QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 09:27 PM) How many girls attempting to get an education didn't have acid thrown on them by the Taliban? In my view, there are very few situations so bad that humanitarian war makes sense. Stopping the Khmer Rouge, something like that level. I could easily respond to you by asking how many lives could have been saved if the money that is paying for this week's offensive was put into buying Mosquito Nets and providing anti-retroviral drugs in Africa. Or providing health care for 15% of Americans. I can still believe there is a legitimate strategic reason for our presence in Afghanistan. I think the captures this week in Pakistan are part of that. But don't tell me you're killing people to make them free.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 08:59 PM) Now that it's obvious that we aren't going to make it better, I'll admit some skepticism too, but really, this hasn't exactly been a bad week.

Olympics: Vancouver 2010 OFFICIAL THREAD
Balta1701 replied to Steve9347's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Wow that "sending skiiers down the slope rapidly because of the conditions" really screwed over Mancuso. -
QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 08:41 PM) Not to mention there are genuine health risks such as infections, HIV...etc. Can you give me a single example of anyone ever getting HIV from a blood test for steroids? Especially at the professional athlete level? How many olympians, cyclists, etc., have gone through them without that issue? Compared to heavy abuse of HGH, for example?

Harry Reid has realized his job is in jeopardy.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 04:22 PM) yup In other words, we don't lose him if we send him to the minors to start the season and give Santos a tryout.

QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 01:47 PM) Anyone saying Pierre is batting 9th..it's just their opinion. Obviously, he'll be batting leadoff all year. No he won't. Vizquel will get a lot of at bats there. Just because Vizquel is going to get a lot of at bats.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 03:25 PM) He can if its not per se prevented in a valid, legal contract. None of us really know exactly what that contract says. And furthermore, I believe the current overriding contract for the league is expiring after this season, right? I'd be this is something that changes, at that time. Frankly, I think that at this point, collective bargaining agreements are a satisfactory way of dealing with it. If Selig had in 2001 chosen to use that power, that would have been the right point. As of now, he's set the precedent that the best interests of the game power is very sparingly used, and that collective bargaining can deal with this issue. Of course, if that's unsatisfactory, just replace him with Senator McConnell, and suddenly that sparingly used power will be used to ban baseball players from chewing gum or throwing anything but fastballs. Versus RH Pierre Beckham Quentin Pierzynski Konerko Kotsay Rios Teahen Ramirez Against LH: Vizquel Beckham Quentin Konerko Pierzynski Jones Rios Teahen Ramirez (note, not what I want to see happen, what I think will happen. Vizquel will be a near full-time leadoff man against LHP. Ozzie will do all he can to break up his RH/LH hitters against RHP.)

Oh goodie, another contentious CBA issue for the NFL. Go owners. Push that one hard. You have my support.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 01:11 PM) I was referring to soxtalk members. He was cited on several response posts for the "best/favorite politician" thread...or whatever it was called. And if the media loves someone and declares them the best thing since sliced centrism, there will always be a few people who will listen.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 10:49 AM) Now if only Selig would man up and force tests at the major league level. I think the issue is...he can't do that on his own because that is collectively bargained issue, while he may well be able to do that for the minor league teams.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 12:32 PM) Still trying to figure out why he's so widely respected on this forum. Because it takes the media 5 minutes to decide they like someone and then 30 years to forget that they do.

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 10:50 AM) Havent read the thread through, but quick question. If Jones indeed has most of his agility back, shouldnt there be days that Pierre DHes? Jones/Rios/CQ in the outfield has some serious cannonage. That would cost Viquel at-bats though.

QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 06:19 PM) I like the idea, unless they structure the bid where the contractor has to use union labor. I do not need a f***ing electrician to plug in my lamp at a trade show. Have them inspect the booths, that's fine with me, but I was so pissed when they made me hire a union electrician to plug in a light. You'd have been more pissed when the guy 100 rows down screwed up plugging in that lamp and burned the whole place to the ground. -

How do you feel about the Designated Hitter?
Balta1701 replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 05:10 PM) I agree, and the whole strategy in pinch hitting or double switching is why I prefer no-DH. And you have also pitchers like Zambrano and Owings that give you an advantage. Just some of those pitchers are so damn bad at hitting, it frustrates me. So, you're saying you like it when the 9th guy in the order is able to hit? Maybe if you replaced him with a full time hitter, someone designated to do that job. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 04:28 PM) The Cubs will never, ever, move out of Wrigleyville. I don't understand why people still think this could happen. the Cubs live and die with that field, in that neighborhood. Moving the suburbs makes no sense for them under any circumstances. I don't know how it'll go down, but that stadium isn't going to last forever, and the price of legit restoration of a historic building in the middle of a city is going to be huge. Just bringing it up to code.
