Bryce Harper speaks truth about baseball's unwritten rules
ptatc replied to knightni's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Mar 10, 2016 -> 04:42 PM) Bryce is so right and the league of old men can just go away please. He's only right if you take the good with the bad. If you celebrate the HR don't pout and leave when a reporter grills you when you strike out to lose a playoff game. This is the Cam Newton test. Are you a jerk or "a guy who likes to have fun?" If you celebrate when you are winning stand up and take it when you lose. Unfortunately, most players fall under the latter category and this is what makes them look bad and reveal they are just showing up the other team and not "enjoying the game." -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Mar 9, 2016 -> 04:00 PM) Wonder how much coin. He was looking for 8M per year. Does this mean Long moves to the LT or is he back at guard? Guard. IMO.

86 good pitching, better defense. -
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 8, 2016 -> 05:46 PM) That's what I mean. Three starts + the simulated games and side sessions. Oh sorry. I agree with you 100%

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 8, 2016 -> 12:21 PM) This is what I'm thinking as well. Nice post. As long as none of them are hurt, 3 starts each should give them more than enough reps for the beginning of the season. There's no need to overuse them in exhibition games IMO. Three starts each is nowhere near enough work prior to beginning the season. They are currently doing "B" games and the dreaded simulated games on the side to get work in. The fewer games means less stressful innings on the arms.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 6, 2016 -> 07:18 PM) I think he plays LF coming off the shoulder surgery since Melky has a good enough arm fir RF. His shoulder will be fine by the beginning of the regular season. It's a 3-4 month rehab and then sport specific strengthening. He is right on pace.

Spring Training 3/5: White Sox vs Royals 2:05 start
ptatc replied to Whisox05's topic in 2016 Season in Review
QUOTE (hi8is @ Mar 5, 2016 -> 03:04 PM) Funny: the Reds had a relief pitcher throw named Rookie Davis. I'm sure his parents weren't baseball fans at all. If they were true fans his name would have been Crash instead of Rookie. -
QUOTE (farmteam @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 09:07 PM) Wonder how far he'll fall now. Torn hamstring would mean he'd miss all of the 2016 season, right? Not necessarily. A tear in the midsubstance would take 12-14 weeks. If the tendon tore off the bone then it's a bigger issue.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 05:19 PM) They likely traded for him to play 3rd; then they work out a deal for Frazier. That trade, modest cost that it was, really was unnecessary once Frazier was here. (aside from obvious preference for veterans). Sox FO reacts with no real plan; they just aren't creative. I wanted to trade Eaton (to shore up 3rd or some other position) because I think we saw a career offensive year and his defense isn't good and the rest of our OF defense is bad. And we had a more than capable CF on the roster. Not creative? They upgraded half of the lineup without increasing the budget and not trading away any of their top prospects.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 11:57 AM) You are correct, in 2014 he was a gold glove finalist. UZR had him as a top 10 in the league defensive CF. In 2015 he was quite bad. Not terrible, but bad is an appropriate description - UZR had him as the 3rd worst qualifying CF in the big leagues. It certainly remains possible for him to return to his 2014 form. However, counting on that to rescue a defense that is generally terrible around him seems dicey, especially when he's already dealing with injury rehab. But we'll see. Maybe there's a coaching issue there somewhere? He was benched for a day last year while not listening to the coaches regarding positioning. His arm will be fine by the end of ST. It's a 3-4 month rehab and then building to playing strength.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 10:47 AM) however, Micah only played there for ~2 months. He can absolutely be a lot worse than Sanchez, and frankly he should be expected to be a defensive downgrade from Sanchez because Sanchez was really good. All second baseman will be worse this year with the replay for "the neighborhood tag" on the pivot for the DP. I think this will help the less mobile second basemen as it will make the more agile ones come closer to the bag.

