QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Apr 2, 2006 -> 06:16 PM) I am so gald Crisp is gone, but Michaels is a feisty little hitter. agreed

michaels is a nice player... not a complete replacement for crisp, but the indians were wise to acquire him

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 02:08 PM) Mike Remlinger is still alive? Remlinger used to be one of the leaguest pre-eminent closers... a stud. Then he gave up a walk-off home run to crappy chad curtis in a world series game... pretty much since then, he's basically been as good as dead.

Carlos Lee To Cubs Deal Imminent?????

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 02:14 PM) He was going for a reaction akin to if I had posted that the Sox traded McCarthy, Anderson, and Sweeney for Torri Hunter. Bingo... thats exactly correct. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Apr 1, 2006 -> 02:16 PM) The only premise that doesn't make sense is the Brewers trading away one of their biggest draws to a rival that finished behind them last year. Have you ever been up to Miller park? There are no "biggest draws." When bonds was at 699 homers, I bought tickets in the right field bleachers the day before the game like 9 rows up. Its milwaukee, their best draws are the days the cubs and twins come to town. -
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2391815 hmmm... that seems pretty cheap actually. 10 million less than konerko. ... then again, Ortiz might only be a few pounds away from eating himself into Mo Vaugn-esqe condition.

Carlos Lee To Cubs Deal Imminent?????
AbeFroman replied to South Side Fireworks Man's topic in The Diamond Club
Is there any page less reliable than mlbtraderumors.com? I'm more apt to believe the National Inquirer.... Murton, Rich Hill, and Guzman? Thats three of their top five prospects right there. No way would the Cubs agree to this. I hope its true, cause the cubs would be paying an absurd price. However, I doubt it is even close -
i say lock him up and throw away the key.
-
why would he agree to a six year deal? that seems absurdly long for a player who could very well have broken the bank at the end of this season for even a four year deal...
-
I'd consider helicopter transportation...

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 27, 2006 -> 04:27 PM) I really dread the game threads this year. I thought people would be a little more mellow and cool with the WS win. THis spring has showed that it won't. Relax, it is no different than it was last year -
QUOTE(CWSOX45 @ Mar 27, 2006 -> 12:27 PM) in my draft this year I relied heavily on pitching, after drafting Johan, Rich Harden, Zach Duke, Francisco Liriano, Jarrod Washburn, Javy Vazquez and Shawn Chacon I have plenty of starting pitchers. I made an offer of Zach Duke to a guy for Joe Blanton and Hideki Matsui, he declined and insisted on me either giving up Hermida or Ryan Zimmerman. This deal is a no brainer and I'm going to do it, but I don't know which player to give up. I really like both of them, I'm leaning towards Hermida right now because I hear Zimmerman could be this years version of David Wright. So who do i cut loose? Zimmerman or Hermida? I would lean strongly towards trading zimmerman. Hermida could be a 25-25 guy this year. For what its worth, I've seen Hermida go as high as the 10th round in mock drafts. Both players play in "pitcher's" parks, so that is largely irrelevant. For me, the issue with Zimmerman is that he plays third base... Third base is so deep this year, zimmerman is comparatively less valuable than the average third basemen in the league. Zimmerman would have to have a totally absurd year just to finish in the top five of third basemen.... Not too likely for a rookie. He may be a great rookie: say he bats 290 and hits 23 homers. Thats still probably not as good as arod, wright, chavez, cabrera, a healthy rolen, chipper, glaus, aramis, or hank blalock. Hermida plays the outfield. If Hermida plays to ordinary expectations, he can surely be a productive player in any fantasy outfield. Hermida is every bit as capable as Zimmerman of batting 290 with 23 homers (and a bunch of steals). At the outfield position, thats a decent third outfielder. Also, ESPN has Hermida as the number 32 outfielder... and Zimmerman as the number 27 thirdbasemen. Even though ESPN has a tendency to over-rate prospects like Hermida, I'd still keep the outfielder over the thirdbasemen

The epic battle of good vs. evil continues -
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 01:27 PM) Thanks, Sausage King. That's pretty much what I'm thinking. I like Mora mora and mora the mora I think about it, although I wasn't too happy when I made the pick. Still, he's a little older, a little up-and-down (his season averages have been between .230 and .340 -- that's amazing unpredictability), and Ramirez is in the prime of his career. But you're right, it's a small improvement. Actually I was thinking of trying to land Sheets. Though I'm a little worried about injuries now. nice catch on my name... i'm a big ferris bueller fan. Thats just one man's opinion. I don't profess to be a fantasy baseball guru. But this is my sixth season, and I spend a borderline sad amount of time getting ready for the fantasy baseball season

