QUOTE (ventura_abreu @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 08:07 PM) Is Delmonico getting a bit overlooked as a potential good player for the White Sox? Don't know if the player is any good but it's my favorite steak

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 01:00 PM) I don't know. I bet it was used at least as an outline. A lot of things went right then. And for the most part, they acquired guys that were maybe a year closer than this current group of acquistions to contributing on the major league roster. There are a couple of guys here that could probably get their feet wet this year, but a lot of them are at least a couple of years away, and rookies usually don't lead to many wins. If it happens again where most everything goes right, it could be 3 years. Some problems, it could be a decade. People who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 11:28 AM) There are two huge differences between us and the Cubs. They stocked on positional talent. We have not. They hit free agency and the international markets hard. I don't see that happening for us. Thinking mid-term, Frazier and Cabrera will be gone. Avi probably isn't going to change. That leaves 3B, LF and RF open... for who? CF is a position of weakness both at the majors and in the minors. Our best hope is for one of Engel or May to get it? Odds of that? Probably not great. Catcher is a weakness. Our best hope of a catcher is years away... if he can stick. That right there is half of our line up in the next two years, with nothing clear in sight. That is without considering Abreu is on track for FA after 2019. Pitching I think we will be more than fine in. Positional players? I just don't see it today. Positional players have have less risk than pitchers in FA. I think they will be willing to pony up for some when the time comes. The Sox and the Cubs have done the same thing just with a different group. I would much rather have cost controlled pitching and pay for the positional players.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 11:19 AM) This is the exact reason that people are too optimistic on this rebuild. The window is way too short for the guys who are in the minors now to be productive at a level to put us on a playoff arc. Plus there is still not nearly enough offensive talent even here to achieve that. Like it or not, with not getting much offensive talent in the Eaton/Sale deals, plus not getting anything for Q as of yet, the timeline really hasn't advanced that far. We still need drafts and development out of players we don't have yet. I disagree. I think 2019 is the year that could be the first of the competitive years. They should have Giolito, Lopez, Fulmer and Burdi in the minors in 2017. In 2018 they should all be ready to be at the MLB level. By 2019 they should all be ready to contribute a successful season. They will also have Rodon and possibly Q. This will create an outstanding pitching staff at a very cheap level. Moncada will be ready by then. They will then build more offense in FA which are more reasonable contracts than pitching. Will they definitely win in 2019? No, but that will be the first competitive year.

The Significant Hurt - Prospect injury updates
ptatc replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
Didn't know that Tilson had a previous stress fracture in his foot. There has to be some biomechanical issue there. Hopefully, they can figure it out. -
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Mar 21, 2017 -> 10:04 AM) I like the deal. There is going to be some downside risk in the last guaranteed year or two, but the upside far outweighs the downside. The thing that worries me about these types of deals, and even moreso with a guy like Anderson who hasn't even accrued a full year of service time, is what it does to them mentally. Anderson now knows how much money he is going to make the next 6 years of his life, no matter how well or poor he performs on the field. It is certainly conceivable that some players may lose some their drive to become the best player they can be, since they're making the same amount of money no matter what happens. Hahn has a pretty great track record with these types of extensions, and obviously the Sox know Tim Anderson far better than anyone posting here, so I trust that they think Timmy will be determined no matter what. But it is always something to consider. It is only human nature to work harder when you know there is significant benefits in doing so. This is true only if money is your motivating factor. If he truly wants to be the best player he can be, just to be the best player he can be, then it won't be a factor. Like you said, the organization knows him better than anyone so would would think that the latter situation is true.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 17, 2017 -> 10:01 AM) I mean, I'm an older guy too (relative to most of the board anyway, I assume). I like explanations, and some stories sprinkled in. But he doesn't really explain things, he just tells a lot of stories. I am not saying I want super-dry either. I will probably get crucified for this, but I really like the Cubs TV team. They are entertaining, have fun, but deliver good info and are open to all manner of angles. They incorporate advanced stats, but aren't dry. It is possible to do both. I agree you can do both but it is difficult and most can't do it without sounding condescending. The Cubs broadcast can be good. But then Len starts into his "I don't know how many times I can explain these numbers and why people refuse to listen to it" spiel. I get what he's doing but just explain what you want and move on. He's like the post game host who needs to constantly prove a point.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 17, 2017 -> 09:43 AM) It wasn't a question, but we're on the same page regardless. Ok. Let's take it step by step I was responding to the fact that the Sox will lose 100 games in 2018. I said the trades would look awful if they lose 100 games in 2018. He responded by saying they will lose 100 without Q, Frazier , Robertson et al. My response was that with the players they acquired, they trades would look awful because the players they acquired should be contributing. To which you responded that you didn't think some of the lesser players would be ready. Hence, I wasn't implying you asked a question but it was from the conversation with the other poster.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 17, 2017 -> 08:04 AM) I like Hawk and Jason. One thing they have got to do is if they continue with Sox math, and I'm not on Twitter so I don't participate, they need to allow for more than the same guy winning every time. OK dude, we get it. You know all the players numbers and have 3 Ipads set up to BR to get all the answers. Once you win, you should be ineligible to win again until the next season. I agree. It's a good combo.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 17, 2017 -> 07:17 AM) Hawk is, today at least, an awful announcer. He throws in a constant stream of drawl-tinged one-liners that got old a decade ago pretty constantly, leaves huge gaps of silence when he's not in a good mood, and utterly refuses to acknowledge most any useful statistical measures. He spends half his broadcasts telling old war stories, and they're the same ones. My question is, what is he actually good at? I will say that when the team is doing well, he's obviously very excited about it and that helps bring the fans in emotionally. I think that's his only positive quality in the job, to be honest. Entertaining. He tries to explain to fans why something is happening on the field. Too many of the broadcasters that use stats instead of examples try to educate fans on numbers behind the game instead of the game. Personally, and I know I'm old and in the minority, but I enjoy hearing about comparisons of player style and approaches to the game. Granted, Hawk goes overboard but I like it better than the dry professionalism in an entertainment industry.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 17, 2017 -> 03:04 AM) You actually think guys like Basabe, Diaz will be ready by that point? Hell, even Kopech might be a stretch. (although I can see him midseason possibly. He'd have to really go off this year to start bt 2018 and the sox have already said they're not rushing guys) Not those but Giolito, Lopez and Moncada should be. Those are the impact talents of the trades. If they aren't making significant contributions by the middle of 2018, they were bad trades. Remember the question was "will the Sox lose 100 games in 2018." If those three can't do that, the Sox have no hope beyond 2018 either. Kopech will not be ready until 2019 at the earliest. Who know about Diaz, Dunning and Basabe.

