  1. anybody out there still want Orton to start?
  2. wow, something like this helps you appreciate the idiocy of Jay Mariotti: " team that hit a major-league-best 242 homers in 2004 has lost four prime power hitters, including Jose Valentin."
  3. QUOTE(jenksd @ Dec 12, 2005 -> 09:44 PM) well hopefully the 5 of us that missed it the first time will catch it this time. I'm one of the 5, so I hope to enjoy it.
  4. QUOTE(Drew @ Dec 11, 2005 -> 11:29 PM) Sure they do. Robert Parish wore 00 for the Celtics and Bulls. There was a hockey goalie in the 1970s who wore 00, I forget his name. Ed Belfour wore 00 one year in the All-Star Game, back when he was still a Blackhawk. And there was also a 00 for the Raiders in the 1960s or 70s, IIRC. Rick White for the Pirates wears 00 I think.
  5. QUOTE(kramer99 @ Dec 6, 2005 -> 04:18 AM) waitwaitwait.....this is the guy who lives in LA correct?...isnt LA the city that couldnt handle a football team even though its in the top 5 of city populations???....oh and im sure hes been to chicago before...Cuz chicago is famous for nothing!....If i can recall LA's most famous for its polution and the Watts district...maybe that guy in prison has nothing better to do than listen to his crappy show, its ok though....we need alot of morons! you forgot the LA riots...and the scumville they call "Hollywood".
  6. QUOTE(soxfan420 @ Dec 5, 2005 -> 01:53 AM) perfect #2 hitter anf fills the cf whole strikes out about 80 times a year obp over .370 hits over .300 and good speed? why has no one mentioned him? It would put the sox leaps beyond everyone else and would not have to trade anymore players, i think with that signing the sox would be done for the year on trades. I've mentioned it a few times, though I always followed it up with "but it ain't gonna happen."
  7. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Dec 2, 2005 -> 01:49 PM) There is some good NBA to watch. Not all of it though. The Suns, Spurs, Pistons, Pacers, Mavs, and a few others are great teams to watch. Figure if you saw Tampa-Royals or Titans-Jets you;d think the other leagues suck. WHile the NBA does seem to have the most fishy officiating, baseball surely isn't immune from it either it's not the teams that is the problem with the NBA, but the officiating. calls like the one for Kobe last night happen way too much.
  8. well Anderson's first in line, but Young and Owens will get their respective shots if Anderson disappoints. it's just that right now, Anderson appears to be the most major league ready.
  9. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 1, 2005 -> 05:24 AM) Has Harrington ever had a good year? besides in college? no.
  10. QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 09:05 PM) Wilkerson would be an ok pick-up. But, he wouldn't bat two like some people have said. He strikes out way too much. he also gets on base and uses the entire field. so if he were to raise the average, the strikeouts wouldn't be as bad.
  11. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 08:19 PM) I like Wilkerson. I think he's a good player. Would the plan be to move him to left and let Pods play CF? I'm assuming thats what your thinking? I don't see why he'd be a really good #2 hitter though. Its not like he's a great average hitter (although maybe he handles the bat better). He is a good OBP guy and despite coming off a down year. One major problem, while he has a great eye, he also will strike out 150 times, plus I don't think the Sox want to go that way defensively. They would be much better off defensiely with Pods in left and Anderson in CF. my understanding is that he's a good defensive CF, so Pods would stay put. my worry is that he's never really hit for average and strikes out a lot.
  12. QUOTE(The Critic @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 08:17 PM) Would the Nats do that straight up? Wonder what their interest level in Marte is? currently, they have no left-handed relievers on their roster, so I'd think they'd go for it.
  13. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 08:14 PM) how about wilkerson for marte?? intriguing, he'd be a good #2 hitter, and I think he's available. this wouldn't surprise me.
  14. I don't see Iguchi moving from #2, unless KW just surprises the hell out of everybody and signs Damon to play CF and hit 2nd, but I don't see it happening. or trades for Wilkerson, which was mentioned in another thread.
  15. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Nov 30, 2005 -> 05:37 PM) I'd need to find out a few more details about Joey Harrington's practice habits before coming to any conclusions. Maybe "Dre" is speaking on behalf of the team. Also, what has Bly done in the past to piss anyone off? hell, he's playing with a club for a hand, and played well vs. the Falcons on Thursday. and I don't recall him having a history of saying anything like this.
