This injury was suffered on August 12. The strategy of not putting him on the IL has allowed him to play in 12 of the team's 28 games since then, with a .194 average and a .515 OPS in 38 plate appearances.

Cleveland has 9 wins over the White Sox this year and 10 wins seals the tiebreaker. The teams have 4 games left. Cleveland has the tiebreaker with 1 win out of those 4 games. 5 games in the loss column is probably too big of a margin to overcome already, but sweeping those 4 might give them a chance. 1 loss to Cleveland makes it dramatically tougher.

Eloy Jimenez is owed $22.5 million over the next 2 years and follows that up with two $16.5 and $18.5 million option years with a $3 million buyout either year. Is that a guy who has any surplus value to anyone, let alone a team like the Marlins? $25 million over the next 2 years guaranteed? Florida pays that all the time?
-
No he can't return though, he can have the option picked up but the white sox have already DFA'd him, so that means the White Sox have decided they will pay the whole option and he can still go sign somewhere else. He doesn't need to take the buyout. I'd bet you that they owed him the entire option if he was DFAd.

What is the point of getting rid of a Moncada salary if you're also getting rid of good players? Congrats, you've moved Moncada's salary so you have more money to spend on the free agent market, but you also must replace Tim Anderson. You have $29 million extra to spend but you have no starting SS or 3b. That doesn't even pay Correa's salary this year. All you've done in that case is save Jerry Reinsdorf some money while making the team actually worse and less competitive. What's the point of doing that other than to throw a tantrum over Moncada being bad?

There aren't many comparable bad contracts. That's the problem - he's actually been that bad. Guys who have more money on their really bad looking deals: Strasburg, Rendon, Sale. Are the White Sox taking on an extra $100 million or $50 million just to clear Moncada out? That'd be a really bad move. Comparable money: Corbin. Would you do Corbin for Moncada? Guys who have bad money on their deals but who are owed less than Moncada: Hosmer, Miguel Cabrera, Josh Donaldson, Madison Bumgarner. The Tigers aren't moving Cabrera, I do guess the Red Sox would do Hosmer for Moncada and take on the extra money and the Yankees would do Donaldson for Moncada and I would be genuinely excited to see the reaction of the board if they did that. Would the D-Backs take on extra money to move Bumgarner? Honestly probably not. So I guess Moncada for Hosmer or Moncada for Corbin makes sense if you want to do a bad contract swap. Excited for either of those?

The White Sox clearly needed bullpen help in 2021 and getting 2 strongly performing RH relievers at the deadline was well justified. Their 8th inning numbers were awful even before Kimbrel took that spot. Their problem was more than anything a failure to scout a guy who had the lowest BABIP of his career to that point and the lowest HR rates of his career to that point in the season, where they needed to realize that he couldn't be the same pitcher in the 2nd half that he was beforehand.

Yoan Moncada Contract details: Guaranteed salary: 2023: $17.8 million 2024: $24.8 million. 2025: $5 million buyout. Who is taking that on right now under any circumstances? There are only a handful of players in all of MLB who have clearly worse contracts than that given his 2022 performance. $50 million remaining for 0.7 fWAR this year is Patrick Corbin territory ($59 million remaining for Corbin).

If this holds, the Guardians will be 5 games up in the loss column. If they win 1 against the White Sox, they take the tiebreaker, so in that case they would need to have 6 more losses than the White Sox. 21 games left for Cleveland. 19 games left for the White Sox. If Cleveland were to go 10-11, the White Sox need to go 14-5. 12-9 for Cleveland and the White Sox would need to go 16-3.

At least for me there is a pulldown menu on the top right of my posts under 3 dots ... look under there. -
I'd say they really dropped off the pace with that last losing streak and the sweep by the DBacks. Literally they were right there and that dropped them all the way back below .500. You can point at any other spots earlier in the year and you're right, but both teams have played good baseball since then, but that's the hole they are in right now. Had they just played tolerable ball, they're like 0.5 games back right now.

6 in a row for the Guardians and they rested Clase today so he should be available tomorrow. Stephan and Karinchak pitched today, both pitched in 3 of their last 4 games, so those 2 might be guys they try to rest tomorrow.
