  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 05:41 PM) Per press reports yeah it was That's what I recall as well. I perceived the plan as it was for the rest of the season to continue to build him towards being able to handle the full time load as a starter. He never really went through the innings building phase in the minors as he pretty much came straight to the MLB.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 04:46 PM) My point goes back to my first post, the undying love for Don Cooper is the exact opposite from any other White Sox non player. I have stated numerous times in this thread, I think he is fine. But it's like no pitcher would ever have success if Coop wasn't the pitching coach. I give the players more credit for being successful. If it all was about Coop wisdom, and not talent and execution, Coop would have had a better pitching career himself. I don't think if he quit at the end of the season the team ERA would be a run lower next year because of it. I also don't think it would be a run higher. I agree it's not black and white where they wouldn't do anything without him. But I also think you are vastly underrating him as "fine." He is one of the better coaches in the league. That rates far above fine.
  3. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 11:19 PM) Nice point man. I like that you've outlined how it's not always as cut & dry as "gain extra year=smart" and "not gain extra year=dumb". The respect gained by letting him break camp if he's earned it could pay out tenfold in the long run (likeliness of extension due to goodwill increases dramatically) compared to the extra year of time. Very true. you don't think that the players talk about this. There is bad blood when the players know they were kept down just to gain the extra year of decreased earnings. So they will need to decide if that is worth making the player want to leave when they become an FA in their prime.
  4. QUOTE (Wanne @ Aug 29, 2017 -> 07:59 PM) I have a hard time imagining them doing that...it'll certainly cause some backlash from the fans IMO. It was obvious since the Cards game...they spoon fed Glennon with dink and dunk plays to keep his psyche in check...Loggains did a better job (as did Glennon) with Tennessee...but they still coddled him. Everything I've read...people in that locker room know who that alpha is. Unless you're conceding another throwaway season...fine...but this kind of move would send a horrible signal to the fan base. I honestly wish we still had Gase instead of Fox...actually pretty sick of that dude already. I've heard the opposite on the radio. Most agree that Glennon is much better in the practices than Trubiskey. He is obviously is more physically talented but has trouble reading the defenses and making the correct decision. I've got no first hand knwloedge of this but that's what the radio reporters were saying.
  5. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 06:28 PM) Ian Rapoport is reporting he likely has other damage to the knee. Let's hope like hell it isn't the PCL. I've heard you are never the same player after tearing that (although ptatc could probably confirm or deny that). It's really individualized with the PCL. It's the rotation point of the knee so it's important but I've seen more athletes adapt to it being torn than the ACL. As someone stated earlier, there still isn't a good surgery for it, so it's not something that is fixed easily.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 04:12 PM) Never said that. He pointed out old hitters who failed. Just pointed out pitchingwith similar circumstance. Then what is your point? One of the better coaches, average coach, bad coach?