  16. QUOTE(LDF @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 12:44 PM) my bad, i was referring about what he did in the minors after the draft. did he step up, did he produce as the scouts thought he would, was he overpowered in the minors. what i read about him is so what confusing. if you're referring to Broadway, I was told they were skipping every other start for him so they don't blow out his arm, as he had just finished the college season. so he'd be on 10 days rest every start, plus the standard tinkering being done in the minors, he'd be somewhat off his game, so the high average against and ERA in single-A are misleading.
  17. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 12:19 PM) Heres BA's take on Broadway Baseball America described Broadway as having an average fastball but a plus curveball, and a good delivery that allows him to have good command of the strike zone. During his liveblogging of the draft, John Sickels said of Broadway, "I like him but I think this is a slight overdraft. I know he's pitching great right now but his rise seems overhyped to me." That is my worry, too, based on nothing more than the fact that he was thought to be a second- or third-round pick until recently, when he had a series of impressive outings against good competition: Houston on April 29 (complete game); Cincinnati on May 6 (7 shutout innings); Louisville on May 13 (complete game, 1 run); nationally ranked Tulane on May 20 (complete game shutout); Southern Miss in the Conference USA tournament on May 26 (six shutout innings); and in the NCAA tournament against Stanford on June 4 (complete game, 1 run). Sickels was predicting that Broadway would be chosen by the Astros with the 24th pick of the first round. Boyd Nation, writing for Baseball Prospectus, called Broadway perhaps the best value among college pitchers in the draft. Nation, who runs the Boyd's World college baseball site, did have some concerns that Broadway ran up some high pitch count games -- four times throwing more than 120 pitches, including two times with more than 130 pitches. I liked the pick more based on that streak he had. shouldn't the ability for a pitcher to turn it up as the season is winding down or rise to the level of his competition (as Broadway did) be something that scouts should take a serious look at? case in point: El Duque shutting down Boston with the bases loaded and no outs.
  18. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Nov 28, 2005 -> 12:25 AM) Is that nearly as good as as keeping PK? I hope KW knows something we all don't know....like some assurance from Paulie that he'd re sign, but it doesn't seem like it. nah, but seems like the best fallback plans if Konerko doesn't re-up.
  19. two ideas: 1) get Bill Mueller and have him DH and play some 3B 2) sign Furcal, move Uribe to 3B and Crede to 1B
  20. QUOTE(WinninUgly @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 02:22 PM) That is really odd. I can see if you were batting leadoff or cleanup, but 8th? How do you get comfortable with the 8th spot, and is it that much different than the 6th or 7th spot? He will bat where the manager feels he needs to bat. I found it kind of stupid myself, but there seems so be something to it. when he won the batting title in 2003 he had his at-bats evenly split between 2, 7, and 8, and hit .400 8th. in 2004 he his .220 batting second, but .354 batting 8th. this past year, .263 batting 7th and .319 batting 8th. it's like he's a totally different hitter in that spot.
  21. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 02:11 AM) Why would Bill Mueller bat 5th in that lineup? don't know if anyone's said this here already, but I think Mueller pretty much refuses to bat anywhere but 8th, anyway, he says he feels most comfortable there.
  22. QUOTE(LDF @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 12:53 PM) and what is your case, losing gio or you take on the anderson. \\ my discussion was gio and overpaying, and the sox not being a murderous row of a team, which ozzie and kw wanted. I guess you may have misinterpreted when I said the Sox "weren't exactly a murderer's row last year." the lineup was weak, and my initial argument was that Thome gives us the bat we need the boost the lineup and giving up two pitching prospects and Rowand isn't a bad deal because the organization is deep in those two areas.
  23. QUOTE(LDF @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 12:53 PM) and what is your case, losing gio or you take on the anderson. \\ my discussion was gio and overpaying, and the sox not being a murderous row of a team, which ozzie and kw wanted. my case is that it's still a good trade, Anderson has speed, which you spoke of. just explain to me how UPGRADING at DH goes against KW and Ozzie's philosphy.
  24. QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 12:36 PM) Anderson is faster than Rowand. helps my case.
  25. QUOTE(LDF @ Nov 26, 2005 -> 12:28 PM) our team was not meant to be a murderous row. our team was meant to be for speed. ozzie love speed. mark b and bmac are not power pitcher Anderson's supposed to be a solid fielder with a good arm and just a step slower than Rowand. not a huge downgrade. plus there's no speed lost at DH, Carl wasn't exactly a burner. Thome's bat helps the lineup, a team can have both speed and power.
