  1. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 08:59 AM) Garland's value is low because he has one year left on his deal, period, because teams do understand that Garland is a pretty average starting pitcher, and ths quite a bit of value in the game of baseball. If you allow the team you trade Garland to negotiate an extension, his value goes up, but then you are playing a coin-flip scenario because Garland may not accept their offer and you've already burned the bridge. The only thing I'm going to say in response to this is Jason Jennings.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 07:07 AM) Too bad these guys won't get blacklisted... I'd love to say that Selig will take some steps when the Mitchell report comes out and names names. I just don't have enough confidence to say that for sure though.
  3. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 08:48 AM) How do you figure Greene is a significantly better hitter than Wilson? I'm not a huge stats guy, but Wilson is a career .269 hitter, trending up. Greene is .254 for his career. Their walk rate is basically the same. Greene strikes out a ton more than Wilson. Their career on base % is identical. Holy crap, I just looked, and he's actually right. Greene's OPS last year was .759, and his career best is .795. Wilson put up a .790 last year, and has a career high of .794. Greene has kept his above .700 most years, and yeah there's the Petco difference, but yowza. Greene did put up a .841 away from Petco last year, which is something, but the quesiton is how much you trust home/away splits to determine what a guy will do when you move him.
  4. QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 07:43 PM) So many ready to light the fire under Bonds... yet Palmerio, "Let me start by telling you this: I have never used steroids, period.", who definitely and knowingly used them has all but been forgotten about. Is his 500hr/3000hit record going to have a "*" next to it? Should it? When it comes time for his name to go on the ballot will all the Bonds screamers also be yelling for Raffy's "record" - a record that only 3 others in all of baseball have - to have a "cheater" label next to it? No, we won't be yelling for that at all. We'll be lauging about the 3% of the vote he pulls in despite those accomplishments.
  5. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 07:43 PM) I also wonder if there had been message boards around when Frank Thomas was 24 and getting fat if fans from other teams would have been against trading for him because he would be a 1B or DH. The economics of the game have changed an Awful lot since those days.
  6. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 07:08 PM) Well it really makes no sense for us to target him until he hits FA, as we have Fields ready to step in at 3B if Crede's dealt. He'd be a perfect 1B/DH replacement for Jim Thome once Thome's ready to retire in a couple of seasons. My issues with that; we already have 2 guys who could be DH's when 2 years from now comes around in Dye and Konerko. and they're both already under contract. And I don't really like the concept of signing young guys to DH, because it seems to be much easier and much cheaper to pick up an older guy with some youth coming in behind him as a DH or to move your own guys there than it is to spend big money on a DH.
  7. QUOTE(spiderman @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 06:44 PM) He's owed $26 million over the next 2 seasons. I don't think the White Sox take him unless Baltimore throws about 8 million into a deal. With where we are in terms of total salary...I don't think that the price would be nearly as big of a deal as the guys we'd have to give up in order to get him from Baltimore.
  8. QUOTE(spiderman @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 06:35 PM) Tejada is clearly on the block in Baltimore, but the Orioles would have to pick up a ton of $$$ for the White Sox to acquire him. Why? With the inflation in contracts lately, his contract has gone from being relatively expensive at the time he was signed to relatively cheap for the numbers he puts up. Money doesn't strike me as being the best reason not to go after Tejada; i can think of quite a few better ones.
  9. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 06:19 PM) No I don't think it would be the best idea to acquire Miggy for some of the reasons above, but I'm just outlining what it would probably take to get a deal done from our end if we were to make such a move. Ok, good...had me worried there for a while.

    Pet peeves....

QUOTE(Brian @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 05:59 PM) There is this guy who comes into my work and everytime he says HI to me he winks. It's very annoying for some reason. Your signature is just giving his eye some issues.
  11. QUOTE(bmags @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 06:10 PM) Can I ask where this talk of him only being above average defensively is coming from? Did he slow down quite a bit or something? Are we still referring to Hunter? I think there's been a general impression for a while that Hunter is a good CF but is not the enemy of every ball ever hit in CF. I think i've heard and seen suggestions that he does a dynamite job on the spectacular plays but doesn't always get great jumps or cover the ground that you'd want from a guy who wins the GG every year. Just looking at the easily referenced stats, his ZR/RF haven't really shown declines yet despite his age, which is a good sign (although his defensive numbers show so far a clear peak in 2003 and a clear valley in 2006)...but those same numbers aren't really dominant in the league. Comes in at #9 in RF, #7 in ZR. Quite good, but we shouldn't pretend that guys like Sizemore, Crisp, Suzuki, Beltran, etc. aren't putting up numbers above his.
