  1. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 04:53 PM) I'd still think he goes in the 2nd to 3rd round. Anything past that, I can't imagine he signs. That would be a real stretch unless he allows them extra testing. This is a big risk.
  2. Teams cold do a nerve conduction velocity test to try to determine the extent of the injury and estimate how much damage there is and the possibility of how much function will return. This will be a really interesting case.
  3. QUOTE (shipps @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 04:50 PM) So is Smith like a 4th rounder now? Only if he wants to take the deal. Can't he just not sign and go back into the draft next year?
  4. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 04:38 PM) @RapSheet Difficult day for #NotreDame LB Jaylon Smith, who had his medicals. Ankle & knee nerve issues, teams believe he's out for 2016 -- at least Sounds like Smith was just hoping for the best. Sucks, he was going to be a really good player. Yeah, must be the peroneal nerve that wraps around the fibula near the area he had the lateral knee damage. Would be really interesting to see where it was at the time of injury and where it is now. There is a good chance it will heal to a good extent. Nerves heal for about 18 months. Might be worth a mid-round pick to try to get him this year, if he will take the deal.
  5. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 03:49 PM) Doesn't mean he isn't pitching in B games or to our minor leaguers. Yes. He will be throwing getting the arm in shape with less stress. They probably want to get Johnson, Latos and Danks into a competition against teams.
  6. QUOTE (scs787 @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 09:34 PM) His combine physical is tomorrow, so hopefully we get more information tomorrow or soon there after. Im surprised he is agreeing to a physical there. I would've thought they postpone it to later.
  7. QUOTE (scs787 @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 09:12 PM) =( That's a bummer. Just 2 days ago I was reading articles on him and was getting excited about the possibility of drafting him at 11(seeing as a lot of guys are calling him a top 3 prospect and comparing him to the likes of Patrick Willis and Derrick Johnson). I guess it could be a good thing as he's probably gonna plummet in the draft. Considering what we know now, would you consider him in the 2nd? 3rd? If it was a significant nerve injury I would think it would be making the news rounds by now but who knows. I would think closer to the draft we will find out. Im sure teams will get medical reports before that.
  8. QUOTE (scs787 @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 08:41 PM) Paging Ptact.... Jaylon Smith is already walking, but is wearing something called a AFO. A guy on Twitter who may or may not have 17+ years as an NFL phycisian says that would indicate nerve damage. Earlier reports said there was no nerve damage. What gives? Does the AFO 100% indicate nerve damage, or could it just be part of the rehab? I was just starting to think the Bears should take a chance on him in the first, but this would knock me back out of that consideration. An AFO is an Ankle Foot Orthosis. Its a plastic brace that goes along the back of the calf and into the shoe to hold the foot up. This could be a significant problem. It is used when soneone doesn't have control of the anterior tibialis muscle which bring the foot up into dorsiflexion. It is used with people who have has strokes or a paralysis of the tibial nerve which winds around the head of the fibula. This really has no place in rehab for the ACL. However, he also had some lateral knee damage. He could have injured the nerve at that point. The good news is that nerves can heal for about 18 months so he will regain at least some back. The bad news is teams won't know how it will heal before the draft. I'm not sure why else he would be wearing an AFO, unless the lateral knee damage was repaired in some odd way that they needed to stabilize the lower extremity but thats grasping at straws.
  9. I really like his attempt. It's looks good for the lay person without the medical background and let's face it even we don't have a good process to figure all of them out. I'm not sure how it's going to work but he uses some key variables that I would agree make a pitcher susceptible to UCL injury. 1. Release point: this is a way of looking at how extended the elbow is during the motion which is a good indicator of elbow stress. 2. Previous arm injury: every pitch thrown creates enough force to tear the UCL. The only thing holding it together is the muscles support or the wrist flexors. After an injury and time off the muscles are weakened. If they aren't strengthening appropriately (exercises and gradual build up) the UCL can have issues. 3. How hard they are throwing and how often. The over exertion can fatigue the muscles earlier and also lead to poor mechanics. I'll be interested to follow it.
  10. QUOTE (hi8is @ Feb 13, 2016 -> 04:06 PM) ptact is the man. He's got a legitimate medical background and worked professionally in the sports PT world if memory serves correct. Helped me out here when I had a boxers fracture. Big shout out to him - great guy to have on this board. Another example of Soxtalk winning. The thoracic outlet sydrome is the most common reason. The rib compresses on the neurovascular bu dle and they lose their sensation in their fingers. This can happen with a normal rib or sometimes people have an accessory or extra rib. We usually can help them without the surgery but sometimes it's necessary. Edit: sorry the response was supposed to be for the "why would they have a rib removed" question. Thanks for the complement. I have worked for nfl, mlb, Olympic teams as well a variety of high schools around the south suburbs.