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 04:09 PM) Wasn't Cooper in agreement with management in 2012 when Sale's arm was sore to start the season and he was on the DL and the organization said they were moving him to the bullpen and Chris Sale threw the first tantrum in the locker room we know of and said absolutely not? Don't know for sure but I would guess so. But I also recall that it was a move to protect his arm at the time and wasn't a permanent move to the pen.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 02:11 PM) It really doesn't. Samardjiza? Latos? Holland? Shields? Liriano? So he can't be one of the better coaches in the league if he isn't 100% successful? Age and injuries do take their toll as well.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2017 -> 09:45 AM) Javy Vazquez Francisco Liriano Tommy Kahnle went to the minors, where Coop isn't and figured out how to throw strikes. Coop's a genius. Tyler Clippard having a decent 10 innings....Don Cooper. James Shields, Derek Holland sucking more than they ever have...nothing Coop could do. For some reason, I doubt Chris Sale is a #5 starter without Don Cooper. White Sox trying to win with a depleted roster and lose, manager sucks. White Sox leading off a done Darrin Erstad and can't hit... obviously the hitting coach sucks. Not only that, but Coop has been on the radio many times ripping White Sox fans and their refusal to go to games. If a poster says something like that, they get rebutted like crazy, but Coop? Not so much. There are hundreds more. I do give some credit for Chris Sale to Cooper for two reasons. The first is that they drafted him with the intention of keeping him as a starter. Cooper had input on this and many other organizations wouldn't. The secondis allowing Sale to retain his scary mechanics and working with them. This again was not tge path that many other organizations would have taken. Cooper is not bulletproof but his successes compared to most other coaches should have hi about as close as one can be.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) I use this site that keeps track of both WAR lost and total DL days. 2015 we were at the bottom of the league. It's hard to find all of them because they started paywalling their site about a year ago, but here's "DL games lost 2010-2016" and we're 3rd fewest games lost to the DL. Houston has been the healthiest in that period, but likely affected by the fact that they were rebuilding. Detroit has also been exceptionally healthy. The White Sox have been exceptionally healthy the last 5 years compared to the rest of the league. That was an issue that should have gone into our planning - we're pretty good at preventing TJS for pitchers, but other than that, eventually we were going to be less healthy than we were in those seasons. Injuries starting to pile up this year wasn't surprising to me, nor would it be surprising to see this level of injury the next few years as this is pretty close to average. Detroit, interestingly enough, needed to think about that too - if a team wins 85 games and is "unusually healthy", then when they have a normal number of injuries they'd be winning fewer games the next year out. I also think the Sox have been unusually conservative by their own standards. Rodon and others have missed more time or been placed on the DL that in a year where they wanted to be competitive would have been handled differently.
  11. QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Aug 27, 2017 -> 03:02 PM) Throwing strikes=Good Not missing bats=Bad Despite the great performance, I'm not encouraged that Giolito has been 90-92 today. I honestly don't know what to expect from him velocity wise. I've heard mid 90s and he's been low 90s ever since the 2nd inning of last start. That velocity is meat in the majors usually from a RHP. I was at the game today. Lows 90's with that movement will play just fine. It moves much more than most FB at that velocity do. My guess is that he is listening to Cooper's philosophy of less velocity with more movement is better. He probably could still throw 96 with it being much straighter. Besides with his TJ history he shouldn't be trying to hit the radar gun at the max too often.
  12. QUOTE (ron883 @ Aug 26, 2017 -> 12:19 PM) Man, that sounds awful. Are stress breaks like that typically due to genetics? No. The only thing that is somewhat related to genetics is osteopenia.
  13. QUOTE (ron883 @ Aug 26, 2017 -> 12:25 AM) I'm not liking the sound of this. Definitely has kevin white vibes. It's not to that extent. Tests showed multiple "cracks" for lack of a better word in White's tibia. This is why the surgery was necessary. Moncada's didn't show any of these by all reports.
  14. QUOTE (Knuckles @ Aug 25, 2017 -> 08:16 PM) I actually thought same, with the Harper injury. Didn't they call it a bone bruise? Seemed strange to me. Many people use that term. bone can't really bruise. There can be edema in the marrow and inside. Bone has no nerve endings. There is no sensation in bone. The covering of the bone called periosteum is a connective tissue that contain the nerves. So these injuries are really periostial irritations with a stress reaction (if no trauma), a small "crack" in the bone (with trauma) or a disruption of the blood flow to the area. But the bone itself doesn't actually hurt. However, the term bone bruise is used because in the case of trauma it is very similar and who wants to say "he has a a periostial irritation with a minor stress reaction".
  15. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 25, 2017 -> 06:46 PM) Either this place is dead from the Sox poor record or this thread has run its course even before the whole thing started. This is supposed to be fun, celebrate the little leagues, honor people who made you the player you are now and those who support you. Wear colorful cleats, swing a colorful bat . it's a pretty big deal around the league this weekend. Are they selling it ? Of course what good idea doesn't get promoted and sold these days ? It's a consumer society. I'm not going to spend any money on it but I still think it's something to promote baseball, it's cool it's fun , it gets people talking . Baseball is losing interest in US kids. It's a problem that must be dealt with. This is part of that process. Lighten up all you Francis's. Agreed. It's getting a little to serious. It's a sport/entertainment.
