  1. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Apr 6, 2011 -> 09:29 AM) Why not Teahen to DH and keep Konerko at first? If Adam Dunn is not DHing, and Teahen is forced into the lineup, then give Konerko the extra rest.
  2. Ok, question for all of y'all who know the Cell market better than I do. I've been given about ~$1500 or so to spend on business related items, and my best guess for how to blow a good chunk of that is the iPad/iPhone combo. I can't use the funds available to pay the monthly service bills, but I can use them to pay for the hardware. Based on my reading, the usual iPhone purchase setup for either VZN or ATT is to spend $199 or $299 on the phone, and have the rest paid for as a discount in exchange for a 2 year service contract. Obviously, that doesn't benefit me here if I'm going to have the hardware paid for. I'd probably go with just the wi-fi version of the iPad, no need to have wireless access on it if I pick up the iPhone4 and set it up as a hotspot. Plus, most places I go have wireless setup anyway. What's the best way to do the contract setup here? I could pay the full price of the iPhone and not do a contract, but that sorta drops the benefit of signing a contract to save the money. Is there any way that I could get the bookeeping done such that I could get a credit towards the monthly bill instead of a credit towards the hardware?
  3. QUOTE (Reddy @ Apr 6, 2011 -> 09:22 AM) wtf how weird. well that's no good... TCQ as DH and Milledge in RF? Do that for a couple games (like today where there's a LHP on the mound) and if there's a RHP on the mound, Teahen to 1b and Konerko to DH.
  4. So that's what it looks like when Andruw Jones gets hit by onion rings. onions from deadspin deadspin on Vimeo.
  5. Well, that sucks. Feel better AD. At least he can only go down with this once.
  6. Yet another study backing me up.
  7. QUOTE (farmteam @ Apr 5, 2011 -> 10:35 PM) Well, part of me would be a little scared by the very slim chance one of the two right wing crazies would win. That fear? The best GOTV operation in the world.
  8. 3 hit games by Gordon Beckham. 2010: 2. 2011: 2.

Key point there though is he has to have an insurance offer. If he hasn't started the job, he hasn't been offered their insurance.
  11. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 5, 2011 -> 06:12 PM) Dude, seriously...I know you're being sarcastic, but why in the world would you look forward to anything Sarah Palin has to say?! Even if for the comedic factor, there are far better stand up comedians out there you should watch, instead. The ENTIRE left needs to stop obsessing about Palin...she's an idiot. A rich idiot that struck gold while the gettin' was good...but still an idiot. Now let's move on and ignore her...the world will be better off. I hate watching people like Palin get rich off of people obsessing over her being a leader or being retarded...either way, she wins...and us middle class people LOSE. Stop making idiots like her win. Please. For the love of the world, stop it. Nothing would make the mainstream Democrats happier than to have a straight up race between Obama and Palin (or Obama and Bachmann) in 2012.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 5, 2011 -> 04:12 PM) I'm in the start now crowd. If nothing else it makes a better impression on how serious you are about the job/company. It also gets the clock ticking for benefits/vacation, etc. Well, presumably he's under 26, so under the new health care bill he can stay on his parent's insurance for some additional time. And if he's taking a 3 month vacation, vacation time might not be the concern.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Apr 5, 2011 -> 03:27 PM) Thanks everyone! As you can imagine, it's a tremendous weight off my shoulders. Now for one more question: Should I start on May 23 or August 8? Those are my options. I'm leaning towards August since that would give me a whole summer to do whatever I wanted. But, I'd also get 11 more weeks of pay if I start in May, and I'm really excited to start my job and I feel like I'll go crazy waiting 3 more months. Any suggestions? Btw, I graduate on May 13 so that would give me 10 days if I choose the May start date. Do you have a ton of money already saved up? If not, that'll make for one boring summer.