  11. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Feb 13, 2016 -> 08:07 AM) Holy cow! Thanks for the in-depth response, seriously, that's good insight right there and I appreciate it. Any idea as to what potential long term effects this may have for Frankie? Even though Frankie is no longer a part of the Sox organization, I still wish him the best and hope he can continue his dream of becoming an MLB pitcher. Everything I've read about him has indicated he's a really good guy and its saddening to hear of things like this happening to people like Frankie. Shouldn't be much of an issue. I'm guessing it's an upper rib from the description but they really didn't say. Those won't effect much functionally. If it's a mid or lower rib, it's going to hurt like crazy to breathe and especially cough for a good month. That may take a little longer. However, I've never worked with an athlete with a mid to lower rib removed.
  12. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Feb 12, 2016 -> 09:20 PM) Could it stem from his excess weight and the throwing motion that comes from being a pitcher or even a poor diet combined with weight training? I had never heard of such a thing from a pitcher and didn't know Beckett had this done. For anyone interested in Thoratic Outlet Syndrome: http://www.medicinenet.com/thoracic_outlet...ome/article.htm Its a common procedure for thoracic outlet especially if they have an accessory 1st rib. I've seen stress reactions in ribs. They are rare. The couple I've seen are in Olympic caliber triathletes usually from an improper arrow position in biking. However, they are treated conservatively. I've never heard of any bone being removed for a stress reaction. In the most severe cases they do surgery to reinforce the bone like kevin white. This isn't an option for the rib due to the size and shape of the bone but removing it is really drastic.
  13. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Feb 12, 2016 -> 08:27 PM) http://www.truebluela.com/2016/2/12/109823...gers-2-4-months I wish Frankie well in his recovery. That's really odd. I've never heard of removing a rib because of a stress reaction in it. That's a really drastic measure.
  14. Maurice White from Earth, Wind and Fire. He was 74. I'm really getting old. The afterlife supergroup expands.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 11:25 PM) http://www.csnchicago.com/white-sox/todd-f...-fans-teammates Depending on what your feelings are about the way the Sox run things, there's a quote "it's so laid-back and a comfortable atmosphere..." Not sure exactly how well that atmosphere has helped in the past decade. Exactly how many games has he been in the clubhouse for? Something tells me the attitude of the fans and players is a little different than the clubhouse. You are really misrepresenting the discussion or are making drastic assumptions about the clubhouse.
  16. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 05:59 PM) Is Shwarber catching? Soler the 4th OF? Can't see them paying Fowler a good amount to be the 4th OF. Fowler would start in center.
  17. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 08:00 AM) Compensation for free agents is likely going to be gone very soon anyway. Steve Stone was on that csn show yesterday evening and thinks it's really stupid which I tend to agree with. Dependson what the owners gain in the negotiations. If its a worldwide draft, it may be worth it
  18. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 11:13 AM) Goodbye, 14 HR Adam Eaton? Actually, if he played with the injury since July, he should have better strength this year. Not to say that it is directly correlated to HR but he should have a better chance this year.
  19. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 10:57 AM) Neither Turner nor Beck have anywhere near the credentials of E Johnson. They need to develop depth, but it also appears they don't trust Johnson (and he's not a Cooper guy). Maybe he's the one they should trade for a young OF. Im not sure you understand the concept of depth. Turner and Beck are there for when someone in the rotation has issues. They need at leasr 6-7 starters throughout the year.
  20. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 01:42 AM) What I mean is advocating for "strategic retooling" while being more careful about making big mistakes in free agency and still maintaining your top minor league pieces...kind of like tightrope walking, since there's little margin for error over the next couple of years. That strategy sounds awfully familiar. This is a good response to people who have said that the FO doesn't have a plan.
  21. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 04:20 AM) Funny how Shark bets on himself and has a horrendous year and still lands a $90 mil contract. I wonder what the contract would have been if he had a good year? Just shows you the value of pitching.,
  22. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 06:15 PM) Hahn is a great politician, trying to address rebuild issues v stopgap solutions. Not sure he gets it really. Is there a plan? He think they're closer to winning a ring now. Not sure I agree. I would agree they are closer. They added three bats to imporve the lineup. However, are they close to actually winning it? I wouldn't say that.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 05:47 PM) Shouldn't be if he can't play SS Probably fine to give the starter a day of on occasion but not really in the competition for the starter.
  24. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 06:11 PM) They scheduled it there for a reason. Only open to hotel package buyers and the earliest seminar so some may be stuck at work. Is Hahn going to be doing any more qandas throughout the weekend? Took me a few seconds of "what did he mistype" before I figured it out.
  25. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 06:05 PM) I'm at the Hahn/Ventura Q&A and there is NO ONE HERE. LOL! They have killed the enthusiasm for this club. Could not believe it. I think this makes a better statement and shows more class than going there and booing. Maybe the message will get through.
