  1. QUOTE (LDF @ Mar 25, 2015 -> 04:08 PM) again, where is the margin list of profits. let me understand this, r u saying only 26 mil was the tv money?? $25 million-ish should be "new TV money". Fox TV signed a new contract with MLB that started in 2014. Every team in MLB should have gotten $25 million in "new money" compared to 2013 from that new TV contract on top of what they got beforehand. That's on top of the TV money they already had. That money is already balanced into the revenue and expense streams. In fact, the new FOX TV money probably just offset some of the losses from advertisers leaving a team that had been a loser 2 years in a row.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 25, 2015 -> 03:36 PM) He's in the same boat Rodon is in. Send him down for 2 weeks, you get him for 7 seasons. I will agree with Boras that if the Cubs are trying to win, baseball will be broken if they keep him in Des Moines until he won't be a Super 2. Boras exploits every loophole he can. He should be very understanding the other side does as well. If he ran a team, he would do the same thing. Boras understands it so well he understands it better than you. He understands that b***ing publicly gets attention and helps make that change a priority for the union in the future. He will then understand that the next loophole available will be the loophole MLB teams will exploit. He will then understand that he needs to publicly b**** about that loophole in order to get it closed.
  3. QUOTE (LDF @ Mar 25, 2015 -> 03:49 PM) you are really not adding the tv money into that revenue. that deal is more than 150+ million. we had this whole conversation already with some one else providing a link to the tv / cable deal. That new Fox contract money should have counted as money for last year and it should have been about $25 million. Basically 85% of operating profit of the team last year, in the Forbes numbers, was that money.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2015 -> 01:01 PM) Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet 1h1 hour ago Jay Cutler met with #Bears personnel without his agent as deadline approached for guaranteed money in 2016. Team left convinced he’s the guy QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 25, 2015 -> 01:03 PM) Apparently John Fox said that the team approached him about restructuring his contract. No word on whether he agreed to do it QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2015 -> 01:05 PM) Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet 1h1 hour ago Clarity on what Fox meant about addressing Cutler’s contract. They never talked about redoing it, did talk as contract deadline closed in Guys, remember, the Bears don't need to restructure his contract, they have the right to convert money to a bonus at any time if they choose to do so. They already did so they could sign Allen before Cutler even played a game under that contract.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2015 -> 01:00 PM) David Just ‏@davidjustCST 54m54 minutes ago Scott Boras: Major League Baseball is broken if Kris Bryant isn't on #Cubs Opening Day roster http://sun-tim.es/1BqMDZ2 You don't want that loophole? Great. What are the players willing to give up in negotiation in exchange for closing it?
  6. QUOTE (kev211 @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 08:33 PM) Who hits more homers this year abreu or Bryant? I'd have said Abreu based on the first half of last year but then Abreu's power dropped a bit and he hit every freaking ball thrown to him, just not out of the park.
  7. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 08:07 PM) Like we talked about earlier in the thread, 3 full seasons of Mike Trout got the Angels one playoff appearance and zero playoff game wins. A top 5 pitcher and top 5 hitter earned the 2014 Sox a grand total of 73 wins. This isn't the NBA, where one player makes you a contender, but Bryant sure as hell is a nice building block though. All correct. I'd totally have dumped Baez last year for the best deal I could get for him after he destroyed AAA for a year IMO, hopefully to fill in a #2 starter.
  8. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 07:31 PM) For sure. I wish this wasn't true so the cubs' rebuild would still be 3-4 yrs out. It still could be.
  9. QUOTE (shipps @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 05:46 PM) Point is, the Bulls arent going to be bad anytime soon. They may be in basketball hell the next few years by having a really good team but never quite good enough to compete for the title but it will at least be something to watch. Their big problem is obvious. They have the full time ultimate major max deal tied up in a player who hasn't been a max player for 3 years. They won't be able to change that for the next 2 unless he can return to what we saw in those couple February games and come close to being that $20 million player. $20 million in cap space locked up in that one player is the killer. Oh, and it is actually possible the Bulls could resume being bad quite soon. Just change coaches.
