QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2011 -> 08:16 PM) Hes the #1 terrorist because of the US. Look at the kill totals, Bin Laden is small time. Even Saddam has way more kills than Bin Laden. Who cares if the US govt ranks him 1 or a million, I care about death totals. The reason he was #1, is because he actually had the audacity to take on the crown. I understand what the US did, we made an example of him. You kill one of ours, we kill ten of yours. I get this mentality more than I care to admit, but now that we have him, we need to put him in his real historical context, a lucky b****. With all of his money, with all of his access this was all he could achieve. Hes a failure, unless we make him out to be "THE GREATEST TERRORIST TO EVER LIVE" This post is so wrong that I don't even know how to respond to it..

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 2, 2011 -> 08:12 PM) I just dont agree with being proud for killing a man, it makes him a myth, it makes him a legend, it puts him in a historical context that he does not deserve. He is no myth, he is no legend, he is just a man, and I dont celebrate the death of men. The celebrations after his death do not change what Osama Bin Laden was, for better or worse.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 2, 2011 -> 08:01 PM) I don't think I really have. The MLK quote is clearly a moral argument. Even as somebody that was very happy with Bin Laden dying, I admit that it's morally wrong for me to feel that way. But I openly admit I'm not perfect, and in this case had a thirst for revenge.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 2, 2011 -> 03:05 PM) I'm not trying to bring anyone down. I just don't think it should be ignored. You don't think college kids being idiots should be ignored? Because I do, regardless of the reason for which they are doing it.

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Apr 30, 2011 -> 09:07 PM) You guys really think the Thunder will have that much trouble with Memphis? I just don't see it. I don't. The Grizzlies beat the Spurs due to athletic ability, and that advantage needless to say won't be there this round. My picks: OKC in 5 (Can the NBA install reseeding for the playoffs starting next year please?) Lakers in 6 (Shouldn't even take them that long, but they'll dick around and make it interesting in similar fashion to round 1.) Bulls in 5 (I'm still a major Bulls skeptic, as much as I love them, after last round. But the Hawks are an ideal matchup for the Bulls.) Heat in 7 (The only series I could really see going either way. Give the Heat a coin flip edge due to homecourt, lack of Perkins.)

Loved the Bears first two picks, hated the others. The team obviously still has more than its fair share of holes, and who knows when they'll get the chance to fill them with this blasted lockout. Going to be tough sledding next year with Green Bay, the Lions improved, and a much tougher schedule. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 1, 2011 -> 01:07 AM) This is a good post. I understand what you are saying. It truly is painful to watch simply because it's the same thing every f***ing night, except for two nights in New York and the offense was putrid in both the victories there as well. If the Sox were winning once in a while, it'd be watchable, but right now it truly is torture. Can you imagine trying to sell tickets when your most loyal fans simply can't bring themselves to watch this trainwreck? If the Sox get swept by Baltimore, somebody has to be fired. This is just too much. It'd be different if the team hasn't been so rocky for three seasons now. I've been watching a lot and I can't believe how bad a hitter Adam Dunn is and how sick it is to see highly paid ballplayers hit pop up after pop up and weak grounder after weak grounder. Did you see the stat the Sox are hitting something like .210 the last 14 games or something wild like that?? Yeah, the offense has just been lost basically since the Oakland series ended. It is a long season, so any firesale should wait until July IMO. But make no mistake, if this team is out of it in July, the firesale is probably coming. Which leaves us with another dilemma: does anybody want Kenny Williams orchestrating a fire sale? I sure as hell don't, I'm not even sure KW would know how to do such a thing. As for firing Ozzie, as much as I've been calling for his head for a long time, I generally don't think firing a manager during the season does a lot. It's usually good for nothing more than a modest dead cat bounce, and the cases where it's worth more are generally limited to teams out of it at the end of the season (like the Cubs and Baltimore last year). But desperate times call for desperate measures, and they don't get much more desperate than a team "all in" with a record payroll being among the worst in baseball.

