOTE(fathom @ May 30, 2007 -> 03:58 PM) Neshek isn't a hidden gem...he's been a well-regarded member of their minors for a few years now. I know for a fact that the BA scouts LOVE him. ok, well what i mean is hta BA never had him as a top 10 prospect in the twins organization....and maybe that speaks to the depth of their organization, cuz i cant fathom (no pun intended) a guy outside our top 10 coming even close to putting up the #s neshek does in our pen.... maybe sleeper was a better way of putting it as this is from a BA chat, but nontheless....its not like anyone figured neshek would do what he is doing
  25. QUOTE(joeynach @ May 30, 2007 -> 03:51 PM) What annoys me is that Twins just arent that good. They have no pitchers outside of Santana and Boonser is decent. They have 4 good hitters; Morneau, Hunter, Mauer, Cuddyear and a cast of clown who all struggle to hit .250. i dont get it either.....they develop bullpens out of castaways (gurrier) and find hidden gems (neshek, reyes last year) with more regularity than any team in the bigs... the twins get more out of a hitter that hits .285 with no power than any team i have ever seen...s*** even cuddyer and hunter are horrid guys to have batting 3 and 5....outside of basement dwelling teams like the nats and royals i struggle to find a team with a worse 3 and 5.....i mean honestly look at hunters #s...hes like crede with speed, yet it feels like he is the best player we face every year...