  12. QUOTE(bigruss22 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 05:48 PM) I wouldnt give too much more than Anderson for Hall, maybe a c prospect or so, since our system is so bare and we need to add to it not trade away the few pieces we have It would be a deal that would fit both teams. The Brewers pick up some points on defense in the OF, maybe get some cover for if they want to move Braun into LF rapidly, and dump most of Hall's contract. The problem of course...that Tony Gwynn kid might well do for the Brewers exactly the job Anderson would do.
  13. QUOTE(bigruss22 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 05:53 PM) Hu please. Just so Hawk can say Hu's on first. But really I think he is going to be a special player but one who may cost too much for the Sox to acquire. I think the bigger issue with a guy like Hu is that its probably going to take the Dodgers a long time to sort out their season, because it's going to be weeks at least before the ARod derby ends, and they won't want to move any of Hu, Furcal, or Laroche, unless it's a really good deal for them, until they know they're out of that race. And I really doubt KW is in a patient mood this offseason.
  14. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 05:19 PM) If this is Miggy we're talking about, then I would assume then Marlins would then trade Garland to the Mariners or Dodgers and try to get some of their premium prospects so it'd have to be a 3 team deal. And we'd probably have to give up one of ours as well. Gio Gonzalez perhaps? Give Ozzie Guillen enough 3rd basemen and he'll rule the world!
  15. QUOTE(SEALgep @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 04:16 PM) You have to wonder what kind of package the Marlins would want, and whether the Yankees can pony it up. They have the talent, but I'm pretty certain they're going to be holding tight to their young pitching. You never know though, guys like Cabrera and Arod only become available every so often. I can't possibly imagine it being less than 2 of the Yankees big 3 pitchers and an additional player. If the FA Pitcher market was a little better this season, then I might see the Yankees making a deal for a guy like that, because they could attempt to buy another pitcher to fill that role. But right now, what guy out there might interest them? Silva? Schilling?
  16. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 09:32 AM) They wouldn't have been carrying them either. You don't use tactical nukes defensively, only strategically, so... why bring them if you aren't using them? The claim simply makes no sense. Because the Syrians could have shot down our plane, recovered the bomb, and then we could proclaim without lying that Syria has nuclear weapons and must be stopped. Do I need green?
  17. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 09:31 AM) I could also live with that lineup. Its just Crede instead of Jenkins basically - the trade off comes down to, do you want defensive weakness at 3B or LF? And personally, I'd prefer the weakness in LF to 3rd base.
  18. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 09:22 AM) I agree, but I still think you need to have another OF in the mix. I'd love to see a Garland for Furcal+ deal, trade Crede for someone like Betemit if you can, and sign Jenkins to play LF (moving Fields back to 3B). I'd also like to see Bourgeois make the team as the back middle IF and CF, and challenge Richar for the starting 2B slot. So your lineup becomes: Right now, I'll live with an OF of Fields, Owens, Dye, if Crede is at 3rd base and actually healthy. We've got a small, non-difficult OF, that won't be the thing that kills us, esp. with the way our pitchers tend to produce ground balls. I'm far more interested in that IF defense, which would look like Crede, Fields, Richar, Konerko, which to me looks really good. But of course, if a deal where Mr. Crede goes somewhere and actually nets us something is available, we have to take it since he'd be walking next year no matter what, and then we do need 1 more OF. If we do hold onto Crede, I think it's going to be just as easy to find a LF next offseason as this one.
  19. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 09:07 AM) She didn't give a straight answer all night, and Edwards and Obama would immediately jump on it. At one point she contradicted her own stance on the illegal immigrants getting driver's license thing. She looked bad, distant and aloof.... and gave the field the opening they were waiting for. At least from the Text, Obama seems to have nailed one this morning on the Today Show.
  20. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 08:41 AM) I find it highly unlikely that US planes were involved, or that a nuclear device was used by either the US or Israel. Those would be idiotic decisions. I am sure the US probably helped support the mission, but not the aircraft. And I agree, this was a good move. If a nuclear weapon had been used somewhere in the world, it would be well known by everyone. Hell, there are people down the hall from me who'd be measuring the results in the air.
  21. QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 07:15 AM) Who's the FA SS that you would lavish all this big bundle of money on ? Eckstein or Vizquel ? I want a Furcal/Hu for Garland swap. If you don't think that's even...then make it even by having the Dodgers include some of the money if they send along Furcal or stick in a minor league pitcher or something. If we put Owens in the OF next year, a top of the order of Owens, Furcal, Thome, Konerko, Dye, Fields, and so on looks incredibly good to me. Even if Furcal has a down year, you've still got good OBP and great speed in front of Jim, you've got L/R balance (because Furcal hits lefties quite well). It fills that SS hole, keeps solid IF defense, clears a starting rotation spot, and if we're smart sets us up with a SS for a couple years (because hopefully we'd take a stab at signing him). At worst, it sets us up for 08 at that spot.
  22. And yet, when I posted what I think is the same study in another thread, it hardly got noticed, because the results were analyzed a bit differently.