Mediocre everything is the worst scenario, and it's not even close. Attendance will suck with .500 ish records, and mediocre salary means not spending enough to fix our mediocre system, which won't yield enough to win. Mediocre everything is a hopeless position that almost assures long term failure. Spending a lot with pretty good teams and crappy minors sucks too since you'll always have older teams with no plan b if injuries occur or veterans struggle, and "pretty good" far from guarantees playoff spots (especially if you hit a long term drought at any point during the season), but there is at least hope to catch lightning in a bottle every so often built that way. Dump salary, lose a bunch, build up the minors makes it 3 for 3 in the sucks category since "the 5 year plan" is no fun during those 5 years. But at least it's a plan, something this team doesn't seem to have right now.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Apr 30, 2011 -> 11:21 AM) I wonder how many people still watch all of the games. I'm considered one of the biggest pessimists on this site, but I still watch every single game. It seems that a lot of people can't say that. I haven't even been watching the games. I watched them all for the first two months last year, hell I watched them all in 2007, so I know bad stretches when I see them. But this year is just particularly unwatchable IMO. The "all in" campaign that now looks like a complete joke, the early losses due to dropped fly balls, bad bullpen work, and bad defense, and the shellshock this team (particularly the offense) has been in since those horrible early losses. All of it combined just makes this team impossible to watch for me, and this is the first time I can say that in all of my time as a fan. I pay attention to the box score, results, and our record and standings place every day because I'm no bandwagon fan. But these games are too pathetic and painful to watch. People can keep saying it's just April (May now), but facts are that our start cost us a playoff spot last year, and the odds of a 25-5 run again are VERY low. A mere 3 game winning streak seems impossible right now. This team at current pace will surpass the 2001 team for the most disappointing in my time as a White Sox fan.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 30, 2011 -> 09:07 PM) He's not the one up there hitting poorly, or pitching poorly, or dropping the ball in the outfield, or walking runners in, or unable to smother breaking balls in the dirt, or failing to get runners in from 3rd with less than two outs. By this logic, the manager should NEVER be fired! You cannot fire the players, Kenny isn't going anywhere until after the season (as much as I'd love for him to be fired too) and you also cannot just sit there as the "all in" season burns to the ground long before Memorial Day. Somebody is going to take the fall if this doesn't turn around fast, and the only way it'll get the players attention at all is if it's Ozzie. Do I think it'll make a difference? Probably not. I think the end game here is a new manager and Rick Hahn as the GM on opening day of 2012. But, the team can't just give up like I already have.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 29, 2011 -> 12:42 PM) First, many homes in the south don't have basements. Second, have you seen the pictures of the damage? I'm amazed the toll isn't higher. Oh it is probably going to be higher unfortunately, I read today hundreds are still listed as missing in Tuscaloosa alone. This might be the worst tornado outbreak in recorded history, but I'm still surprised that any outbreak could happen in America today and kill several hundred people, even one this bad. I guess it's just the combination of lack of basements, volume of tornadoes, and number of tornadoes hitting major metro areas. Almost everytime I see tornado outbreaks/damage I am amazed the death toll isn't higher, but in this case I find it hard to believe this many will perish. It's an impossible to fathom tragedy, and I hope if at all possible more homes in the south will be built with basements/storm cellars from now on.

