QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 2, 2011 -> 07:29 PM) I dont think it would to be honest. People would still love him. In Chicago? I agree. Nationwide? I think he'd be looked at a lot differently. By the way, everytime Jim Tressel has come up recently, I couldn't help but think of this: -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 2, 2011 -> 09:54 AM) And then being the #1 pick in the NBA draft... Haha this is a CLASSIC example of what I was talking about. Derrick Rose cheated on his SAT, yet nobody says a word. Had he received some cash or a car, the perception of him would be completely different. -

QUOTE (fathom @ May 22, 2011 -> 08:18 PM) I think anyone associated with NIU is shocked it took Wolfe this long to get in trouble when he went to the NFL. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/break...0,2495439.story I know I'm late with this response, but Wolfe did a great job faking it at NIU for the most part. He is a well spoken guy, and represented the school well when he talked anyways. In that sense, just NIU alums and fans on the outside were shocked by this story. But, anybody with behind the scenes knowledge had heard many stories about him. I remember his sophomore year, he missed the biggest game of the year because of an eye injury sustained in a barfight. It was played off as him getting hurt being a peacemaker, but anybody with half a brain knows that's BS. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 1, 2011 -> 03:25 PM) I truly think most people would be stunned at how athletes on a college campus behave, and the illegal stuff they get away with. I'm not even talking about improper financial benefits. Academic fraud is even a bigger issue, in my opinion. This is completely true, and kind of sad. Academic fraud is even more widespread than illegal financial benefits in my opinion, yet people seem to find it far worse if a poor kid on scholarship gets some extra money for food than for a kid to cheat in order to pass classes. -
QUOTE (The Critic @ Jun 2, 2011 -> 07:57 AM) No, he SLAYED THE DRAGON this year, remember??? Haha yeah, exactly. Vancouver is so lucky that the Hawks had the Cup hangover, Bolland was out early in the series against them, etc. And even then, they needed overtime of game 7. I can't wait to see the Hawks beat those assholes in the playoffs next year and rightly move Vancouver back to b**** status. I'm not saying the Hawks will win the Cup next year, but they won't lose to them.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/foo...p;dlvrit=206567 Terrelle Pryor is driving on a suspended license. This guy is among the dumbest college athletes I've ever seen, and that's really saying something. -
I still think the guy who is 0-8 with an ERA over 5, and who the team is 1-10 in games he starts overall, should move to the bullpen. But, I like Jackson's team first attitude.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 30, 2011 -> 07:17 PM) Rumor has it Pryor is done at OSU, so probably. I don't see how he plays again. There also could be more players (quite a few more) suspended next year if we find out all of the names of active players trading memorabilia for tats. I wouldn't be surprised if several players try to get into the supplmental draft that it's been confirmed will happen, and that list starts with Pryor. In my opinion, Pryor is going to be an absolutely hated man in Columbus from now on. Obviously he was the MVP of two different BCS games and won a ton of games, but the only memories of him will be no national titles, being amazingly stupid, and playing a huge role in getting Tressel run out of town. Even though he's far from the only guy who received things he shouldn't have, Pryor will be looked at as the guy who lead to Tressel's downfall. In fact, that narrative is already playing out in many corners of the media. Lastly, in regards to Tressel, I really don't think he's scum or a bad guy. No matter how much more we find out, what has happened at Ohio State isn't a lot different than other schools, except they did a terrible job of keeping it quiet. My issue with Tressel is he pretended to be different, and to have moral authority, when really he's no different than every other coach in the sense than he just ignored a lot of things going on behind the scenes. -
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 31, 2011 -> 07:11 PM) That is one of the silliest things I have ever read. The city that players play isn't even decided by them a a majority of the time, and most teams in America are comprised of Canadian players. Both sides of this argument are hilariously stupid. Either way, I'm rooting for Boston because they're Original 6 and I absolutely despise anything and everything that has to do with the Canucks. Well obviously, I know that. Buff and Kane were the only active American players on the Hawks for game 6 last year as an example. Your first bolded statement is true sportswide as well, outside of some exceptions like Derrick Rose. But no matter how stupid or silly you think it is, the fact is that many fans in Canada are upset that the Cup hasn't been with a Canadian team in so long. And I find it rather hilarious, and hope it continues.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 29, 2011 -> 09:21 PM) I challenge you to watch any other game and not point out five to 10 glaring errors by the manager of the losing team. Managers who manage good players win; managers who manage bad and/or/ lazy players lose. There are the rare buffoons like Bevington. I watch lots of other games. All the time. You're right that almost all managers make mistakes. But VERY few make particularly elementary mistakes like Ozzie does on a daily basis.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 30, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) Its like you know that something bad happened, and has been happening for a while(Maurice Clarett, cough cough), but you are such a homer that you cant admit it even when you plainly state that the s*** is about to hit the fan. Just read through some of this http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/tag/ohio_state_buckeyes This stuff has been happening for a while The cheating isn't Ohio State's big problem here. All of the elite programs, and many of the not elite programs, do it. Their problem is they didn't cover their tracks well, and then had lying/cover up issues once the poor track covering arrived in Jim Tressel's inbox. -

