Shark opening day starter

Featured Replies

@ChiTribKane: Jose Quintana says for now he is scheduled to pitch the second game of the season, which would leave Jeff Samardzija as opening day starter.

Q deserves it

Only one player has started opening day for the Sox and Cubs.

Q deserved it, but it doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things. Just would have rather it gone to a guy who has earned his keep with this team.

Not that it matters, but Q has been much better this spring

I guess it doesn't matter but I would have liked to see it go to Q.

Maybe they're trying to curry favor with Jeffrey to get him to accept a hometown discount.

Q definitely deserves it, he's having a better spring and HE'S BEEN ON THE TEAM LONGER. He's also going to be on the team for years to come, can't say that about Shark.

I guess this means Noesi is the opening day starter. Well deserved!

This makes sense if they do expect Sale to pitch the 12th. You go 1-4 starters, a spot start from a long reliever (Penny?), and then Sale slides in at the front.

Yea I would think it has entirely to do with matchups and schedule like you're saying.

I love Q, he absolutely deserves it, but Shark makes sense on the match-ups and Sale coming back plus that extra respect card to get him to re-sign with us. No issue with this at all, I've anticipated this all along when Sale went down. I think he will eat up the "new" KC (FU Rios), not as much as Sale would but Ventura vs. our new line up against Big Game Shields' vs. last years line up doesn't phase me. Sox will be 1-0 at the end of the day. Book it.

Why would they give Shark that much rest with an off day though? So he would start Monday and then not pitch again until the following Monday? If Sale is indeed starting on April 12th, there is no reason to keep Penny on the roster.

4/6 Shark vs Royals

4/8 Quintana vs Royals

4/9 Danks vs Royals

4/10 Noesi vs Twins

4/11 Shark vs Twins

4/12 Sale vs Twins

They could switch Danks and Noesi as well.

This would have been a good idea to showcase Q as the star that he is, whereas everyone knows Shark and a good chance he'll be here 1 year anyways.

Samardzija should be pitching on Saturday cause the sox will be off Monday the 13th and 2 days in Cleveland and off again Thursday then at Detroit on friday. If sale is to make the start on the April 12th then you would need have the rotation go shark, quintana, noesi and danks. Cause if samardzija pitches Saturday and sale pitches Sunday then you have sale and quintana pitch back to back. If danks is the 3rd starter then you have the 3 lefties in a row so probably noesi is the 3rd starter. That would probably make danks the home opener tho. It would be ideal for sox to have shark to pitch Saturday and sale Sunday. Friday is going to be sold out anyway for home opener. Having your 2 best pitchers pitch the rest of the weekend should push tickets sales.

Agreed about the nod should go to Q but it is what it is. Here's my guess as to how the rotation plays out.

Shark 4/6

Q. 4/8

Noesi 4/9

Danks. 4/10

Shark. 4/11

Noesi. 4/14

Danks. 4/15

Sale. 4/17

Well s*** fire, you're right. Good catch!

I like the way you played it out better so I'm going to go with that. :D

What an home opener weekend for the sox. Who wouldn't want to see brad penny and john danks?

Long season. Masters weekend.

I agree that Q "deserves" it, but in the long run the only thing that matters is whoever it is strikes out Moustakas & Hosmer every time they step up to bat. I can't stand those two.

Ticket-wise, you are better off having Penny or Danks pitch the home opener. People are gonna go no matter who is pitching, maybe you sell a few extra tickets later if Shark or Sale pitch on a much less desirable day.

Was ready to make the "Sox are favorites for the -insert year in past- division title!" joke. Looked up their numbers. They never had overlapping good years. =(

Until 2015 of course.

FWIW, I'd much rather break up Noesi and Danks rather than have them back to back.

I hope Sale pitches on the 12th. I'm going to that game, and I'd love to see him in person.
