The Miami Marlins thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 04:12 PM) Just win, baby. The millionaire players win games; the manager is a genius. The millionaire players lose games, the manager is a bum. Been that way forever; will be that way forever. The millionaire manager's players don't come ready to play, the manager isn't at fault. The millionaire manager's players come ready to play, the manager is awesome.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 04:05 PM) You missed my point. I'm not saying that inter-party squabbles are a problem. I'm talking about the fact that it doesn't matter what party you are, you're the same because you work for people with money (I didn't think it was necessary to post a link establishing that Republicans also want the threshold to be much, much higher). A million dollar threshold is asinine. If people in government were truly representing their districts, that would not be a consideration. But as it is the middle class will get f***ed because congress works for what put them in office - $$. And the longer they're there, the more they get for those donors. So...do you think that the people who insist "getting more money in the hands of the job creators is the way out of this recession" are lying to cover for their donors or does the party that sounds like actually believe that is true?

2012-2013 NBA thread
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 03:44 PM) The Bulls should do that. Make an Asik-sized offer on Lopez. They literally can't. They cannot offer more than the $5 million MLE, and that's if Asik isn't extended.

White Sox may go after Starting Pitching
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 12:32 AM) Still don't believe we have the pieces for a Greinke or Hamels, and I'm not even sure I'd want Greinke... One other thing on the Greinke/Hamels discussion...if we wanted to go after either of them, the team we're going to have to beat for them is the Rangers, who sure as heck sound like they're willing to part with 3b prospect Mike Olt (#34 on BA's list coming into the year) for starting pitching. Makes sense anyway, since Adrian Beltre isn't giving up their 3b spot for several years.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 11:39 AM) Because the benefit of having a guy like Strom Thurmond or Robert Byrd in the senate for FIFTY years is what? There's absolutely no positive from guys being in Congress that long. The longer they're in, the more corrupt/shady/unrepresentative they become. The other thing that happens though...they become better deal-makers. They actually improve at writing laws and getting them passed. You put a bunch of first or second term congresspeople in there, you get what the Republicans are dealing with right now...people who won't sign off on anything, to the detriment of not only the country, but even their own leadership/party.

QUOTE (forrestg @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 11:12 AM) Anyone's argument about all or nothing hitting by Dunn is absurd. Jees no one is expecting to do it every time but Thome or accidentally on purpose would occasionally slap it to left for a base hit with good results. I'm not sure how well Thome was at controlling it but it was a thing of beauty when he place the ball to left. For the amount of money we pay him he should be able to hit it anyplace he wants to. I don't believe he is that one dimensional. Adam Dunn's hit chart this season. He does occasionally slap it to left for a base hit.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 09:58 AM) Our system is f***ed for the reason you point out - the same groups of people are putting the same types of people into positions of power who only work for their own self-interest. We should have term limits, we should have better campaign finance rules, and we should do everything we can to have more than two major political powers. Yes, I agree in the end the voter holds all the power. But i'm convinced that 80% of this country is full of morons. The "OMG Obama is gonna pay for my gas! or OMG the gays have brought upon this drought!" crowd care more about who wins American Idol than they do who is President. The two major parties know it, they've fabricated this bulls*** "us against them" mentality because they know that even if they lose THIS election, the next one is right around the corner and it's always a 50/50 game. I say this every time it comes up...after watching the California Legislature...I'm strongly opposed to term limits at the legislative level.

2012 White Sox Catch-All thread
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 10:28 AM) Does anyone know where I can find a link for a white sox updated payroll chart? The Sox are in a unique situation as they may finally have some financial flexibility next off season. I would like to see where they currently stand. Can someone send me a link?? Baseball-Reference.

Peavy named to All Star Team
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 10:42 AM) I like this idea. But, I think we are deserving on some more All-Stars. AJ certainly but we seem to miss Alex Rios. What a season he is having! Rios has the 9th highest OPS amongst OF's in the AL. #10 and #11 were Granderson and Adam Jones, both of whom are all stars, but who play CF. Josh Willingham, Josh Reddick, Austin Jackson, and Shin Soo Choo all have higher OPS than Rios and are missing the AS game.