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 25, 2006 -> 11:10 AM) So there's a guy in one league I'm in who really wants Pujols (or says he does -- getting ahead). I have Pujols, and he proposes a ridiculous offer (Tejada, Giambi, and HERMANSON -- yeah, that was a laugh -- for Pujols and Francisco Cordero). So the general question is, how do you value the top top players? (ARod, Pujols, Teixeira.) What's a fair price? I don't mind trading Pujols. Trades make fantasy more fun, and I don't want it to become a dead league. If he is just in love w/ AP, that's fine. But I don't want to get screwed either. And I don't think the guy has much that could help me. Mine / His C J. López / IRod 1B A. Pujols / Giambi 2B C. Utley / Vidro 3B M. Mora / Ramirez SS J. Reyes / Tejada OF A. Huff / Griffey OF J. Francoeur / Burnitz OF B. Wilkerson / Swisher Util L. Castillo / Jeter BN J. Morneau / Nomar BN R. Freel / Polanco BN R. Baldelli / Kendall BN I. Kinsler / R. Sanders SP R. Harden / Mulder SP C. Zambrano / Maddux RP B. Ryan / Lidge RP H. Street / KRod P F. Cordero / Guardado P M. González / Hoffman P C. Orvella / Hermanson BN P. Maholm / Morris I mean, I have definite weaknesses (of, sp, maybe 3b). But I don't see how a trade could work. So 2 questions: In general, how do you value the very best players? And is there any way I could get value for Pujols here? Question 1: I tend to believe that the players at the top (arod, puhols, vlad) are somewhat overrated.... If you crunch the numbers on ESPN documented trades, you'll find that often people tend to overpay for these premier players. If you have depth at a position, (say you had Konerko) you could probably rake it in for Pujols. Question 2: I understand that you are willing to trade Pujols... but looking at the two teams here, I would rule out a trade with this guy involving pujols. Virtually none of his players are so substantially better than yours as to warrant a deal. Melvin Mora is not a weak spot. Mora's been pretty damn good over the past few years... and he's fairly reliable. Say Aramis hits 34 hrs this year... I still bet Mora hits 27, steals ten bags, scores more, and hits for a higher average. Your opponents team sucks. Look to deal with someone who has depth at OF or SP and could give you a reasonable replacement 1b ranked somewhere between 8 and 15 among 1b (e.g. delgado, konerko, berkman, helton, etc.). If someone in the league has a little depth, and is maybe looking to trade away from injury possibilities (for the reliable pujols) you could get some pretty good value for him. I say a Ben Sheets type Pitcher and a Paul Konerko type firstbaseman is probably a high, yet realistic type deal for pujols

Greatest College Basketball Team Ever?

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Mar 24, 2006 -> 11:29 AM) 1997-98 UNC team should be in the talks. 34-4 with a final four appearance. PG. Ed Cota(3rd in NCAA history in assists) SG. Shammond Williams(solid NBA career) SF. Vince Carter PF. Antawn Jamison C. Maktar Ndiaye Bench. Brendan Haywood Ademola Okulaja(very solid foreign career) Brian Bersticker Max Owens Two NBA stars, two pretty decent NBA players, and 3 other guys(Cota, Okulaja, Ndiaye) who have spent time in NBA camps and have had great overseas careers. Ed Cota was a helluva basketball player. I think he went to 3 final fours in four years. Maktar Ndiaye was the weak link in that team... I remember a few years ago, he was the focus of that ESPN show on the D-league low-gaters. He was getting schooled even at that level... poor maktar Bill Gutheridge is on my list of all time underrated coaches. His worst record ever at UNC was 24-10 and he took 2 of 3 teams to the final four. Still, they pretty much ran him out of town to hire Matt Doughetry (who also got ran out of town for not living up to the Dean Smith Legacy. -

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Mar 23, 2006 -> 12:06 AM) Some other teams that were good that lost were 1991 UNLV, the 83 and 84 Tar Heels, 87 Syracuse, 68 Houston, and the 89 Flying Illini (maybe not great historically, but they were probably the best team in the country, and won 2 out of 3 against National Champ Michigan). How could I forget the 91 UNLV team?! Thats the winner right there. In fact, thats probably a better team than 95% of the actual NCAA Championship winners. Also, I'm not sure that the cinci team with K-Mart counts.... since Martin got hurt in the C-USA tournament.... If he had been healthy, they would have clobbered everyone IMO. -
anyone have any reports on Honel? I'm interested to hear how he is doing...

I'd say indiana in 76... If Jimmy V doesn't pull off a miracle in the championship, it would probably be the houston phi slamma jamma team. Other teams that jump to mind, any of the late 60's UCLA teams or the 82 jordan/worthy UNC team. Best teams never to win the championship actually a little more fun: Think Houston (above), the Kenyon Martin Cincinatti team, and of course the fab five at michigan
