QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 20, 2017 -> 03:14 PM) I happen to think Avi (and Abreu for the most part) have been pretty fun this past year. I think they show they love the game as well. Avi especially looks like a guy having a blast. He hustles. I disagree with your first sentence big time. The only thing fun about this team was Melky the past 2.5 years?? Sale was fun too; and Q was pretty fun for the most part. Maybe you meant the entire 2.5 year period; Avi of course was only good this season and Sale wasn't here this season and Q was only here half this season. The player who seems to have the most fun out there, at least from the games I've attended, was Leury Garcia. You could see it in his step and the way he interacted with fans.

QUOTE (Tony @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 03:30 PM) Nomnation for post of the year award.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 03:17 PM) That's very true, but now it seems so much more spread out. Back in the 90s they had multiple players breaking 60, getting 40 was no big deal, 50 was impressive but attainable. Now it just seems like everyone has 10-20 with one guy breaking 50 and only two at the moment with 40 I agree. that's why I said I think it's more the ball. However, never put anything past the chemists. They probably designed a new one not to be so obvious as to get caught by players heads actually increasing size.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 10:23 AM) Does anyone remember which season the Sox used a 6-man rotation for a decent amount of the year? Was it Sale's first year in the rotation? I don't recall that ever happening.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 02:34 PM) He had a penalty? I remember a bad drop, what was his penalty? False start? Could be wrong but I though he had a late hit on a special teams play or a turn over. Maybe it was someone else.

Fall Instructs - a look at the White Sox prospects
ptatc replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 11:01 AM) Fall Instructs open this week. For the Sox, they open Thursday. Here is our report on the roster, why certain players are there and what to watch for in fall ball. We will have an AFL preview too, up next week most likely. Another great article keeping us informed about mostly lower level guys that are difficult to follow due to the lack of coverage. thanks. Keep it going. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 02:13 PM) Tanner Gentry waived. Looks like Wheaton is coming back or the Bears have a problem with receivers who actually catch the ball. He did have that bad penalty during the game. I'm sure he'll go to the practice squad.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 08:13 AM) This is incredibly hard to believe, you would think the steroid/balco era would have run away with it What makes you think there isn't something like that now. It doesn't appear so but you never know with what they can invent in a lab. I think it's more the ball right now.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 12:46 PM) Its' going to be everybody and a few more. Not counting Brantly, the White Sox have used 30 pitchers this year. Expect more of the same in 2018. I don't think so. I think the rotation will be much more stable. They will keep Rodon, Lopez and Giolito the whole season and let them learn. Shields is signed and I don't think anyone wants him in a trade so unless he is truly awful they will keep him as well. That's 4 that will be consistent, barring injury. That alone will cut down on the number of changes on the staff.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 19, 2017 -> 08:32 AM) It will be on that Monday night in October when Trubisky takes over for good. He's the best QB on the team and while they aren't very good, it's really tough to evaluate other players with Glennon playing. The Bears will be 0-4 and Mitch can take his lumps on the field and learn there. He's getting a brand new coaching staff next year regardless. Most people just want to see him play and that likely includes the other guys on the team. Mike Glennon is a sunk cost at this point and really is irrelevant to the entire conversation. This is the point all along. The Bears should not play Trubiskey because Glennon sucks or the team isn't playing well. Trubiskey should start when the coaching staff thinks he is ready. Doesn't matter if it's this week or next year. ALL decisions should be based on what benefits Trubiskey in the long term.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 18, 2017 -> 03:21 PM) I totally agree. And I am not saying that Trubisky is going to make them into a playoff team this year. I just think Trubisky is the better quarterback and he will learn more playing than he will holding a clipboard I didn't say they were the same players, I said the Raiders let Carr learn the NFL from jump. That's what I want. I understand the offense wasn't the same in college but I also think Trubisky is able to process what he sees better than you think. Heck, Zack Miller said he was ready based on what he sees on practice. Multiple reports have come out saying that he is ready but the job was promised to Glennon. You don't agree, that's fine Glennon was actually sacked only once yesterday. And in the first game, most of the game reviews I read put the sacks on Glennon locking on to receivers and not moving from a spot I don't think Trubisky is gonna come in and turn the team into an instant contender, but I don't see what good there is in throwing Glennon out there to suck the same way he always has when Trubisky could be learning to be a better qb I'm not in the film room. I have no idea what he sees and if he can process it fast enough. This is why i give the coaching staff the benefit of the doubt. They will know when he is ready. The reason the Raiders let him start right i away was he had a the proper experience in college to prepare to succeed at the NFL level. As my post said, trubiskey did not. It has nothing to do with them being the same player. It has everything to do with their preparation.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 18, 2017 -> 03:04 PM) Things change quickly for teams every season. Especially if you have a competent quarterback. The Raiders went from straight up trash to pretty good while letting Derek Carr learn on the way Derek carr played in 43 games in college with a pro style offense. Trubiskey played 13 and didn't know how to take a snap from under center properly because of the spread offense he used in college. Big difference between the two players.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 18, 2017 -> 02:26 PM) Why subject him to those defenses? Kid has to learn what he is looking at, and neither of those defenses is better than Minnesota, who Trubisky would theoretically face twice. You can't coddle him and try and find a soft landing spot. It isn't there, this is the NFL. So next year there is no learning curve, he is ready to go. It isn't a rush if he is better than Glennon. And he has an offense to work with, he has good tight ends and running backs, but they are being marginalized because defenses are teeing off on a slow quarterback But if he is not ready to read the defenses and come up with the proper adjustment, he will be a danger to himself and the other players out there. There is a difference between not executing well and not choosing the proper response to the defense. The Pittsburgh and GB defenses may not be much better on stats but both are very complicated with many zone blitzes. There is also more time to prepare after the GB game with going from a Thursday game to the following Sunday. An extra few days to prepare for his first opponent can only help. Fox has to be worried for his job. There is no way he would not play Trubiskey if he thought he was ready unless Pace has told him not to. They may not be able to find a soft spot to land but they can put him in the best situation to play well. That is the job of a coach.

