QUOTE (Tex @ Mar 30, 2015 -> 02:35 PM) Sorry, my examples are confusing the question I was trying to ask. I was also discussing a tangent, should a business be allowed to refuse service? Can a person be a protester just by standing there doing nothing? If a shop keeper is known for refusing to serve a Muslim, would any Muslim person walking into the shop be in affect protesting? Again, this is exactly what the sit ins were. Black people sitting down at whites only counters just wanting to be served while the businesses refused to do so, while waiting for them to remove the people by force for wanting to buy lunch.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 30, 2015 -> 02:32 PM) Based on case law and precedent, yes. Therefore, I fully stand by my sit-in comparison.

Germanwings (Lufthansa) plane crashes into Alps

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 30, 2015 -> 02:04 PM) But that's bulls***, at least with the posters here, because we have all generally agreed to a bevy of additional requirements including registration, training, further penalties on sellers, etc. and yet it's still not enough. And those aren't the only options. Currently there are a number of laws on who can have a gun, how it can be used, when it can be used, etc. Just because criminals don't follow the law doesn't mean they don't exist. Exactly why there should be extra safeguards, like not allowing them on the streets, requiring trigger locks, and not having a single pilot alone in the cabin. -
If I read all the "negatives" correctly, you think the government has a compelling reason to prevent discrimination against black people by private businesses, but the government shouldn't do the same thing for homosexuals?

QUOTE (Señor Ding-Dong @ Mar 30, 2015 -> 01:47 PM) I think that's a fair comparison, but at the same time I see Sanchez hitting better than Beckham's career .245 BA. I'm thinking more like .260-.270, if that means anything given his non-existent power and lack of XBH. In other words...Omar Infante.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 29, 2015 -> 05:28 PM) Coming off of TJ surgery, that is impossible to know with Aiken. You can hope he is the best player, but you can't know for sure how he will take after the surgery. The only reason why I wouldn't be willing to take that gamble with a pick around #10 is if Coop said no.

By the way, there are now several legal articles outlining how this case is much broader than the national-level religious freedom act that has already caused so much annoyance.

QUOTE (Tex @ Mar 30, 2015 -> 12:23 PM) I believe a key difference between being a passenger on an airplane and a customer in a store is the different level of trust. I don't trust the clerk at Starbucks with my life, I do with the pilot. I would hope the screening would be much different. Interesting is Balta and I are making the same connection but coming with much different conclusions. I'd rather they keep their guns than fly a plane. he'd rather take away their guns and give them an airplane. Of course we both would rather they receive quality health care* and be fine with a gun and an airplane. *We should not differentiate between mental health and other health. I'm not sure I'd trust the pilot to be alone in the cockpit no matter who they were, and they receive a heckuva lot more training than we require of gun owners in many states now. -
QUOTE (Tex @ Mar 30, 2015 -> 12:18 PM) As much as I really dislike this law, I do wonder if stores should have the right to refuse service. On a theoretical point, imagine a group of protesters inside a steak restaurant chanting against eating meat. Obviously we all agree the owner should have the right to remove the group because they are harming that business. Now, what if you have a really messed up business (IMHO it is messed up) that caters to a very anti-XX crowd. A large group of XX show up just to drive away the core customers. They will be gone next month along with the regulars. Can you protest by just being you? If I'm a white southern kitchen owner and I don't want to serve African Americans at my counter, can I put up a "Whites Only" sign? If a group of black people sit down there and I refuse to serve them, doesn't the owner have the right to remove them for harming the business? This has something of an historical precedent.

