He had one really good year, a couple good years, and the rest of the time (nearly half his career) he was around 2 WAR. He was a solid regular that had a couple All-Star level years. Sox need more than that from Eloy.

Carlos Lee? He of a 112 career wRC and whose single season highest ISO was .255? Who was one of the worst defenders in baseball for a decade and finished with 28 fWAR (best season 5.5)? If that's all Eloy turns into then fuck. Sox need Eloy to be a superstar. A guy that is routinely putting up a wRC+ between 130-160 and who can defend his position enough to get to 5-8 WAR on a yearly basis. If he's not, the rebuild takes a step back.

9.8% K rate in AAA, that is absurd for a guy with an ISO over 300. We are really looking at a Manny type hitter.

Personally I feel this is a clear case of being pound foolish and penny smart. I HEAVILY discount any future event that is 7 year out. In 7 fucking years ALOT can happen. So much in fact that trying to predict is pointless. This is basic Nassim Taleb thinking, everybody should read his books.

Ideally a guy who covers baseball would know the rules and how it pertains to his hometown team. This guy has more value than anybody they were going to sign for 300k or less.

How about putting pitchers in to play 3B? Only going to see more and more stuff like this until they expand the active roster to 26, which will almost certainly happen next CBA negotiation.

I am a huge fan of "Bayesian" style induction. You make some good guesses, run some tests, and re-evaluate. Scouting gives MLB teams some "good guesses" about how to judge a player and analytics can refine those guesses.

I gotta say watching Rodon pitch the other night with his jersey hanging off his chest and that little cocky smirk he had on his face made me proud to be a Sox fan and we haven't had many of those moments lately. He's totally the sort of guy that moves the needle in a playoff game and it would be nice to see him start one.

I'd offer Carlos 4 years 75 million with big team options (25,25?) at the end to get it done. I think it's a risk worth taking. Of course it doesn't really make much sense to do that right now. Be much smarter to wait until next offseason and see how close the Sox are to contending. If the club wins 80 games next year and Rodon gives the Sox about 180 innings with solid peripherals I'd "overpay" to keep him.

Yea I'm the same. I don't think you can really evaluate a guy until he's got about 1000 PA under his belt at the MLB level, maybe even more. A great example of this is that ZIPS actually sees a 103 wRC+ for Moncada ROS and a 104 wRC+ for Ozzie Albies. The projection systems certainly don't believe that Albies is really a 135 wRC+ type -- not yet anyways.

I don't have a horse in this race but Eloy has slashed something like 300/360/580 since he came over from the Cubs in the high minors. That pretty much cemented him as a top 5 guy. Before he came over he wasn't tearing it up like that and he was more seen as a 5-15 guy.