QUOTE (balfanman @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 09:49 AM) I agree wholeheartedly, He tries every time. But....most of those time he tries to hit the ball hard and it's on the ground, or a line drive to the first base side. A few more of those could be hits, if say, once in a while he goes the other way, particularly when no one is on, or a pitcher that he doesn't see very well. And in exchange for a few more of those being hits, a few less could be home runs.

Help me understand the shift.
QUOTE (balfanman @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 09:43 AM) I realize everything that's been said so far. He doesn't have to hit it hard to the 3rd base side, just enough to get to the infield dirt or so. With nobody there, the chances of him being thrown out are nil. I know that you don't have a Dunn on your team to hit singles, but when a situation comes up with men on base and you just need to "keep the line moving", which happens pretty often, Dunn hits a hard ground ball to the first base side which is an easy out because they have four fielders over there. If you only had 3 fielders over there a few more of those might get through, extending the inning. Heck, this is all that was needed several times in the last week or so. I know we went 5 - 1 on the homestand, but we all know that if it wasn't for Youkilis we would of probably went, at best 2 - 4, and been in a team slump at the All Star break. I can't see a small adjustment like this hurting Dunns' swing. If anything, I think that it would help it, especially his confidence. It's obvious after last season that Dunn is a guy who can be affected tremendously by his confidence level. If Adam Dunn comes up with men on base...Adam Dunn should try to hit a home run.

White Sox may go after Starting Pitching
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 09:23 AM) He just needs to make some adjustments. The hitters have adjusted and started getting to him...now he's just got to show them something different. I feel like his control has been way off lately?

Help me understand the shift.
QUOTE (SnB @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 09:16 AM) The sox didn't get Dunn to hit singles. The opponents would gladly give Dunn a single every time he comes up if it meant taking away 100% of his power. It's really difficult to imagine a situation where Adam Dunn could come to the plate and I'd want him to do something like "lay down a bunt to the LH Side". Maybe...maybe in a 0-0 game against a LH starter. I mean, you're down by 1...you want Dunn swinging for the fences. Tie game...you want Dunn swinging for the fences to try to generate a 1 run lead. ahead by 1, you want Dunn to add an insurance run. Ahead by 2...maybe you could talk me into it here. Ahead by 3 or more...then theyr'e going to plunk Dunn in the back next time up.

2012-2013 NBA thread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 09:10 AM) Seriously, some dumb team is always willing to jump in to make things work to create super teams. If the moronic f***ing Minnesota Twimberwolves don't s*** themselves to acquire Michael f***ing Beasley, the summer that shan't be named never happens. Now this - the s***ty Cavaliers (a team that should know better) are hopping in to help Dwight get to f***ing Brooklyn. The league, and s***ty teams like the cavaliers, make more money when there are things like the Heat, Lakers, Nets drawing crowds. If they can't have a #1 seed themselves, then they can keep their salary low and fatten up on revenue sharing.

GT: Toronto Blue Jays @ Chicago White Sox
QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 8, 2012 -> 06:10 PM) I like his game behind the plate. I'd take Gimenez too over Flowers. I'm fine with Flowers's game behind the plate. If we're replacing him, it better be for someone who we expect to...hit.

GT: Toronto Blue Jays @ Chicago White Sox
QUOTE (Cerbaho-WG @ Jul 8, 2012 -> 06:03 PM) Agreed. Felt like we were playing uphill with Reyburn's wacky strike zone. And if they're throwing Axe out on 3 days rest, there was a good chance the Sox were going to get beaten up today. That it was so close, especially throwing in umpiring, is kind of impressive.

Will the Royals ever be good?
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 8, 2012 -> 05:18 PM) Because I'm talking about the long-term outlook of the franchise and that right there is 2/5 of a rotation to fill and we're not talking about stiffs. Balta made a comment as if the Pirates have finally broken through and that's just not true. The only reason the Pirates have been good this year is because of their pitching and they'll have to replace those two guys fairly soon or commit big dollars to them that will prevent them from doing other things. Plus their offense is garbage outside of one player. I just don't think they have a great major league core to build around yet. Not sure what you're even arguing here. I wouldn't feel like a team needs a multi-year run like the Rays to have "broken through" or become good of however we're going to say it. Pirates are right in the thick of things this year, 11 games above .500, leading the NL Central at the break with a better record than the White Sox.