  14. I can actually take a moment to write this in detail now. It's remarkable how different the evolution is between the Cote d'Ivoire and the Libyan situation. Right now, it appears that the Ivory Coast situation is breaking the right way, the former president is supposedly negotiating a surrender after the U.N. attack and his soldiers have laid down their arms. Let's go through the list of differences. First of all...possibility of overwhelming force being brought to bear? Yes. French soldiers were on the ground. A full U.N. operation against the former president's forces would have obliterated them, if it happened. In Libya...we're totally unwilling to take that step. We're not willing to go beyond limited airstrikes. Secondly, functioning government ready to take command? There's an actual elected president sitting there. In Libya, the best we have is a council of rebels that represents at best 1/3 the population of the country, no clear leader, and no clear structure under which a transition could happen. Third...and perhaps most importantly...good chance that if the U.N. takes action things end quickly? Like I said, if the U.N. took action, they could smash the former president's forces. There's a ready transition. No possibility of a multi-week campaign where we spend time bombing whoever and debating whether to take the next step. In Libya, we've created a stalemate. For humanitarian reasons, this is the single worst possible outcome. It is now a long term, grinding civil war being fought in cities. Even if there was a massacre in Benghazi when it originally fell, that wouldn't kill as many people or displace as many refugees as a multi-week or multi-month struggle, which is exactly what we have in Libya now. In Ivory coast, the Powell Doctrine could be applied. Overwhelming force applied to the task at hand. International support. Exit strategy. You've got everything, and the former ruler's forces are breaking. In Libya, we're still bombing people, there is still fighting across the country, people are still suffering and dying in droves, and we're no where close to the endgame. I'm still a little iffy about whether or not the "Humanitarian" only justification works in Ivory Coast, but the tactics and the situation are completely different, which changes the death toll calculus by a lot.
  15. The top Democratic recruit in the race for the VA Senate seat to replace Jim Webb, former DNC Chair Tim Kaine, has announced that he will run for the seat, against former senator George (Macaca guy) Allen.
  16. QUOTE (The Baconator @ Apr 5, 2011 -> 12:40 PM) Didn't they start off to an awesome start in the first 20 or so games a couple years ago when Greinke was spitting hotfire? It started off the same way- "they'll come back to earth" but they kept playing well. Well, like everyone suspected, s*** came crashing down on them eventually. That eventuality will be realized today. The Royals were 18-11 and 3 games up in the division in early May, 2009.
  17. One other note. The Shutdown deadline is when the clock ticks over to 12:00 a.m. Saturday. The Republicans in Congress have pledged to not vote on any bills that were not displayed for 3 days prior to the vote. (Although they were happy to bypass this rule to vote on the Health Care repeal, defunding NPR, defunding Planned Parenthood, etc.). If the Republicans choose to enforce that rule regarding a budget agreement, then an agreement to avoid a shutdown must be reached by the time the clock ticks over to 12:00 a.m. tonight.
  18. Remember that mural that the governor of Maine had painted over because the labor department shouldn't give the impression of being pro-labor? Turns out the federal government paid for it. And they want their money back.
  19. That's now 4 companies that have emailed me to say that they had my email address hacked in this case. Sad thing is, this'll go down with absolutely no penalties happening for anyone. The company that lost the info is probably insured, no one will go to jail, and if anyone does have their identity legitimately stolen, it's their problem, not the company that lost it.
  20. QUOTE (ptatc @ Apr 5, 2011 -> 04:12 AM) I disagree. I love watching the pitchers duels. I tune out during slugfests and offensive explosion. I also prefer 14-10 football games with a great defensive battles. It depends on the type of pitcher's duel. If you're watching Kershaw vs. Lincecum and they're both rolling, it can be quite fun. If you're watching, I dunno, let's say the White Sox versus a soft tossing lefty who throws a sinker, well, that's not nearly as fun. Games where it looks like everything is hittable but both teams go 1/14 with RISP and half the players look like they're hung over.
  21. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 4, 2011 -> 05:30 PM) No. If there are 3 other .500 teams in the Central, the Royals won't be able to pile up enough wins to get to .500. One of the 3 big spending teams in the Central would have to implode and go for 65-70 wins. If that happened, I could see the Royals creeping into 3rd place and pushing up towards .500 at the end of the year if they're bringing pitchers along. I think a simple way to say it is "If Justin Verlander gets hurt, the Royals have a shot at being a .500 team".