  10. QUOTE (BigFinn @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 06:03 PM) If the Sox think that Nate Jones is going to be able to pitch this year, they won't put him on the sixty man DL. Otherwise, when Jones is ready to pitch (even on a rehab assignment), they would have to pull someone else off the 40-man roster. If the Sox put Jones on the 60-day DL, that's pretty strong evidence that the club doesn't think he'll be ready until 2016. I disagree. Guys always get dropped from the 40 man during the year, sometimes if they're struggling they can even be passed through waivers completely.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 05:27 PM) Projecting....or Shuck and Viciedo could join them. WTF? I know Viciedo is gone, that happened weeks ago. I was busy for a couple days and now it's become completely impossible to understand your name dropping. You're dropping names of people we released in the same sentence as people still on the roster and I have no idea which is which. Does anyone have an actual list of OFs in Charlotte? Are Mitchell and Thompson in our minor league camp? I can't figure this out any more.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 05:22 PM) He should get lots of OF time as well. Nobody to really block at AAA. Thompson, Mitchell, Beltre....Campana and Taylor are gone already. Thompson and Mitchell aren't at AAA? Did I miss them getting outrighted last week?
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 03:56 PM) This is what people are missing here... how do you get Leury a full season of AAA AB's? Who of Davidson, Saladino and Sanchez do you remove playing time from to give it to him? No one, for me. Leury ought to work as an actual super-sub. Every one of those guys along with the OFs can sit one day a week. That's 5-6 games Leury could play a week, and that's assuming no one gets hurt which will happen at some poitn.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 03:49 PM) A .650 OPS is 251 points above where Garcia was last year. To give some depth to how much improvement that is, adding 250 points to Bonifacios OPS would get you up to Miguel Cabrera. (actually .895) QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 04:10 PM) We could totally go off of the .475 OPS he put in the majors in 2013. At age 21 in AA, Leury got 400 PAs and put up a .734 OPS. Age 22 he got 1/2 a minor league season and put up a .708 OPS while spending >1/2 the year with big league teams as a fillin. At age 22, Bonifacio got to AA for the first time and put up a .685 OPS. Leury was a year younger when he arrived at AA and outhit Bonifacio, except Bonifacio got 600 PA that year. Bonifacio then went to AAA the next year at age 23 and put up a .758 OPS again in a full season. Leury got to AA faster than Bonifacio and outhit him that first year there. The difference is that then Leury got called up immediately whereas Bonifacio had time to actually play. Bonifacio got 1200 PAs over 2 minor league seasons while Leury got 650 and a lot of time on the big league bench. These two aren't that different based on minor league #s. Their averages, slugging, OBP, walk rate, and K Rate are close enough that you could make up the difference by "one guy being a year older and more disciplined at the same level" or even just "chance of the pitchers he's facing" for the guy who only got 1/2 seasons. Leury hasn't had a successful season like Bonifacio had at AAA but he's never had a full season at AAA. Maybe Leury will be forever doomed, early callups and lack of playing time could easily do that to a guy, but I've got absolutely no reason from their minor league numbers why you'd say "Bonifacio will be a guy we spend big league money on as a FA and Leury Garcia is a wasteland we should give up on."
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 04:38 PM) If they were that high on him, he'd still be with the team in camp. Why on Earth is that true? Having him break with the big league team last year was the wrong decision if we were trying to develop him - he was only there so we could have a backup DH have at trophy year. He should be sent down! I think he's got a potential positive future still and he should be playing against minor leaguers regularly, everyday, in minor league camp, bouncing between positions.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 02:31 PM) Disagree. We've seen him in the majors for 1.5 seasons now, 94 games, over 200 PA. He posted a .399 OPS in 74 games last year. That's not a SLG or OBP, that is OPS. That is worse than a lot of pitchers. He was 24 that season, which is young but not THAT young. He's been playing pro ball since 2008. Even that defense he's known for was nothing spectacular to my eyes. Yes he can play all over, yes he's likely to be semi-comptetent or better at many of them. Yes he can run. But to me, he is behind Sanchez, Saladino and maybe even Juan Diaz for MIF depth in the minors, as all of them could provide superior value IMO. I'd hate for him to get playing time above any of them. Would you expect a guy who skipped AA and AAA to be on the big league bench to be better than that? How much better? My version of this is "you put the guy in a position where he was supposed to fail. You can't be surprised if he failed at it".