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Apr 29, 2011 -> 08:17 PM) grow up. Why? He's right. Odds are, the kid will just be a special teams player. Mayock liked him though, and he's a decent talent evaluator, so I guess the kid has a shot to be something. -
As all-time bad as the tornado outbreak in the south was, and as much as I expected many fatalities with several tornadoes hitting metro areas, I'm a little surprised the number is up to 300 now. Are there just not many basements/storm cellars in the south?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 28, 2011 -> 10:48 AM) What the hell does Cam Newton have that Tebow didnt have? They both have terrible mechanics, havent operated in a pro-style offense and were running QB's. Newton wasnt even as good as Tebow. Mostly agreed. I think the one difference is Newton has a way, way stronger arm than Tebow. And scouts are probably falling in love with that. But his accuracy is erratic, he played 1 year at the top level of college, and we have no idea if he can run a pro offense. Has disaster written all over him. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2011 -> 10:19 AM) This one's already up there with the Palm Sunday Outbreak, and could easily surpass it (that one killed 271). Yeah, we're up into the 200's now and I think that 271 number will end up being surpassed. It's scary to think how many people would have died in this without modern technology and advanced warning via many avenues. In terms of just the raw number of tornadoes, it looks very possible that yesterday will surpass the all time 24 hour record set during the 1974 super outbreak. The number of reported tornadoes is comfortably above the Super Outbreak number last I looked. I can't ever remember seeing a death toll for an outbreak anywhere near this in my lifetime.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 26, 2011 -> 03:49 PM) Oh my God, can we please beat the f*** out of these idiots' team tonight? http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Send+Can...4012/story.html Amen. I hope they have cops at every bridge, tall building, and gathering place tonight just in case. Because, if the Canucks lose, i could seriously see some rioting occurring.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 26, 2011 -> 03:17 PM) Its crazy that both teams that were in the SCF last year are playing game sevens in the first round. It's even crazier when you consider both teams were one bad bounce away from being out in 6.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 23, 2011 -> 07:34 PM) I dont think the Heat and Celtics bench could bring the same defensive attention that the Pacers have brought so far. I can give credit where credit is due, Vogel has them playing extremely hard and scrappy, they arent going to win this series but they have won some respect Why not? They're much better defensive teams than Indiana, and have much better players than Indiana. And it's not like Indiana is playing harder than they would, this is the playoffs and everybody plays hard.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 23, 2011 -> 06:48 PM) Neither Boston nor Miami plays defense anything like Indiana does. exactly. Celtics were the only team to give up fewer points than the Bulls, with the Heat 6th. Indiana was 17th.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 23, 2011 -> 06:37 PM) Or this series can be used as a learning experience. I doubt the Bulls will continue to shoot so poorly and maybe they can figure something out with the way Indiana is playing them because everyone will play them that way and will only be better. I truly believe this is good experience for the Bulls. They will be confident if they don't play their best they will still be in the game but not. cocky. You have to know how to win close games. I don't doubt it. At all. They weren't a very good offensive team this season as it is, and now Rose is getting even more attention, with teams playing even harder on defense since it's the playoffs. For this offense to even have a chance at being average in the playoff setting, Deng has to be outstanding, Boozer (who is still hurt IMO) has to remember how to jump again so he can finish plays, and Kyle Korver has to play big minutes and be hot shooting.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Apr 23, 2011 -> 09:41 AM) The Sox are only in it every year because they have the most resources in the division (their payroll). It really has nothing to do with KW; it's actually the opposite. KW is the reason we have this ceiling where we are in it almost every year, but not winning it. For all the good trades KW has made, he and this organization has drafted horrendously and developed players horrifically. The Sox will never be a consistent winner with KW because the Sox don't draft and develop. Unless you can spend like the Yankees and Red Sox, you need to draft and develop well. And actually the Sawks and Yankees do draft and develop well. It's also boggles my mind that the Sox are willing to spend so much on payroll yet they consistently neglect spending on foreign free agents and the draft. Glad to see there are others who understand this. I'd also like one person to point out how the reaction of the fanbase to this start has been overly negative. It's been negative because the team is playing like s***, and there is no other way to react to that.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 21, 2011 -> 06:41 AM) Develop and keep young players? Like Gavin Floyd, John Danks, Chris Sale, Matt Thornton, Bobby Jenks, Alexei Ramirez, Carlos Quentin? The only player on that list we actually drafted and developed is Chris Sale, a can't miss that any idiot could turn into a good player. I appreciate the effort, though. I feel like I'm going to point this out in a ton of threads as well, but April and May games count. In fact, our performance in them was probably the #1 reason we missed the playoffs last year. -
I am SO amused by the people who say "it's only April" when, if we're being honest, the reason we missed the playoffs last year is the hole we dug in April and May was so big that extended periods of hot play afterwards weren't enough to overcome it. However, I hope this thread (or anything) can remove the "hex" on our team right now.