I wonder if Jim Tressel regrets the day he signed Terrelle Pryor. Obviously, lying/covering up is what cost Tressel his job. This stuff also obviously started before Pryor arrived, but I think a lot of things would have gone differently and been handled differently were that kid not in the program. It was obvious from day 1 he's pretty dumb, and it played a big role in all of this. -
QUOTE (zenryan @ May 30, 2011 -> 11:38 AM) Virginia,UNC,FSU,South Carolina and Texas look to have an easy path to the Super Regionals. That Virginia team is unbelieveable. The fact that UNC swept them recently makes me think awfully highly of them too. National seeds rarely win this tournament though.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 30, 2011 -> 09:12 AM) Some hate those players, but in the end, all Tress had to do was walk down the hall to the compliance office. The coverup was much worse than the crime. And OSU is still one of the top openings in all of football and the best in the Big Ten. Regardless of any sanctions depending on whether the school gets dinged, they will have a good hire. Completely agree on the bolded. And really, Ohio State is going to get a very good coach regardless of what happens. I just think the sanctions could make the difference between if they'll get a very good coach or a great coach. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 30, 2011 -> 05:40 AM) No, stars are allowed 4 steps and superstars are allowed 5. That's a perfectly legal play. The officials are such a joke. The league really needs to just get rid of them and start over, because as long as the current batch is there, the aura of fix, cheating, and ineptitude will always be there. Although, I really think that'll be the case until David Stern is gone as commish too. He's the one that oversees these refs, and the fixed draft lotteries.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 30, 2011 -> 08:17 AM) Good edit. You hate OSU because you are a Big Ten fan, SEC fans probably wouldnt put the Buckeyes in their top 3 most hated teams and that goes for most every conference. It's a very attractive job, they'll land someone that will probably rub you the wrong way as well. Who they land will depend on how bad the final sanctions placed on the program are IMO. If the sanctions are reasonable, and he's interesting in coaching again, obviously Urban Meyer will be far and away the guy. But, there's a lot to play out still with all of this. Obviously, this step had to happen. I really wonder if the athletic director Gene Smith should also lose his job, as all of this happened under his watch. Also, my first reaction was this is Ohio State trying to sneak one past the goalie since it's Memorial Day, but apparently Sports Illustrated is putting up a story on their website later today, and I saw a tweet from one of their writers saying something to the point of the timing of this will make sense after that story is released. So my guess would be that story is the reason it happened today. I'm curious to see how Ohio State fans respond to those five players that got this snowball started and led to today, particularly Pryor. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 29, 2011 -> 07:43 PM) I don't know why you think he's a horrible manager. He's definitely OK in that regard. WHo cares if he runs his mouth? It's Ozzie being Ozzie.I thought Chicago was a rough town, not a town full of people who get their feelings hurt by the big, bad manager. Because I watch the games. Nobody can watch the games and say Ozzie Guillen isn't a bad manager, unless they aren't watching very closely.
-
QUOTE (T R U @ May 29, 2011 -> 01:45 AM) Ozzie Guillen has averaged 86 wins a season, and has a world series title under his command of the White Sox.. I like how your selected numbers make him and KW out to be garbage.. KW will have missed the playoffs 9 times out of 11 after this year, and Ozzie will have 6 times out of 8. The last six years (including this year), we've had the most financial resources in this division. And throughout those 11 years, this division has been mediocre the majority of the time. To me, those numbers aren't good enough. Has this franchise been respectable? Yes. But, teams spending as much money as we are should be more than that. No doubt about it.
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 29, 2011 -> 05:44 PM) b.) Wow. You HATE Ozzie Guillen? How can you hate Ozzie Guillen? Because he's a horrible manager who never shuts up and has a massively overinflated ego?