Are we allowed to get nervous about Moncada at this point?
ptatc replied to ron883's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (SCCWS @ Sep 17, 2017 -> 02:47 PM) Rookies struggling and not listening to coaches should not happen. Remember when Moncada screwed up in Boston during a pennant race last year he was benched for the last 3 weeks. No, but it does all the time. Some younger players either think they know it all or are too afraid to try anything different than what has had success for them. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 18, 2017 -> 02:00 PM) The "lets switch him out in game 5" rumor is dumb imo. Why let Glennon sink this team any further? If Trubisky is the better Qb, then you put him in. There is no easy part of the schedule, after the packers they play Minnesota and Detroit twice, Carolina, Philly and Cinci. Those aren't easy defenses! If Glennon comes out and s***s the bed in the first half again on sunday, it's gonna get hostile in Soldier Field Because this team is not beating Pittsburgh or Green Bay with or without Glennon. Why subject Trubisky to either of those defenses. Pittsburgh's defense is really good and with Capers running GB's defense it's really complicated.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 18, 2017 -> 01:27 PM) It is football, plain and simple and the increase in injuries is something the league has to figure out because it is legitimately affecting the quality of the league. Personally, I think it's the lack of practice time. No ones knows how to hit or avoid being hit as well as they used to. The number of overuse type injuries is way down but the number of collision type injuries is up.

Lost both Greg Olsen and Jordy Nelson to injury. I'm dead.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Sep 15, 2017 -> 07:11 PM) Agree. Why did we draft him so high? Same criticism back then. Same reason they drafted Sale in the first. They aren't afraid of odd deliveries.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 03:21 PM) Hahn got screwed by the Padres on that deal with the dual sets of medicals. It still pisses me off that MLB did nothing about it. You could tell the guy had back and/or shoulder problems when we got him by how he reacted trying to stretch after many pitches. Now he can't even throw over the top anymore. I think he made the change in arm angle on purpose. He doesn't have the stuff anymore so he is dropping down to get more movement and deception with the pitches. I don't think there is anyway he is still pitching if it was due to pain.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 03:55 PM) When MLB voided the Boston contracts, they also banned them from international signings for a period of time. My guess would be that it won't be the initial contract that would be a problem, it would be any additional extension which would come later. But if it were proven that the initial contract violated the rules, yes they could void it and make him a free agent again, and block the violating team from signing him again. Weren't the Boston contracts minor league contracts? I don't quite remember. I think an MLB contract would be something entirely different, especially in the eyes of the Union. They would fight that with the huge amount of dollars involved.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 09:25 AM) I can't help but think that with every potential advantage that the Sox might use to sell this team, there are multiple other teams who could offer better. If he wanted to go to a team that liked Japanese players, but can't offer money, why not LA? They worshiped Hideo Nomo. They have also signed a lot more Japanese players and have a bigger Japanese population base than Chicago does. I believe I said some teams. Not all. LAD has that same advantage as the Sox. Your question "why not LA" could be said "why not the sox" from this point of view. The difference in the money between the teams in this first contract is inconsequential to the next contract. It will be interesting how he chooses the first contract.

QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 13, 2017 -> 10:48 PM) This team isn't even close to competing in my book. No bullpen and only 2/5th's of a starting rotation. Plus a number of easy outs in the current lineup. Not even close. Stay the course, keep acquiring young talent, let them mature in the minor leagues, DO NOT rush them...and we'll see you in 2020. They should be ready by them. There is no reason to rush them. However, you bring them up when they are ready for the challenge of the MLB and not wait until some arbitrary timeline.

QUOTE (ron883 @ Sep 13, 2017 -> 08:31 PM) Forgot about catcher. Tim Anderson will be the catcher There is absolutely no way this happens.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 24, 2017 -> 09:03 AM) Eh. I think the idea that people who played baseball apparently can't understand launch angles is a bit silly. Apparently someone got to Avi because that was a big focus of his this off season. Every baseball player has known about launch angles. They just didn't have the terms or the numbers. Those are for the non-players. The issue has always been how much do you increase the launch angle before you have too much of an upper cut (that's what us old people called the launch angle) and you just pop everything up. Just like with anything else it is a fine line before you have diminishing returns and some players can't make that adjustment.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 14, 2017 -> 08:39 AM) Right -- by all accounts, the only thing the Sox could POTENTIALLY offer is the right playing time situation, but the likelihood that at least one other, more desirable team won't also do it is extremely small. I think another potential advantage over some teams is Iguchi. I'm sure Otani has asked other players who played in the states how they were treated by the organizations. From all accounts Iguchi enjoyed his time here. Other teams have had Japanese players as well but I'm sure they have a good reputation.
