  1. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 09:20 AM) No mention of the confiscated Lebron tape eh? ?
  2. QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 09:16 AM) It was at this point a month and a half ago. They need to get a left fielder for this year and for the future. CQ will move to right. I've decided that is the 1 position I want us to spend money on this offseason; 1 corner OF. Could be JD for 1 more year.
  3. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 09:09 AM) Flowers is just a monster, ops up to .970. I'm interested to see where he'll be rated when another top 100 prospects list comes out. If they think he'll stick at catcher, top 25. If they don't, top 100.
  4. QUOTE (T R U @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 01:43 AM) Eh I don't believe that Well, frankly, unless you have better information than we do, I see no reason to either believe or disbelieve it.
  5. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 08:52 AM) One has nothing to do with the other. You can be a person that's for cleaning up the environment without being a "global warming" person. CO2 emmissions is one of the most overrated bulls*** topics ever. And that's a statement made with a large helping of ignorance of reality.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 08:46 AM) So what exactly happens to all of the people who are here illegally? Everyone has already said they won't get sent back, because we can't do that. If you make them citizens, you can't keep them out of the social programs, can you? Especially because as a group, the illegals from Mexico tend to be really poor, and would need the programs a lot more than normal. Quite frankly, paying that cost is the cost for not having fixed the immigration system 3 decades ago. You may not like it, but the situation as it is now is simply untenable, and there is no free way out of it. "Getting rid of them all" costs a fortune. Any sort of guest worker program costs a fortune. Any sort of legalization costs a fortune. Any sort of amnesty costs a fortune. The right way to do it was to fix the system 30 years ago, 20 years ago, 10 years ago, 5 years ago, whatever.
  7. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 08:54 AM) You're right - I was thinking it was some sort of treaty. You actually have a point here, this is a major constitutional issue that has never been resolved. The President is commander in chief of the military and hence can order the military to do things like dismantle nuclear weapons, invade countries, move equipment around, and doesn't necessarily need Congressional approval to do it. But at the same time, when does he cross the boundary between his commander in chief powers and the requirement that treaties are submitted to the Senate? It's never been decided. The first example of this I really know of is the Atlantic Charter; the agreement between Churchill and FDR in 1941 outlining the goals of the "allied" side for the war and sending a good chunk of U.S. military equipment to Britain. Based on previous standards it probably should have been submitted to the Senate as a treaty, but the isolationist Senate never would have passed it, so FDR just did it as an agreement between 2 heads of state, and seemingly never actually put anything in writing so that there was nothing to submit. At some point, Congress really ought to write some law regarding this and the Supreme Court ought to settle it, but that would require Congress stepping up and enforcing its power, which it hasn't been wont to do in decades.
  8. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 08:17 PM) I can see that. Great point. If you get the tickets for free, it's go for broke on all the food, beers, shirts, hats, etc., especially if you get a parking pass too. My dad used to on occasion get stadium club passes at the same time as he got tickets via one of his friends. That was worth the money.
  9. QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 07:31 PM) Looks like Iverson might be headed to Miami. Fantastic move, you can get Iverson to mentor players with questionable maturity like Chalmers, and Beasley, take time away from the 21 year old SG DQ Cook, and possibly push Wade into an undersized SF role. This will surely push the Heat deep into the playoffs. I'm just so excited. How certain is that? Last I heard there was a reasonably good shot he winds up in Memphis as well (puts butts in the seats, 1 year deal, he can work his tail off and try to hit FA with a better reputation next year)
  10. QUOTE (T R U @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 07:45 PM) He turned himself white, he married white, and his kids are white.. I dunno It could be he was actually sick.
  11. QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 06:40 PM) Tax and kill? That's just silly Kap. Cap and trade so far has not really worked at cutting greenhouse gas emissions. But these s***ty plans certainly haven't had much negative effect on economies. Are you certain about that? Because the European system is actually producing some pretty substantial cuts with a system that started off even weaker than the one we're working to pass.
  12. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 05:31 PM) i wish beckham was protecting kong instead of nix Well, Nix drove it to the track.
  13. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 04:56 PM) Someone mentioned Hitler a page ago. Hitler was probably the most evil person in the history of the world, but at least he didn't molest children. If he had, would we necessarily know about it?
  14. Marion to the Mavericks in at least a 3 team sign and trade deal is closing in on happening.
  15. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 03:35 PM) edited for stupidity Did you reply in the wrong thread? How did you pull that one off?
  16. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 03:03 PM) Isn't that skewed a bit by Interleague play though? Yeah, that's a good chunk of the reason why. He's just had an awful lot of offtime lately.
  17. Jim Thome has only started/played 11 full games since June 12th.
  18. QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 02:01 PM) I dont see why any team wouldnt take a flier. It's like when they cut Thomas and he went to Oakland for the minimum. What is the risk? And whats the reward? The risk is he sucks and you cut him. The reward is you have a dominant lefty closer throwing middle relief and setting up. Unless he has serious arm trouble I'd imagine someone will offer more than the league minimum.
  19. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 12:59 PM) Pass some of that crack. I need it. Sensu Stricto, wealth is everything that there is in the economy. Investments, things you own, bridges, roads, etc. If the government produces a product like a road, and at the same time produces a return on investment for the person who invested in the government, and at the same time employs people to repair that road, and the road (or whatever) that the government produced serves a public good the government is creating wealth. The issue is in how wealth is defined. If you define wealth in such a way that only private goods count, then of course government actions don't matter. Another way of writing it would be to go back to Keynes and say that government spending in these circumstances is the only way to get out of the paradox of thrift; where wealth is destroyed because the rational economic decision for everyone is to try to save.
