QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 15, 2012 -> 02:05 PM) I'm not trying to solve the problem of traders being stupid and losing money. If JPM wants to be an investment bank and make trades like this and they end up crashing and burning, they won't take the whole banking industry with them because commercial banking will be separate. Except...Lehman brothers made trades like that, that they didn't understand, after a decade of telling everyone exactly what Jamie Dimon has spent the last 4 years telling everyone...and they would have taken down the whole banking industry. GS would not have changed that. It might have protected some institutions, and kept Citi and BofA smaller, but the entire financial system still would have imploded and still would have needed to be bailed out.

I really hate how after 5+ years of this, my legs still decide that they have days where they are going to give as much effort as Lebron in a tough playoff series and I'm going to have to fight through it the whole day. F*** you legs. /rant.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 15, 2012 -> 02:00 PM) If you are uncomfortable playing center, you play deeper. If he was a better CF, he'd play more shallow. If he played more shallow, he'd have had that much farther to go back to get to that screaming line drive Fielder hit last night, and probably still not gotten it, just not looked as bad while doing it. Therefore, he should play more shallow so we can criticize his range rather than his positioning.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 15, 2012 -> 01:51 PM) He plays so deep many times his first step or two is in that's how he got burned last night. So if he played shallow...he'd have gotten to that ball over his head?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 15, 2012 -> 11:29 AM) You'd still be compartmentalizing the damage to some extent. JPM collapsing or Chase collapsing is less bad than JPM Chase collapsing. you could even use all the same risk management and hedging language Dimon loves to justify it. Yes, GS would be nice, but if it doesn't solve the problem then it doesn't solve the problem.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 15, 2012 -> 11:19 AM) It separates the highly risky, not-really-well-understood proprietary hedging done by investment banks and the boring ol' commercial banking world. As far as I can tell though...that's no longer an issue. We're at the point where if one of these investment banks implodes...it doesn't matter if they have customer accounts or not, their implosion takes out everything. The example, of course, is Lehman. If you stripped Chase out of JPM, JPM could still convince itself it knows what it's doing, still make incredibly bad bets, still blow itself up, and then still need to be bailed out by the government, even if it didn't have the boring old commercial banking attached to it.

15 day DL for Matt Kemp.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 15, 2012 -> 11:10 AM) Why not reinstate Glass-Stegall? (Technically wouldn't solve the real issue on its own)

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 15, 2012 -> 10:53 AM) They got completely smoked the one game Rose played. A healthy Bulls squad would have swept them and averaged right around 100. They are a painful matchup for the Celtics, however. I watched some of Q4 last night and couldn't believe how lackadasical Rondo appeared. He had more than a few chances to drive into the lane, and just kept settling for jumpers.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 15, 2012 -> 10:47 AM) His stats show regression despite playing with the best distributor in the NBA. His game says he really can't score with anyone between him and the basket, and his shooting is horrendous. Blake Griffin is not even close to an NBA superstar. There's serious, legit talent there, but it could use some coaching.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 15, 2012 -> 10:44 AM) That's not really news, the FBI started looking into the hate-crime aspect two months ago. They wouldn't be running that today if they didn't have someone, somewhere, telling them that something new was about to break on the Federal side in that case. Unless the media outlets in Florida are just that bad.
-
Apparently today's the day for new news in this case.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 15, 2012 -> 10:30 AM) Nah, that could be anything, really...it could just be video of Martin walking in the community by himself, to be honest. Well, it's only really relevant if it helps establish the timeline.
-
Can't tell what it shows, but one of the pieces of evidence the Prosecution handed over to the defense yesterday is security camera video from the clubhouse in the gated community. That would only be relevant if it showed some portion of the chase/interaction between the 2.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 15, 2012 -> 08:40 AM) Chicago-Obama ties and raising the profile of Chicago as a "world-class" city. Add in a dose of "Rahm", that has to fit in there somewhere.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 15, 2012 -> 08:28 AM) And in any case you will also hear the screaming and moaning about the pick then

QUOTE (Jake @ May 15, 2012 -> 12:20 AM) It was a bit of an adventure, but I think Hector is still trending upward. They were not seeing his fastball well at all for some reason. He's whipping up a 94 mph fastball from the left hand side and he can climb the ladder and still get them to chase. That's a very good starting point for a pitcher. If we want to turn him into soemthing special though, he needs to regularly be able to get the offspeed stuff over the plate and at the knees.
-
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 15, 2012 -> 09:15 AM) If the Sox do attempt to trade Peavy at the deadline they should really tell teams they'll pick up the buyout. If they don't trade him they will have to pick it up anyways and that would probably open up the market for him more and increase the expected return value they would receive for him You're preaching to the choir...but we're not the ones who make that call.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ May 14, 2012 -> 10:16 PM) Good job Stewart! (not the game thread, but impressive enough that you can compliment here too.)
