  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 05:55 PM) Man I don't know if I can disprove such detailed evidence... Usually you guys get quite frustrated when I back up my statements, so I figured to go with your more classic "Ad hominem" style of posting.
  2. QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 04:57 PM) Chicago gets like a foot of snow at one time pretty routinely and it takes a lot of snow for people to actually change their plans and/or stop what they're doing so I really have to laugh at the people that live here every year when they go out and form long lines at the grocery store when there is 3 inches of snow in the forecast and they cancel school before the snow actually falls. But 2 1/2 feet is a lot of snow for anybody, I don't care where you live, you can't just go about your life getting around as if there was NOT 2 1/2 feet of snow on the ground just because you see it more often. I've been somewhat amazed at the sheer duration of the school cancellations here after it snowed last Friday-Saturday. Schools were still being canceled a full week later.
  3. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 05:48 PM) Wouldn´t it stand to reason he would actually increase his HR production at the Cell even slightly, especially to Right Field? He hit 40 home runs last year, only 12 at home. There were at least 7 warning track doubles in Petco last year he hit, some of which would be likely to depart another ballpark. But you never know of course; a guy can also wind up changing his hitting style and hurting his production as well.
  4. QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 04:52 PM) You people act like I didn't grow up in Chicago. You didn't start the thread.
  5. Having grown up SE of Chicago in lake-effect country, I can't help but look and really not feel all that impressed. Like trying to impress a person from Buffalo.
  6. QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 04:33 PM) Why would he want to go to Boston? His oppo HRs would turn into doubles. But a lot of those 7 doubles off of or close to the RF wall in Petco would be departing.

  8. Mariners officially ink Bedard. 1 year deal.
  9. QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 02:21 PM) Just because they have worked together and know each other too well does not mean an automatic guarantee Epstein will land AGon. A slight advantage maybe but I say you never know in MLB. Frankly, if we want to deal for him, several things are going to need to happen. Hudson's going to have to keep stepping up all year. Perhaps Mitchell also. And we're going to have to have our primed-to-fail DH situation fail. And we're going to have to have everything else on our team succeeding.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 03:43 PM) And what specific things I am leaving out? Anything that might make Wall Street look bad or the President look good.
  11. QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 02:19 PM) I am a Phoenix. So you're saying I can light you on fire?
  12. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 01:45 PM) As much as it pains me to say this, I bet Adrian Gonzalez does end up with the red sox. We'll just have to hope that Viciedo or Flowers turns out to be a big bat like that in a year of 2 when they make it up here... Even if we did trade for him, he'd probably be playing for the BoSox in 2012 anyway.
  13. According to the remnants of Editor & Publisher (who now blog), the Reuters employee who wrote this article is no longer with that company (not sure if it was a firing or not)
  14. Toyota preparing a recall on the Prius breaks for this week.
  15. A few "Sit-down meetings" with lobbyists = Tens of billions of free dollars to the banking industry. A $40 billion subsidy to the banks that earns the government absolutely no benefits every year. Sounds like something we ought to expand, right?
  16. I was avoiding watching that Super Bowl halftime because CBS was refusing to air a fairly mundane ad from Moveon.org. Fits in well with this year's story.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 6, 2010 -> 12:11 AM) Like I said, you completely do not understand what is being talked about here. When people talk about someone moving a market, there is nothing to do with a trend here. It is a momentary reaction to words being stated. The fact that you came up with this mess tells me that you don't understand the differences between market timing and trends. Its not a day, not a week, not a month, not a year. It is immediate. The President says something, and the markets go a direction. THAT is what is being talked about. Seeing as how I spent years in actual trading crowds, and you just get to read about that stuff on HuffPo, I think I understand a little better what is being talked about there. And yet you're only willing to accept specific things as market-movers when they make your side feel correct. And you're also still under the illusion that what is good for the stock market is good for the country 100% of the time.
  18. QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 05:17 PM) The Colts are probably a 6-10 team without Manning. Well, they'd have been drafting pretty highly for the last decade without him, so who knows.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 06:01 PM) Only if you are missing Kap's point. So, let's see, which argument as to why that's stupid do I get to make? 1. The markets aren't the economy. The banks aren't the economy. They reflect it, but to base decisions on what is good for single-week stock market returns is ludicrous. 2. The banks aren't lending anyway. They're driving themselves into negative territory to pay out bonuses rather than lending. 3. Clearly, taking money away from the people who caused the bubble in the first place is a horrible thing. 4. It's frighteningly amazing how when the stock market falls in Obama's first month, it's 100% his fault. When the stock market rises 50% in the next year, none of the credit goes to Obama. But, Obama talks again on the banks this month...OH GOD WATCH OUT BELOW IT'S ALL HIS FAULT! 5. That whole correlation - causation thing. 6. It's an obvious asset bubble anyway. 7. Clearly, what you're arguing is that the more money the banks have, the more the market goes up, and the better we all are. Bail them out again!
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 05:59 PM) Once it was announced that he was going to clear cloture, the markets rallied. And then he was approved and look what happened this week. It makes as much sense as Kap's point. And has exactly as much relevance to anything.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 05:55 PM) Actually they started the sell off before that, in response to his potentially not getting reapproved. So he's not approved, the markets drop, he is approved, the markets drop. I believe Bernanke's existence therefore makes the markets drop.

    wtf taxes

Did your withholding amounts change? Last year the stimulus included a large tax cut and Geithner sent out orders in April or so that the Treasury should reduce the amount withheld from people's checks by an appropriate amount.
  23. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 02:55 PM) I love the fact that this selloff started the MINUTE Barackus the Great gave his wonderful speech about how f***ing retarded (to coin a phrase) the banks are and he "will make them pay". Let's all remember that. So, did y'all also notice how Bernanke's approval by the Senate also coincided with this downturn in the stock market? I blame him.
  24. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 03:51 PM) Well to be fair, if Rios or Alexei is #2 and Beckham is hitting 3rd/5th, I wouldn't mind it at all. I actually like Alexei and Rios up there if they can get on base, but Beckham right now is the perfect candidate. I will throw a hissy fit if I see .317 OBP A.J. Pierzynski hitting up there though. All of this will be moot though if Pierre doesn't get on base consistently. God, what I would do to get Denard Span on our team. The good news is...AJ and Pierre are both lefties, so the odds of Ozzie hitting them back to back is low. However, when Pierre gets hurt and Vizquel takes over the full time DH duties...
