  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 02:47 PM) I agree with this and wish the standards really were that low. For my two cents, the corruption standards are a lot like the police brutality standards where the bar to prove something keeps getting moved to where it is nearly impossible to convict someone of corruption, yet Blago sits and rots. Don't feel bad about him sitting and rotting, feel bad for the rest of the country sitting and rotting as it becomes easier and easier to own a politician.
  2. Maybe we should just have Vin Diesel not play XXX any more and instead play a tree all the time. Which would you prefer to see anyway, some guy with 3 X's tattooed on his neck fighting King Kong or a talking tree that only says 3 words fighting King Kong?
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 01:17 PM) Bob Menendez case ending in mistrial. Basically bribery is legal now. Blago case almost assuredly could not have led to conviction under these new standards. The good news is that it did not cost 20 million Americans health care coverage. So yeah, Supreme Court, you legalized bribery but it kept people insured! This still sucks.
  4. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 01:18 PM) I don't think this matters much. If a woman likes sex that doesn't mean she consents to all sex. That's basically your analogy there. Also, with the way this has all gone, in the court of public opinion, there is no innocent until proven guilty. If someone makes a claim, we believe it and then respond accordingly. Frankly, you can't exactly say "I'm innocent of this and they made it up" when they also have that photo. And then throw in any corroborating statement from a boyfriend/spouse about "They told me at the time", and it's not "no innocent until proven guilty", it's "ewwww WTF were you doing you jagoff go away".
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 12:58 PM) She was a pretty famous lingerie/fitness model who eventually became a Playboy model and actress... She has made appearances as a politically conservative commentator on such Fox News shows as 'Hannity' and 'Red Eye'. [5][6] wikipedia So the defense is going to be that it’s a political hit job and 2) that photo was taken jokingly with lots and lots of people around on the plane, so very poor taste/trying to be funny in an inappropriate way vs. a “fireable offense.” Of course, Franken was better known for being a comedian/book writer than politician at that point. My sense is that this gives Trump and Moore some political cover (both sides are guilty!!!) and there’s going to be tremendous pressure to resign from the Democratic Party despite his high popularity. It's not just a photo, there's an article to go with it. The article includes the "Ewwwww".
  6. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 01:49 PM) Nick Burdi has value though. The Twins almost got Jamie Garcia for him (while injured) this past deadline, but the Burdi portion of the deal fell through due to medicals. I think they'll trade him before they remove him from the 40 man. So trade injured Burdi for injured Burdi and 2 Burdis meet Steve Stone. See how awful this is?
  7. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 01:10 PM) Let's keep it going with the 100+ mph guys! If they don't protect him, I say we go after Nick Burdi on the Twins in the rule 5 draft. He is injured and will probably be out for the year, so you don't even have to waste the spot on the roster this year, just get him ready to be on the big league club in 2019. No thank you. For no other reason than having 2 pitchers who throw 100 mph and who are injured and named Burdi is literally too much for me to process. No. I can't do it.
  8. Zorro films could draw you out.
  9. Can the minority lead expulsion of a Senator? I'm sure the Majority can, but who has to bring it to the floor?
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 11:20 AM) I would. I don't think that would be a particularly hard contract to get rid of. Next question on the list - could we get anything of value for either of our catchers if we traded them to someone to be a backup?
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 11:05 AM) Lucroy though went from one of the best framing catchers in the league to one of the worst. But, if he has a rep for handling pitching staff well then I'm okay with that too. Still really like my stupid idea for caleb joseph, but he's also like the perfect backup catcher as you bring up Sisco. Would people go 3/$36 for Lucroy? I'm kinda guessing here but the Denver Post a couple weeks ago referred to him as getting "more money than Jason Castro signed". That seems like they'd be in the 3 year deal range and going from 8 to 12 million fits that he's performed better.
  12. QUOTE (oldsox @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 09:06 AM) Out of the four big trades Sox made (Red Sox, Nats, Cubs, Yanks), the Cub trade looks the best right now. Only because Kopech and Moncada aren't playing right now.
  13. QUOTE (Soxnfins @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 08:51 AM) I’d be down with Lucroy. Always been a fan of his since Milwaukee. I’d be ok with a Matt Winters-esque deal for him. 2y/21m, second year being a 10.5M team option. Lucroy has been a substantially better catcher than Wieters was before they hit FA. Both of them were 1 WAR players the year before FA, but Lucroy was a 4 win player just 2 seasons ago while Weiters has been a 1 WAR a year player for 4 years. He's got to get a better deal than Weiters. Either shorter "prove you're still a 4 win player" money or longer or more a year or something.
  14. Sale is closing in on the leadership for most Cy Young award points won without having won the award.
  15. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 08:07 PM) The Sox aren't making the playoffs, they're going to be as bad as they were this past season If they hold Abreu and Garcia I think there's a good chance they're moderately better. Jiminez looks like he's going to be a monster. Moncada may struggle some but he's here for a full year and that's going to improve offense right there. Hopefully Anderson's troubles are past him and he's a better player. The catchers are decent and could continue getting better. Lopez and Giolito and Fulmer is at least more promising than anything we had in our rotation last year, and we're already used to Rodon being missing. The only part right now that is clearly worse is the bullpen, but you have 100% got to expect we'll bring in some people there, if for no reason other than to try to find the next Kahnle and Swarzak. They trade those 2 and yeah, there's 2 key positions where we're now substantially worse, balancing out the ones where we should expect some improvement.
  16. All right folks, this is a first call to "Break it up" before things escalate. Heated is fine, personal attack limit is getting pushed.
  17. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 07:46 PM) Totally agree. I think Avi will be dealt after some of the big bats are signed/traded ala Stanton and Martinez. With as many teams as were mentioned as plausibly considering an OF, Stanton, Martinez, and Jay Bruce are the only guys who played nearly-full seasons and who are corner OFs. There are some other guys like Howie Kendrick, Austin Jackson, and Daniel Nava who had decent seasons in part-time roles, but yeah - there should be more demand than supply.
  18. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 06:36 PM) Sounds like Johnson from Wisconsin is a no as the bill stands. Maybe people are starting to see how terrible all of this is. I hate playing this game with my health care backup plan.
  19. QUOTE (Tony @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 07:13 PM) I guess the question would be...What's the upside? What's the best case scenario here? He didn't pitch at all in 2017, and in 2016 he was BAD...in the NL....In San Fran. I know he'll come cheap, but what are the odds he has enough value in July to spin him for something? I mean that's the main reason you're signing him, right? Again, just don't see the upside in that type of move. I'd offer him a million dollars and throw him in the bullpen out of ST, how's that? Think he's going to be game for that?
  20. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 06:48 PM) I'd rather they give those innings to a young guy who could possibly figure things out in the majors and become an asset. We might get lucky. Plus I doubt Peavy would want to come back here. It's cold and dreary and he's a southern/California guy. I still think "the best starter we can find" is a perfect rule 5 draft pick.
  21. QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 06:23 PM) My thoughts are that Rodon won’t be ready at the outset of the season and fulmer will likely fall to a bullpen role. Sprinkle in a few injuries and kopech not up til later in the year? I think signing a better version of holland makes a whole bunch of sense. Peavy had a 5.54 ERA in 2016 as a 35 year old pitching in San Francisco. If he's a better version of Holland it's just luck.