  16. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Aug 25, 2017 -> 05:38 PM) Didn't Tilson have a stress reaction? Yes he did. But in his foot. The smaller, curved bones in the foot make it a much nastier injury.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2017 -> 04:57 PM) Lauren Magiera‏Verified account @LaurenMagiera 29m29 minutes ago Yoan Moncada said he underwent an MRI and blood tests this morning. Came back clear, just shin splints and a contusion. #Sox Ok. There could be a separate contusion but i don't think so.
  18. QUOTE (Scoots @ Aug 25, 2017 -> 03:35 PM) Its the same injury Matt Davidson had. Contusion. He'll be back first or second week of September. Doesn't give us much more time to see him this year though. It's not a contusion though. Davidson had a hit on the wrist to cause a contusion of the soft tissue ie bruise. Moncada did not have this. the "bone contusion" really doesn't exist. They are using an improper term.
  19. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Aug 25, 2017 -> 05:19 PM) I am going to go to the game in a week and see nobody I wanted to see. Lopez, Moncada, and not possibly Nicky? They've been winning too any games. Put the hot players on the DL to stem the winning.
  20. QUOTE (Lillian @ Aug 25, 2017 -> 03:02 PM) "Ptatc," should we be worried about Moncada's long term health, or is this the kind of thing that will heal? When I hear "shin splints,' I think of Micky Mantle. That was the condition to which was attributed his loss of, once dynamic speed. Is shin splints the correct label for this diagnosis? Most likely not. There are occasions where it lasts even after periods of rest like Kevin White where bony changes occurred. Generally though conservative interventions and rest will take care of it. They will need to look at his off season and in season training and especially footwear to look for the etiology. Baseball footwear can really cause issues due to the firmness of the outsole and spikes.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 25, 2017 -> 01:26 PM) So yeah, the 10 day DL people are being serious about that right? And it's a "Bone contusion"? Is that going to fit under the realm of shin splints? Or did he get HBP there or something and make it worse? Exactly. It's not really a contusion but the effect on the bone is the same as the stress reaction. It's just an insidious onset as opposed to a traumatic one.
  22. QUOTE (Knuckles @ Aug 25, 2017 -> 01:22 PM) Being put on 10 day DL with bone contusion. Matty Davidson reinstated. Bone contusion is not the correct term. It really should be the stress reaction terminology. But I think that will scare too many people.
  23. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 24, 2017 -> 11:31 PM) The massive revenue the team takes in from its current TV and radio contracts, along with the guaranteed profits courtesy of the sweetheart lease deal, paid for Robert's bonus long before this windfall came along. Hostetler was on the radio over the weekend and made a point amount the big increase in the scouting, analytics and minor league budget this past year. He said this priority coincided with the rebuilding philosophy
  24. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 24, 2017 -> 11:02 PM) I know I am talking to myself at this point but saw a perfect example of some of what I was talking about above in tonight's Twins/Sox game. Greg Gibson was the home plate umpire. Of course like all umps he set up over the catchers right shoulder . To me that gives him a better view of the catchers right hand side of the plate. He seemed very accurate on the balls and strikes there. On the opposite side of the plate he wasn't so good. Several times he called pitches by Berrios that were clearly off the plate according to pitch trax on the telecast strikes .I'm pretty sure it happened 3 or 4 times ,some more egregious than others. I couldn't help but think those pitches will go down as well framed since they were called strikes when in reality it was clearly on the umpire and perhaps Berrios who seemed to have the pitches to his arm side fade off the plate many times during the night , up and in to righties but down and away to left handers. Now if I was keeping a book on umps I'd investigate games with Gibson behind the plate and see if that is the way he consistently calls games. You are absolutely correct on this. I noticed the same thing during the game. Narvaez was befuddled by some of the calls on the outside part of the plate and Berrios was smart enough to keep throwing it out there.