QUOTE (WBWSF @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 08:33 PM) Hawk is not stupid. He realizes this is going to be a train wreck of a team for at least the next 2 seasons. It's not any fun being a announcer for a team thats going to lose 100 games a year for the next couple of seasons. If they lose 100 games in 2018 they will have have 2 awful trades with Sale and Eaton.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 06:50 PM) Something changed. He seemed really happy with the situation at the end of last season. So either it is a health issue with himself or maybe his wife or someone, I am thinking maybe his eyesight, or something hit him. Maybe he realizes the team is going to suck and it won't be pretty for a few years. Whatever it is,I wish him well. +1 We'll have to get ready for the bland, professional with stories about numbers.

Sounds like many of the posters on this board.

QUOTE (Donaldo @ Mar 15, 2017 -> 08:28 PM) He's not a very exciting interview, is he? I don't understand why he sounded so secretive when asked about some of the shenanigans going on (Giolito giving acting lessons, somebody dressing up as The Undertaker). Sounds to me like they're having fun and bonding as a team... that's a GOOD thing. Most of the questions he was asked were pretty inane IMO. The only players they asked about were Giolito and Lopez. A bad interview, but... it happens sometimes. It is a good thing but they are things that need to be kept in-house with the team. Who knows what is going to offend fans today. Most "hazing" is banned now and people could miscontrue what is happening.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 15, 2017 -> 01:14 PM) IF (and it's a big if) Kopech reaches his full potential, I think he'll be the best pitcher in baseball. His stuff is that good. Million dollar arm, ten cent head. Not that's necessarily the case here as I haven't heard that about him, but players talented than him have busted.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 15, 2017 -> 12:26 PM) That 110 mph pitch continues to be mischaracterized in the press. It was an underweight baseball, which is key to understanding how he hit that velo. People keep leaving that out. Not looking at you Gooch, I mean the author of this and other articles. Not only that but I believe it was during the goofy drill where they are allowed to fall roll roll for the follow through.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Mar 14, 2017 -> 07:00 PM) Personally don't think it was that as much as Joba's substance abuse issues that derailed his career -- but the Yankees really didn't do him many favors his 2nd year jerking him around. Nice to see Yoan on top. No doubt. That's tough on a young player. I also agree that his lack of care of the body was probably the primary reason.
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 15, 2017 -> 05:45 AM) So Lance Briggs apparently is battling CTE. Which is kind of weird because they can't tell if someone has it have it until they take the brain out and cut it open.
-
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 08:37 PM) This is a gross oversimplification. What if he tears it up in the 1st half next year? The Sox would certainly move him for the right package. No one is going to give the Sox much for Saladino. He's a good utility player. If he tears it up for the first half, that's all it will be a good first half. Every team and system has these guys.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 05:54 PM) Dude, ptatc has an actual background in this profession. He's right that stress reactions are very unpredictable. I'm betting on the fact that they caught it early, but it's a shot in the dark either way.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 05:01 PM) Which is why, if this is true, and it appears so, you wait until mid summer and re assess your options. There will be a lot more pressure relative to Hahn and the Sox, on any team looking to get better near the deadline then in March. I agree. I still think they should keep him. I don't think the other GM's will pay what he is worth but who knows one may get desperate come July.
