QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 11:28 AM) The perceived bonus demands were the big problem that made Chris fall. Really? I neither recall that nor believe that honestly, since the White Sox aren't exactly known for picking guys with big bonus demands, and a lot of teams above us who needed pitching do have a habit of going over slot. A whole lot of people thought the Royals would take him at 4, IIRC. Putting Sale in the bigs his first year wouldn't exactly cover for much of the big bonus issue. It's also not hard to find scouting reports from the 2010 draft saying that if he drops its because of his arm motion. Keith Law, btw, has also never liked him. Same reason.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 11:12 AM) If he's ready for the major leagues, and the team isn't in contention for a playoff spot, and we need pitchers, what is the difference in him pitching 50 innings in the majors as opposed to 50 innings in the minors? If a pitcher is ready, he is ready. There is no magical innings mark that distinguishes it People consistently say there's a huge difference in terms of the effort you're putting into pitches at the MLB level when you have to face major league hitters. That's why people say that having thrown 150 innings in the minors doesn't make you ready to throw 150 in the bigs all the time. Thats why people were concerned enough about Sale's health for him to drop out of the top 5 in the draft despite him having thrown 150 innings 2 years in a row. This guys' arm will benefit from the work at a lower level, and there is a much larger risk than you guys are willing ot admit in pushing him hard. If we were talkign about a guy who had been a high school and college pitcher, or who had been a pitcher since he was 16 in the Jays org, that's one thing, we're not. The fact that he's a converted starter and that he has so few innings on his arm total ought to be the real focus here, because that's what makes pushing htis guy hard so exceptionally risky.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 10:35 AM) Because there is no way he is ready before reaching some magical minor league innings threshold? If he is ready, he is ready, whenever that may be. Look no further than Chris Sale and Sergio Santos Yes, let's look at Sale. He threw 150 innings 2 years in a row in college if you count the offseason cape cod league he pitched in, and presumably was a pitcher in high school before that. He piled up more innings in 2 years in college, counting those offseason innings, than Molina has ever thrown. And now, we have no idea if his arm can handle the innings load of being a starter, because he was stuck in the bullpen for 1.5 years. Or let's look at Santos, who was a recent conversion to being a pitcher. By all means let's look at Sergio. He was a newly crowned pitcher, and 2 years in a row, we saw him come out of the gates great, and then fell apart when he started topping out on innings. In 2010, his ERA was above 5 in August and September. In 2011 he put up an ERA of 9.35 in September. Heck, his wearing down late in the season is one of the reasons people gave for why they were willing to trade him. If Molina got 175 minor league innings before making the big leagues I'm not going to be terribly mad. If he got 150, I'll probably start getting mad. 10 starts and 75 innings...bringing him up is a mistake. He's not going to be ready. Even if he is ready, his arm will start tiring out if he's used, and it'll be even worse if he's put in the bullpen or used sporadically to make spot starts. And then the real risk happens...that because you're working him hard, or inconsistently, or pushing him while he's tired, his mechanics start to suffer, and that's it. We've got a lot of pitchers in front of him. He's a long way away. Be patient. An extra 2 months in the minors at the end of this year won't hurt the team that badly, and it could be great for his development.

Ok, so I'm going to re-share this research from a couple years ago as a reminder.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 09:52 AM) Oh im sorry, I thought you were the guy that busted me out on tiny details in the middle of arguments with me. My bad That's why I said thanks.

QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 09:48 AM) 15 starts at Birmingham and then let's talk about bringing him up. 200 more minor league innings and then let's talk about bringing him up.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 09:44 AM) Do I honestly have to ask you this? Did you read the article? Yeah I did, but didn't memorize the guy's name. Thanks.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 09:22 AM) Devil's Tower is in Wyoming, unless there is another one I'm not aware of. You're right, i always think of it as western nebraska though since it's out away from everything in WY. my bad.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 09:40 AM) I'm sure Dino is going to make himself heard as well. THe answer here is probably obvious, but um, who?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 09:37 AM) I would be shocked if he lawyers were stupid enough to write a statement that specific with that many holes. It sounds more like a publicist type of a statement. Wouldn't you be equally shocked if the publicist wrote that statement and then didn't run it by the lawyers who had just won the case?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 09:26 AM) The only reason he won his appeal was by focusing on a very narrow piece of the entire process. Once he got off task, he opened himself up to getting hit hard. Presumably though it was the same lawyers who figured out where the loophole in the testing process rules was who wrote that statement ripping the collector.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 09:20 AM) It was really dumb of Braun to put all of this on the collector when he made his speech. He should have just left it at "we won the arbitration case" and left it at that, but he went after the character of an unnamed person who now has a name, and has had his livelihood and integrity questioned. I have a feeling this isn't over by a long shot. I don't know if MLB will challenge this ruling in court or not, but that's the only way "This isn't over". That and the boo's. And either his next positive test or the dropoff in his numbers.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 08:55 AM) I'm not faulting Franklin, but how about taking recent developments into concern when making policy? Compounding the problem is that much of the country is already an hour ahead of its natural time zone, so it's doubling the problem. On March 12 in South Bend, sunrise will be at 8:01 am with sunset at 7:49 pm. How messed up is that? The current round of policymaking is not necessarily intelligent.

If you're heading in the northerly direction first to get to the Rushmore area, western Nebraska/Wyoming/Montana is spectacular country with more visitable sites than I can count. (I included Western Nebraska because of Devil's Tower).

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 08:50 AM) SPN Stats & Info @ESPNStatsInfo Indiana is the 4th team in past 10 years with 3 wins over AP Top-5 teams. Last time Hoosiers did that they won the national title. Clearly though, Indiana did not do this in the past 10 years. This statemetn is at best partially misleading. -
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Feb 28, 2012 -> 11:11 PM) How many guys in the minors can hit 100? Even on the minors guns...not many.

QUOTE (He_Gawn @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 07:14 AM) I think IU could also be poised to make a run. Their in the tournament, nothing to lose. I think maybe a S16 before we're trounced? Next year could be very special... Add in a top 3 class class to this exact same team a year older (minus verdell)... YIKES Doesn't Creek have 1 more year of attempts to not get hurt also? Anyway, IU ought to be in the 5-12/4-13 danger zone, but in a normal year 2.5 of those teams advance, and then you have a big time 4-5 matchup in the round of 32. The Sweet 16 ought to be where you predict they wind up just based on numbers. That said...we know they can win huge games at home, we know they're not very good on the road, but we know pretty much nothing about them on a neutral site. They play like last night, they can take anyone. They come out iffy...eh... And frankly, I have no idea what kind of job Crean does at getting guys amped for a tourney game, since...well yeah, you know. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 07:27 AM) Or Molina is as good as Kenny and Paddy think he is. There really isn't anyone who thinks Stewart and Axelrod at their peak are anything but back of the rotation guys. Castro is also a mixed bag. He was highly regarded, but he also flopped last year. Molina could easily pass them all for his ceiling alone. That's all certainly true...but it still doesn't mean that needing Molina to be the one to fill a role this year isn't a huge disaster. -

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Feb 29, 2012 -> 12:42 AM) I'm totally with you. If I was the manager, I'm giving Peavy the OD start, no doubt about it. We brought him in to be an ace. Send him out there to be an ace. It'd show him the team and organization still had confidence in him. He wants me to have confidence in him? He can go win some bleeping ballgames. He's been paid enough money to do so. -