QUOTE (dielac @ May 28, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) Wow, wasn't expecting to see FOX televising the Uefa champions league final. They have an hour pregame show too. Even playing the FOX football sunday music. Strange but it looks good. Going to be a great final! Fox actually had the game last year too, although I believe that was the first time they had it. Barcelona was just scary today, the score really doesn't indicate the level of domination. Even with Rooney scoring that nice goal to get the game to halftime even, it didn't feel like Manchester United had much of a shot. I understand this isn't the best Manchester United squad ever (and it wasn't the best Premier League ever this year either), but they still won their semifinal 6-1 aggregate and their league by 9 points. Yet, Barcelona appeared to be toying with them for large parts of the game today. As outstanding as Real Madrid also is, I'm rather amazed they managed to beat Barca in the Copa del Rey Final.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ May 28, 2011 -> 05:37 PM) Not sure why all the Boston hate and putting them on Vancouver's level. I know we hate the Red Sox and their fans, but this is hockey...there's no "Bruins nation" BS...not a lot of irritating players at all...original 6 team as well...much easier pick than Vancouver. Boston fans are assholes regardless of sport. I don't put them on Vancouver's level, but I still hate every team from there. Even if this was Calgary against Boston though, I'd still root for the Bruins, even with them being a Boston team. I will ALWAYS root against the Canadian team in the Final if they are there and playing an American team. The people up there thing it's some sort of right for a Canadian team to have the Cup, and I find it delicious it hasn't been there in so long. Hopefully, it stays that way.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 28, 2011 -> 04:32 PM) I rarely chime in on threads like this because most of the time they strike me as reactionary. However, I have to admit, this coaching staff, with the possible exception of Don Cooper, seems incapable of maximizing the resources Kenny provides them with in a race against other competitors much shorter on those same resources. Ozzie, I love ya man, but you're not getting it done anymore. Promote Cooper to interim manager. Letting Dunn hit today in extra innings with 1st and 3rd with Q available on the bench (that flyout he hit with 2 outs would have been nice with 1 out) and pinch hitting with Dunn earlier in the week down 1 with a man on 3rd, 1 out in the 8th when he knew a lefty was available for Texas were just two examples of Ozzie being Ozzie. His complete lack of ability to manage has made the biggest at-bat of the game a GUARANTEED (0-36=guaranteed) failure before it ever happened twice in four games, and was one of the biggest reasons both ended up losses. That is beyond elementary, yet Ozzie fails with such decisions pretty frequently. People like that should not be allowed to keep their jobs.

QUOTE (knightni @ May 28, 2011 -> 07:22 PM) The truth is, EVERY TEAM will lose at minimum more than 1/3 of its games every year. b****ing every day that the team loses is pointless. It doesn't serve any benefit. The team doesn't improve, and it just makes the people who complain regularily seem annoying and a real drag to be around to the average poster. I know this post isn't directed at me since I have barely posted this season, but I'll defend whoever it is directed at. What else are they supposed to do? A team that is "all in" and spent a ton of money has been a miserable failure, and shows no sign of coming out of it. This management team also has no track record of coming from behind to make the playoffs ('05 jumped way ahead, '08 was neck and neck), and that's especially depresing when you consider this team started with a record that only 3 have ever recovered from to make the playoffs. What response other than b****ing do you expect? -

QUOTE (danman31 @ May 22, 2011 -> 05:51 PM) Northern Illinois got Niles North star Abdel Nader to commit. I saw Nader play a few times and even talked to him once. He's a tall and extremely athletic player that looked like Lebron in the NBA against these high schoolers. He was bigger, stronger, faster and could jump higher. He's not going to dominate as a freshman, but he took Niles North to a sectional final. I think that says enough about how big of a coup this guy is for NIU. Coach Montgomery is doing some really good things in recruiting. We'll see how it translates on the floor. Nader sounds like a bit of a risk, but for a program in the position NIU has been for a long time, the risk is more than worth it for a talent like Nader. The word I have is he will qualify. Among others, Dre Henley from De La Salle also signed this spring, and I've heard a lot of good things about him.
