  1. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 01:55 PM) In fact, he's probably going to do it at a 75% success rate, which makes him virtually useless in that regard. I flipped through some of the numbers last night...and after looking at the odds of scoring with a guy on 2nd and 0 outs compared to the odds of scoring with a guy on 1b and 0 outs and a guy on 2b and 1 out...If Pierre can steal at a 75% clip, especially with our 2-3-4 hitters coming up, I think attempting the steal there actually gives you the best chance of scoring the single run. If Pierre is in Podsednik territory on being gunned down, then that's a problem.
  2. QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 02:01 PM) Pierre has the worst arm, but I'm not convinced that he is the worst defender. TCQ seems slow out there. CQ is moving a lot better than he was last year, at least to my eyes. Although, that's not saying much.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 01:09 PM) the courts of the 60s and 70s were very liberal. It's not surprising that a moderate candidate at the time became a very liberal member of the court considering what happened after that. Here's a good piece by Cass Sunstein on that.
  4. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 01:13 PM) well Obama should be able to get a liberal pick in that case; as there are more Democrats in the Senate and the GOP is a bunch of stupid rednecks. shouldn't be too hard to outsmart a bunch of hicks, especially for a genius like Obama. Frankly, that's really my side's best hope...that Obama can nominate someone who does the exact same thing Roberts did except from the other side. Because in an election year, with the Republican base already fired up, if the Republicans can hold together 41 votes for a filibuster of a justice, that's a huge fundraiser for them.
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 01:09 PM) Konerko and Jones, as Quentin will get intentionally walked nearly every time in that situation. And as soon as you bunt with Beckham to get Pierre to 2nd...the right move becomes to give Q nothing to hit and to try to walk him, because Konerko is an easy GIDP with his wheels, if you can keep the ball down.
  6. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 01:08 PM) points 1 and 3 contradict themselves The Senate wasn't the ones doing the vetting. The Bush Administration knew exactly what they were getting with that Chief Justice; a guy who would make Scalia and Thomas look like cowards. He just was smarter than the Senate in his confirmation hearings. Which is probably not as hard as we'd like to think.
  7. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 01:04 PM) the sad thing is I doubt you can comprehend that it's difficult to tell what a judges ideological spectrum will be on the supreme court until they have served for a while. It's also sad that you don't even realize a Republican put Stevens on the court. Point 1: Yeah, like Justice Roberts, who really did a show with that "I'm a centrist" and "I respect precedent" thing in his confirmation. Point 2: Yeah, Stevens started in 1975. Doesn't mean he wasn't by far the most liberal member of the court. Point 3: If you think that nothing has changed since the 1980's in the vetting of these candidates to make sure that a Republican isn't appointing a Democrat or vice-versa...you're simply wrong.
  8. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 07:09 AM) The bigger issue is you can't cut taxes and then increase your spending by 10%. That obviously doesn't work. But it's been proven over and over that the revenues received goes higher when taxes are cut. It's just Congress is so stupid about it that we're left the other way. So...it couldn't be that revenues are going higher because the government running a deficit in a time of low inflation is a stimulative measure (regardless of whether it achieves that deficit through tax cuts or wars)? I know you'll still disagree, but I'd also point out that after the Bush tax cuts, tax receipts didn't recover to pre-cut levels until the peak of the bubble...which was in itself, in part I'd argue, related to the wealth concentrating effects of cutting the top level tax rate.
  9. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 12:31 PM) he'll get a liberal to replace him. for sure. just like the 'wise latina' The sad thing is...somehow I doubt you see the difference between Sotomayor and Stevens on the ideological spectrum.
  10. This is almost certain to continue the movement of the court towards the right.
  11. The Trib confirmed Nunez moving to the rotation today.
  12. I haven't even gotten to it yet, but will at some point today...Prof. Krugman has a long NYT Magazine piece on the economics behind carbon markets available online and in print this weekend. Honestly, I'm sticking this here so I know where to find the link.
  13. From the "It worked so well for Lehman Brothers that everyone should get into the act!" file.
  14. Jon Scheyer put up a twitter post after the win saying "holler at me..." with an actual phone number in it. Turns out its the phone number of a guy he played with in high school. That guy has now received over 2000 messages and several hundred calls.
  15. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 02:15 AM) I'm not sure why Tiger is supposed to change his demeanor on the course. I never personally had a problem with that, he's an athlete who gets frusterated when he screws up. Who doesn't get frusterated and curse (or at least really want to) when they screw up? That's a completely seperate issue to the cheating. Well, he needs to stop with the 17th green quickie he's gotten used to. Anyway, Go Tom Watson!
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 12:01 AM) My eyes say you tell lies. If Pierre was as fast as he used to be, you wouldn't worry about bunting him to 2b.
  17. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 12:00 AM) Pierre is visibly slower than he used to be. Beckham only has decent speed. Jones/Kostay? You serious? Rios and Ramirez I'll give you. But at the same time, you have to get on base. And really? You counter with Hafner and Redmond? Yeah, Hafner and the C spot and LaPorta sort of balance out the slow guys in our lineup, woudln't you say? Is Hafter really faster than Konerko?
  18. QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 9, 2010 -> 12:00 AM) How did that one not get out of here? IT's 35 degrees.
  19. And that's why they wouldn't have bunted with their #2 hitter.
  20. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 11:57 PM) Choo, Brantley, Sizemore, Valbuena > White Sox Pierre, Beckham, Jones/Kotsay, Rios, Ramirez? That's 5 spots that can genuinely run. Quentin can score from 1st on a double while healthy. I have no clue on Teahen. Konerko and Pierzynski are slow, but come on, Hafner? Redmond/The other guy?
  21. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Apr 8, 2010 -> 11:55 PM) We're really going to need Linebrink to come through for us in the 13th inning. No need to worry about that.