  17. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 22, 2015 -> 11:00 PM) When you say better security is it because they are less attractive targets? No, I can actually see that its harder to log into my account fraudulently. They legitimately have more safeguards in place. Takes me an extra 5 seconds every time.
  18. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 02:25 PM) Personally I think he's a dime a dozen no hit all glove type that probably isn't elite enough at one position (say SS) to ever be anything more than a .5 WAR utility guy -- if that. That said, he's not costing them any real money and the 40 man isn't full so yea send him down and see what happens. I'd be totally ok with that and you'll note that we spent a couple million bringing in guys to do that already this year.
  19. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 01:43 PM) Huh, figured they would have just released Leury to clear a spot on the 40 man. Guess there's no rush but usually it seems teams "do a solid" to guys like that and just grant them release to see if they can grab a big league job elsewhere. Well maybe Leury just has no shot and everyone agreed AAA is where he'd best be served. Leury Garcia is a player with decent potential, particularly on defense. Strong arm, decent skills, but extremely raw in every aspect of the game. It makes no sense to give him away. He may never see the big leagues again, but then he may also do so. If we were doing "what is best for the chances of developing him" he'd have gotten a full season in AA in 2013 and a full AAA season in 2014, he was instead on the big league bench. That's a setup where anyone not named Mike Trout should be expected to struggle.
  20. He could definitely fit on that list but "1 injury-shortened successful season" isn't a track record that stands out unless you've done something ridiculous in the minors like Hamilton. Give us 150 games doing that next year and he's perhaps top 5-6.
  21. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 11:37 AM) You have Quintana on 3 days rest. Not happening. 4-6 at KC Samardzija 4-7 4-8 at KC Quintana 4-9 at KC Noesi 4-10 vs Min Danks 4-11 vs Min Penny 4-12 vs Min Samardzija 4-13 4-14 at Cle Quintana 4-15 at Cle Noesi 4-16 4-17 at Det Danks 4-18 at Det Sale 4-19 at Det Samardzija 4-20 vs Cle Quintana 4-21 vs Cle Noesi 4-22 vs Cle Danks Rinse. Repeat. FWIW, I'd much rather break up Noesi and Danks rather than have them back to back.
  22. QUOTE (LDF @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 07:24 AM) well, as some has said, it is a nice position to be in, this season, after the playoff, i would like to reevaluate the outfield. the sox are tied into a friendly contract with Melky, and the other 2 the sox have control. continue to let Hawkins develop. the sox really doesn't have to make a move in the roster, concerning OF, 1b or dh till after next yr. so, let see how things develop and see how Avi does in the outfield. If all 3 of them are playing well and Hawkins were to have a good year at AA, you send him to AAA and he's the obvious callup in case of injury. That's not a bad thing at all and that would likely give him a chance at some point the next eyar.
  23. QUOTE (SCCWS @ Mar 22, 2015 -> 09:33 PM) I read all these positive offensive things and I figured we won. I see why no one mentioned our pitching or lack ther of today. It seems like we are giving up a lot of homeruns lately. No one is going to be mad about Samardzija giving up 5 runs while stretching out his arm in ST. Cleto gave up 2 runs and seems to have been worthless. Not quite sure he was on top of the list for making the bullpen as it was. Quick outing for Duke, gave up a hit. I'm not quite sure who Phillips or León actually are and they gave up the rest.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 22, 2015 -> 06:39 PM) Anyone use a credit union? Do you feel like there's a convenience factor lost? Feel the same as a bank with some perks? Main convenience lost is nationwide use, but at least for mine they have a partnership with PNC so they have ATM access throughout the region. I generally hate the nationwide bank I use to enable that so it feels like "small inconvenience" in exchange for generally better rates and frankly more effective security.
  25. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 22, 2015 -> 08:19 AM) He did't play last year, and got hurt on March 7th and hasn't returned. It's not everything obviously but also the last time he was a positive defender according to UZR or DRS was 2011.