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Feb 29, 2016 -> 12:52 PM) I hate myself for clicking on a link to watch Leury Garcia hit a single and Adam Eaton ground out. Winter needs to end. Why? It's baseball. Doesn't matter who's playing. Baseball is starting and it's a glorious thing.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Feb 28, 2016 -> 08:24 PM) A team that spent the majority of the season w Flowers, Sanchez, Saladino and Avi in your everyday lineup was a good team???? That is half of your lineup in the field. 3 of the 4 will not return to their position from last year and 90% of the fans want the 4th one replaced. Agreed that guys like LaRoche, Alexei and to some extent Melky did not perform but the rest of the lineup were not ML quality starting players. Yes. I believe most people thought it was a good team, at least above .500. Eventually, they have to play the young guys to see what they have. Avi had never played a full season, Sanchez and Saladino deserved a shot. Flowers was a good defensive catcher that the pitchers liked to throw to. If the rest of the team performed to their capabilities, they could have lived with flowers behind the plate. In hindsight, it wasn't. However, most of the problems you just mentioned were addressed this offseason. So now we see how they perform this year. Edit. Don't forget to add Smardija (sp) to your list. He was one people thought would help but tanked as well.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Feb 28, 2016 -> 07:12 PM) Where does the buck stop when evaluating the continued lack of results of this team? I think the changing philosophy the last two years is a big change. Besides what do you consider the lack of results? If it's not making the playoffs, nearly every ownership would change every 3 years. I think the change with Rick Hahn as the GM shifted the philosophy of the team and he needs some time to implement the change. Last year I thought he built a good team. The players didn't play to their capability. I also think that they have a pretty god team this year and are building in the right direction. I also agree with another poster that if they are under .500 this year there will be a manger change because they can't fire all of the players, although Hahn tried changing 1/2 of the lineup this year.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 28, 2016 -> 02:33 PM) Except it's a little bit late for that philosophy change after addressing quite a few of the issues on the major league roster...and also not having the position player depth (other than Anderson) to realistically fill those remaining holes over the next two seasons. At that time, we'll have to fill even more holes without buying free agents at the highest prices and/or running into budget limitations. It's not the Sox philosophy it was his comment about not having a good farm system. Personally, the ranking of the farm system is meaningless. A team needs to use the farm system to help the MLB club by either bringing up prospects or trading the prospects for MLB players. The rankings are based on overall talent and depth. I like what the sox dis this year. They traded mediocre players from a system that everyone here says is bad and picked up an all star. As long as they keep the possible impact players and obtain good players they will continually improve the team.

QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 28, 2016 -> 02:13 PM) yeah, as i said in another post or thread, i went thru 10 pages +/- to see who didn't like the signing of laroche. only 2 posters and those 2 were almost like prophetic in their reasoning's .. you do make a great point on last yr performance. but until then, the state of the system is where the point is, well my points. Yes but spending money on free agents and losing draft picks is one of the primary causes of the poor farm system. If you truly want a good farm system then you don't want them to sign free agents.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Feb 28, 2016 -> 01:13 PM) So the desire of a fan for his/her team to win is somehow "irrational"? Gotcha. Thanks for shedding some light on your position on the matter. Says it all right there! No but the constant bashing of the ownership and not the players is. You blast them for spending money on free agents (LaRoche/Cabrera) but want them to spend twice that amount on another one. Instead of blaming the onwership for spending money and not spending money at the same time you should throw a little blame at the players for not performing like they are capable of doing. I would guess most fans are frustrated with the team and their performance. However, I would also say I thought the team on paper looked pretty good last year with all of the additions. It was the players who did not perform to their capabilities last year.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Feb 27, 2016 -> 12:42 PM) You mean like the money we spent on LaRoche and Cabrera right now that could have been spent on one of the premium OFs in free agent this offseason? So you are totally confident that Cespedes will not have a bad year like Cabrera or LaRoche. At the time the Cabrera and LaRoche looked like prett good signings. There is no way to know which ones will be good and which ones will have bad years. They just need to go by the players track record and make an educated guess. I for one was not confident that Cepedes will have a consistenly good performance, he really hasn't shown it. You blast the team for spending money on free agent players then want them to spend more money on free agent players with worse track records. It really doens't make sense.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 04:53 PM) I'd still think he goes in the 2nd to 3rd round. Anything past that, I can't imagine he signs. That would be a real stretch unless he allows them extra testing. This is a big risk.

Teams cold do a nerve conduction velocity test to try to determine the extent of the injury and estimate how much damage there is and the possibility of how much function will return. This will be a really interesting case.
-
QUOTE (shipps @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 04:50 PM) So is Smith like a 4th rounder now? Only if he wants to take the deal. Can't he just not sign and go back into the draft next year?
-
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 04:38 PM) @RapSheet Difficult day for #NotreDame LB Jaylon Smith, who had his medicals. Ankle & knee nerve issues, teams believe he's out for 2016 -- at least Sounds like Smith was just hoping for the best. Sucks, he was going to be a really good player. Yeah, must be the peroneal nerve that wraps around the fibula near the area he had the lateral knee damage. Would be really interesting to see where it was at the time of injury and where it is now. There is a good chance it will heal to a good extent. Nerves heal for about 18 months. Might be worth a mid-round pick to try to get him this year, if he will take the deal.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 03:49 PM) Doesn't mean he isn't pitching in B games or to our minor leaguers. Yes. He will be throwing getting the arm in shape with less stress. They probably want to get Johnson, Latos and Danks into a competition against teams.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Feb 25, 2016 -> 09:34 PM) His combine physical is tomorrow, so hopefully we get more information tomorrow or soon there after. Im surprised he is agreeing to a physical there. I would've thought they postpone it to later.
