  1. WaPo columnist Steve Pearlstein appears to have eaten his Wheaties over the weekend. Or something. Well, whatever it is, feed it to the rest of the media.
  2. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 10:31 AM) The bigger concern is that people don't recognize it was the right line of thinking and instead just want to attack the results. Here's my issue. If the results aren't there, then maybe I have to question that line of thinking. Maybe there's more to the "Rotating DH" concept than we gave credit to (in that case, the problem is who we chose to put there, a NL pinch hitter, rather than the concept itself).
  3. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 10:21 AM) Not at all the same thing. One guy had sucked for the better part of the last 5 years, and continued to suck. Another guy had been one of the premier run producers every year for the last 8 years or so, and he inexplicably has sucked. Same result, but different decision-making. I know which line of thinking I prefer. We know. We're just all still trying to figure out how the hell the right line of thinking produced worse results.
  4. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 10:16 AM) We tried that last year with Mark Kotsay. And then we tried the exact opposite this year with Adam Dunn.
  5. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 10:10 AM) I fear next year we'd run into the Humber dilemma with Sale as a starter, and him wearing down after around 140 innings. If we're rebuilding I think it makes perfect sense for him to start. If we're trying to win next year, you have to at least consider him for the pen- given we have other options at the SP position and secondly may need another arm down there if Thornton goes somewhere in the offseason. That's the catch-22 of putting Sale in the pen this year, and why some of us thought it was going to be a mistake. If you put Sale in the pen this year, then everything you just said becomes true, inevitably, and you have to turn your back on all that logic in order to make the right decision. When we put Sale in the pen this year, we committed to doing exactly what you say in this post, pitching him 150 innings in 2012 and having extra help ready to take some starts from him. Otherwise, he's a middle reliever for this team for the next 5 years, and that just seems like such an incredible waste.
  6. We're currently bombing moles since we've run out of other targets.
  7. Then what's the word "Reinsdorf" doing at the end of that?
  8. I will definitely say this. Now that Perry's in this race, the tone of the stuff I read has changed. I feel like a lot of people were confident that OBama could take out Romney or Bachmann or the field. I don't get the same feeling of confidence about Perry, there's much more of a doggedness in going after his record already.
  9. Wait, does that mean that Lillibrige is incredibly Christian and "is on God's team" or is he just calling JR "God".
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 09:26 AM) Naturally, Gammons is the one that gets it. There's no way the MLBPA allows for a hard slotting system, and Bud will cave. I think it's about time Bud Selig retires. Why not? Just like in the NFL...the MLBPA doesn't represent people who are yet to be drafted.
  11. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 09:44 AM) Wasn't it Morrison who we were supposedly gonna "trade" for Ozzie? I regret not doing that, because Morrison and Dayan in the corners next year would be some sweet s***. It wasn't the Sox who wouldn't do that, it was the Marlins.
  12. Sometimes I think you're right. Then I remember how we got into the Iraq debacle.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 09:49 AM) There was no evacuation. The storm intensified very quickly and no one was really ready for it. The winds shocked everyone. With the fact that there seemed to be nothing else in the area damaged, I wonder if there isn't going to be discovered to be a construction issue here.
  14. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 06:20 PM) Active rig doesn't mean that they're extracting... they may drill and then cap it because they can't transport it. You know something fun about oil transportation? The biggest lobbying issue that the pipeline operators make a case for whenever they're speaking to the media is lobbying for a restriction of individual rights and stronger government regulation. Of digging. They want "Call before you dig" laws strengthened. Commies. They'll take my backhoe when they pry it from my cold dead hands.
  15. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 10:22 PM) This might be the most misleading chart I have ever seen you post on here. And that's saying something. You're right. Because most of the reason Texas struggled for the last decade compared to the rest of the country was that it had grandfathered in significant, strong regulations of its mortgage market, which slowed growth for much of the decade but protected it somewhat from the bust. So over the period of a decade Texas wound up behind the national GDP trend, but for the last 2 years it was above it. Regulations of the sort that require actual proof of income and require loan operators to actually verify income. Things that if we tried to impose them at the national level would have you guys crying out "Regulation...the horror! Socialism!" Because that's the fun game now, to say that people aren't investing because of the horror of unnamed regulations.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 09:44 AM) I love the spacing on that chart Wages are up like 50000%! Oh wait, that is 0.5% It's my fault you can't read axes.
  17. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 08:50 AM) The NFL needs to come up with a creative offer to the city of Jacksonville to get them to agree to a lower buyout. Offer them a Super Bowl if they agree to it and make it clear that they will never have another one if they don't. Offer to have the combine or winter meetings or something like that there a few times. The "you'll never get another super bowl" threat isn't a very strong one, they're not going back to Jacksonville after the last one.
  18. Then Zambrano's gonna be in some trouble.
  19. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 08:50 AM) No scoop. Not like the Gonzalez trade. Just something I was told that definitely has been talked about by those in the know. Clearly, you don't know how the White Sox work. Sure, one guy makes the decision, but there are many who would be privy to these types of discussions. Personally, I can't believe Chairman Reinsdorf would go another year with this payroll which would almost be a requirement for a TLR hiring. It is plausible that the Sox could support this payroll level at this attendance, especially since they cut 1 dead weight contract in Teahen and are getting some insurance money back on Peavy. They are in a pretty good financial position relative to the other franchises...very low debt load, long-term owner who hasn't played any financial shenanigans to buy the team or while holding it, lots of state assistance in upkeep for the ballpark, outside revenue streams through the fact that they own the parking lots, etc.
  20. QUOTE (Rooftop Shots @ Aug 15, 2011 -> 08:25 AM) Thank You for the info. I knew their stats were bad.................but a total of 29 for 189 is just absolutely downright sick. A .153 average...not all that different from the .160 Dunn's been hititng on the season is it?
  21. Quit trying to scare us.
  22. Obviously we have no money.
  23. Balta1701 replied to Kyyle23's topic in SLaM
Apparently they will pay for the damaged lamp post.
  24. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 09:25 PM) Wait, how is the bolded any different from Ozzie The guys Ozzie has played who should be on the bench this year are overpaid?
