Anyone know the numbers currently for Thome's option to vest? I.E. his plate appearances thus far, what he needs, and projection on games to be played.

Manny's just playing the Red Sox so they don't pick up his option. He wants a long term deal, and he switched his agent to Boras this season to get him one.

Also, I think the confusion lies in that he had been injured for a while. They new he wouldn't be playing so, so they knew going in they would need an additional player. The situation you are thinking about that would have Dye being added would be if someone got injured after the roster was finalized.