I'm in at the pessimistic sub .500 level. They get off to a poor start and it snowballs. Maybe mix in an injury or two that really hurts early in the year. They wind up seeing continuing erosion of revenues as May/June go on and throw in the towel in July by trading away a couple of their more expensive guys. I've been wrong basically every year I can remember so I may as well set myself up for that again. -
QUOTE (shysocks @ Mar 30, 2015 -> 10:31 AM) Relevant to the discussion of how many lefties to have in the pen: Dan Jennings has relatively pronounced reverse splits in his career. .757 OPS allowed against lefties, .711 against rightes. I mentioned this the day we traded for him and still really hope somebody has informed Robin Ventura of this. Those splits don't strike me as "relatively pronounced". That's actually pretty unpronounced for most relievers.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 30, 2015 -> 11:22 AM) The idea that in both situations someone can cause the death of someone else. 99% of the time it doesn't happen, but 1% of the time it does. Balta likes to point to the 1% with guns and say "see look how dangerous, ban them all!" Yet with planes and depression he's willing to give a pass apparently because it doesn't happen that often. The logic in the reaction isn't consistent. I'm ok with reasonable safeguards which clearly did not happen in this case - that's a clear failure of imagination on the part of the airlines and manufacturers. I'd probably be ok with reasonable safeguards on firearms as well. But since every time I try to suggest some either that's impossible or its an undue burden on this important group, I wind up saying f*** it. If my only 2 options are idiots who think they're rambo walking down the street with concealed weapons or banning them, then get rid of them all. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 29, 2015 -> 07:55 PM) I still think they'd prefer the relative "certainty" (725ish-800ish OPS) of Viciedo compared to risking the season giving Davidson another major league tryout. DAYAN. VICIEDO. IS. NOT. ON. THE. WHITE. SOX. ROSTER. HIS OPS LAST YEAR WAS .686. HE'S NEVER PUT UP AN OPS ABOVE .744 IN A SEASON. YOU'RE INVENTING NUMBERS THAT MAKE NO SENSE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE ON OTHER TEAMS ROSTERS FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN TO CONFUSE ME. BALTA ANGRY.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Mar 29, 2015 -> 05:13 PM) Awesome, Wilkins is a dime a dozen career AAAA 1B. They have Dan Black for that role. If Jose and LaRoche are both injured for long stretches the team is f***ed anyways. Andy Wilkins isn't saving that day. Wilkins is quite a bit closer to a big league player than Black, IMO.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Mar 29, 2015 -> 04:54 PM) Sox fans, if he's available at 8 (which I think he absolutely will be) this June do you take him? I know I wouldn't, but I'm just curious, I saw fans of deeper systems hoping he falls Yes.

QUOTE (3GamesToLove @ Mar 29, 2015 -> 04:10 PM) Anyone think he'd be interested in returning to the Sox on a short deal after this season? I'm not sure how much money he'd command. Would round out the rotation pretty well. To be fair...we already are going to need to find a slot for a different LHer this offseason. Mark! won't be a 6th starter. -
QUOTE (Mike F. @ Mar 29, 2015 -> 03:58 PM) I also have an additional question. If they have him on the team to start the season but then send him down at some point, is he still exposed to waivers then? Is it like the Nieto case last year where if the Sox would've sent him down, the Nationals could've claimed him back? Outside of the disabled list, as far as I know yes, the Sox would have to pass him through waivers to be able to send him to AAA. If they want to hold him he needs a 25 man roster spot.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Mar 29, 2015 -> 02:33 PM) So it sounds like the White Sox will be using Drabek out of the bullpen? He could make the team in that case. Hard to believe they'd claim him and then expose him to waivers again in a week.
-
I still think he could be a decent platoon 1b/DH but that's not a role every team needs. I'm ok keeping Drabek around for a bit and losing him.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2015 -> 08:07 PM) In the meantime should Indiana just secede now? Well that would be one way for them to make the gay-free state that's so important to them.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 27, 2015 -> 07:24 PM) Another payroll cut? I am pretty sure the payroll went up this year. Regardless, I don't think the 5-10 million dollars in payroll is the difference between a playoff team and a team that stays home in October. The core will still be there and be cost effective. It'll be one year closer to getting out from under John Danks. Obviously you want to win but it's not like an 81-81 team shuts the window of contention. "Another" a-la what happened prior to last year. IMO, they made ~$30 million last year and added $20 million in payroll. They shoot to be profitable, not break even. Last year's team saw about a $10 million erosion in revenue outside of the extra MLB money. If we see another $10 million erosion in revenue this year, we're going to see something similar in a salary cut. That doesn't just mean Samardzija is gone, that means we have to move Cabrera or someone like that as well.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 27, 2015 -> 06:59 PM) Obviously devastating injuries can happen but if we won 75 games I still think we'll be in a better position this time next year. Very exciting time. Totally disagree. Another sub .500 season where ticket sales erode again and interest is lost is going to mean another payroll cut.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2015 -> 03:53 PM) Vincent Goodwill @vgoodwill 2h2 hours ago Derrick Rose didn't go through contact practice today, per Thibs. Hinted maybe next week it could happen Literally yesterday he said contact was "in the next 2 weeks". I saw nothing about it happening today anywhere.
