QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 21, 2010 -> 04:19 PM) I heard that he was hungover. - Jordan I mean. You don't look like that when you're hungover.

Jay Mariotti Arrested
QUOTE (IceCreamPants @ Aug 21, 2010 -> 04:09 PM) I know that much. I just thought there were more details because it seemed like others were referencing a specific incident. The LAT I believe has a policy against speaking out on the exact details of domestic violence charges (referencing the Chris Brown case). The LAT has blogged a few insider LAPD details, but that's about it.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 21, 2010 -> 03:58 PM) Next thing we'll do is second guess playing Paulie some night when he has cold symptoms and he goes 0h-fer. Phil Jackson was crazy to play Michael Jordan when he was that sick.

JIM THOME!!!!!!!!
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 21, 2010 -> 04:03 PM) If Kotsay is deemed good enough a player to start the game, you don't bat for him in the fifth inning. The issue you all have is that he shouldn't be on the team to begin with. He is on the team and you don't pinch hit for guys that early in the game. If you do, he shouldn't be playing at all. Some people want to reinvent the game. What if it was the third or fourth inning of a "critical game" and same situation. Pinch hit for Kotsay then?? Just don't play the guy at all. If he's in the lineup, he bats. So, the first mistake is playing the guy. But if you play him, you don't dare do anything about that mistake mid-game? That's just as crazy as playing him in the first place.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 21, 2010 -> 03:34 PM) Now we are complaining that our staff members are not weathermen? The ump said we were going to play ball. The second guessing is mind boggling sometimes. Well, it probably wasn't our team's fault, but you've got to admit, someone seriously screwed up.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 21, 2010 -> 03:17 PM) As much as I hate to admit this, I truly believe that with a reasonably healthy roster they're the top team in baseball. I think you're probably right...but that was a roster that they were only able to construct because a lot of the guys are either older or are regularly unhealthy.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 07:44 PM) Remember, your version of congress came in ... 2006. Hmmm. And where does spending originate? Thankfully, Tax cuts never have to be paid for and wars don't count.

Removing the Fourteenth Amendment
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 07:56 PM) So are you saying that government workers are generally smarter than private sector employees, or just your average McDonalds workers? Frankly, on average, yes, government workers are better educated than private sector employees, by a significant amount. They're also typically older, because the government doesn't hire many part-time 19 year olds.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 03:27 PM) As soon as I win the Powerball Lottery I am buying the Sox and then I will make the decisions. You all just wait! You're not going to be buying an MLB team with one Powerball win.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 07:12 PM) lol@the Red Sox. Pedroia back on the DL. Ellsbury just got put back on the DL for like the 9th time this year. Cameron out for the year. Josh Beckett is doing his best Jamie Navarro impersonation. Yeah, they're done. Sometimes the gambles pay off, and sometimes you look like the Mets.

Observations on the "State of the Sox"

White Sox Acquire Manny Ramirez
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 05:01 PM) $4M? That's less than I thought it would be. It's been about 2/3 of a month since the first deadline. There were about 2 months left in the season and we were quoted $6 million repeatedly at the time. That means 4/6 (or 2/3) are still remaining and 1/3 of the remaining time has elapsed. Thus, there is $4 million remaining because $2 million was paid out over the last 20 days.

The Twins would not be panicked if they were 4 games out
QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 05:00 PM) The Twins have also won 2 of 3 in every series against the Sox. Not true, they split a 2 game series and the Twins took 3/4 after the AS break.

Blago Trial
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 03:43 PM) Thus the question is, why did the feds not wait until after Blago actually sold the seat and took the cash? Ive got some conspiracy theories, but I doubt we will ever know the truth. Real simple. The Tribune was going to run the next morning that the Feds were wiretapping Blago. The Trib called both Blago and Fitz for comment on their story. That gave Blago time to do all the things you'd do if you weren't corrupt, like call up people who might legitimately be qualified for the Senate seat and offer it to them, and it forced Fitz to bring his case forwards and do the arrest, because the buy wouldn't go down anyway and they'd be leaving it to chance whether Blago could cover up documents and such.

Blago Trial
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 03:00 PM) I didn't follow the trial that well. Was the defense's position mainly that Blago is a moron who just talks out his ass and didn't mean it or something? I find him a funny little man. Basically yes. The defense hardly presented a case.

Putz and Bobby update from the Trib
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 12:22 PM) Its a slider, which he only throws about 5% of the time last I saw. Multiple people have suggested he throw it a bit more, and I think I agree, if he can have some decent control with it. I think the reality is, he doesn't have reliable control of it. We've seen a few games over the years where he's snapped it out and fooled hitters, but he doesn't ever seem to have confidence in throwing it for a strike. You want a lefty coming from the side with a 96 mph fastball combined with solid offspeed stuff, you're going to have to go down the list to Sale.

JIM THOME!!!!!!!!
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 12:33 PM) So you’re saying they look at things like Kotsay’s 0 hits against LHP and terrible numbers with RISP and decide to just let him bat anyway with the bases loaded against a lefty….in a critical game? Weird. That was just CGI.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 20, 2010 -> 11:42 AM) True but the fact that we've gotten anything at all done in Health Care is frankly, impressive. Nobody's done anything since LBJ. Nixon couldn't get it done, nor could Carter or Clinton. The stimulus bill did, in my opinion, keep things from being much worse than they currently are - and a second stimulus is probably needed, IMO. If you consider what has been accomplished in the first 19 months of this administration, the list of achievements is pretty long, especially when compared with other administrations, no matter what you argue the benefits or drawbacks have been. You're certainly correct on both of those. However they still shot themselves in the foot waiting on the "bipartisanship" in the Senate that was never coming, and they definitely miscalculated in not aiming for what was actually necessary on the first stimulus and letting Congress hack it downwards. Late edit: oh, and the HAMP program was an unmitigated disaster.
