Anyone know of any good movies based on myth/lore? I realized that some of the movies I've seen recently that I really liked (Trollhunter, Beowulf, Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark) are based on these things.

2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
Milkman delivers replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
What was the DVD of the Sox World Series that was narrated by Michael Clarke Duncan? I have my Sox Pride DVD and the set of all of the World Series games, but I'm not sure where that one is. -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 12:56 PM) I'll be watching the Sox Pride DVD later. Done.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 03:59 PM) You don't think the Sox would eat a portion of that to save some money? They've shown a willingness to do exactly that in the past with guys who are free agents at the end of the year (Thome, Iguchi come immediately to mind). They obviously wouldn't if they were still in the race of course, but assuming they fell out, if they could save $3-4 million by moving Peavy midseason, I don't know why they wouldn't. And they will be, but likely in the same way they're in the race at midseason most years. That is to say, not really in contention, but close enough that people won't admit it.

Addison Reed wins MILB Best Overall Relief Pitcher Award
Milkman delivers replied to macsandz's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 03:13 PM) Well it does. But anyways, congrats to Addison, he definitely deserves this. Looking forward to him being in Chicago all season next year. Alex Rodriguez wins 2003 AL MVP, but the Rangers stink, right? But, congratulations to Reed! I have high hopes for him. -
Is Thad the gayest name ever? I propose that it is.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 03:41 PM) A Cub fan wrote that. I say "yeah" to Cardinals fans. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. I knew that the second I saw the Cardinals thing, too

LET'S MAKE A LIST OCTOBER '11 - FAVORITE SPORTS MOVIES
Milkman delivers replied to knightni's topic in SLaM
QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 04:07 PM) I left it off my list as well. I basically put my list in order by how likely it would be that I would stop and watch it if I found it on TV while channel surfing. I actually saw it on TV the other day. I watched it for a few minutes and realized it's actually a pretty boring movie. True, it's just "your favorite" movies. I try to be a little objective when I do these things, though. Weighing movies that I really liked and those that are really good but perhaps I wasn't that fond of. -

Why wouldn't it be on your lists, though? I mean, even I voted for it despite hating Notre Dame. -
QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 02:50 PM) Friday's generally aren't good ratings nights. I think it's all about starting the games on time, and not having delays that turn the competition into a joke. And why would they want a trophy ceremony at 2am? That's just not good for the game. They made the right call. I agree that they made the right call, but I'm saying that possibly having a game on Friday came into play. Yes, Fridays might not be the best for ratings, but for a Game 7 of the World Series, I would have to believe that more people would have the ability to and would tune in.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 02:50 PM) In Cali, Colombia, in a hotel room by myself while I was chaperoning my students for a Model United Nations conference for the country's international school students. Thanks to ESPN Deportes and DirectTV, I was able to watch every single game live. But I still remember most vividly waking up one morning after we'd blown a huge lead to the KC Royals...and the Crede homer off Riske...my g/f at the time and her brother were watching their favorite program and I kept making them flip back during the commercials and you just knew when they won that game the tide had turned. But I do remember playing some really crappy games against the Tigers early in that final week...thankfully that rocket hit off Jenks the final out in the clinching game didn't fly into the RF corner and over Konerko's head or we STILL could have ended up blowing the whole thing. And the Grady Sizemore blown catch in the sun in KC, that was the other big turning point in the final 2 weeks. Then we just steamrolled through the Indians (I think they still had wild-card aspirations at the time) at Jacobs Field and flew into the post-season. I was still in college at the time, and in Massachusetts. When the Sox played their scrubs to start that final series, Red Sox fans were livid that we were "intentionally" playing our B-team in order to prevent Boston from making the playoffs. It was as thought they felt we owed it to them to play our hardest instead of setting ourselves up for the postseason, you know, like they would obviously do for us if the situation were reversed. Looks like we came out pretty well there.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 02:08 PM) Got the entire series on DVD. Best gift that I ever got from a girl. Does everyone remember where they were when Uribe made the throw to end it? Man, I was on Division outside a bar. I remember everyone looking around in stunned disbelief. It seemed like everyone was thinking "Did the Chicago White Sox really just win the World Series"? It was almost surreal... like a dream. It took awhile, but everyone finally warmed up to the fact that the Sox won it all and it got pretty crazy on Division. Chicks were flashing everyone. I have them, too, although I bought them myself. All I got for Christmas that year from anyone was White Sox stuff. And yes, I remember exactly where I was, exactly what I was doing, and exactly how I reacted. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 02:30 PM) always an ironic quote coming from a guy still living well off the 85 team Damn, beat me to it. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 02:31 PM) Did anybody else have any rituals they used before the playoff games. I remember always going to the same place for lunch. And then in the ALCS I starting changing into the same t-shirt, jeans, and baseball cap before the game. And after each win I would reward myself with some candy (candy gets even better when you get closer to Halloween...the candy companies bring out their best stuff). ...Guess it worked. Oh yeah I prayed also during the games (''please please strike him out") and I never did this before or after..lol. I sat in the same exact spot in the same exact position after they won the first game of the ALDS. I wouldn't get up to pee or anything (thankfully I never peed myself), and of course I prayed like everyone else. Hell, I wouldn't even blink when a pitch was about to be thrown.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 01:53 PM) Coach Ditka says "losers and cowards live in the past my friend!" Mike Ditka saying that is that absolute epitome of irony. His entire life is based on living in the past. It's so ridiculous that it's comical.

I'm betting that this move was also about getting a game on Friday (possibly). I'm sure it wasn't the entire basis, but when someone said there is a good chance for rain on Wednesday, I think they jumped at the opportunity to move it back.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 02:26 PM) BASEketball was at least about a sport...a messed up one, but a sport nonetheless. I agree about The Big Lebowski. Bowling was merely a backdrop. And just because they show poker on ESPN doesn't make it a sport. Pawn Stars in on the History Channel, and even though it's a great show there's nothing historical about it. I've only seen a few episodes, but people are often pawning historical things. -
So when can we start focusing on the 2012 Sox?

I probably took about 5 years off of my life during that postseason. I was on edge for every single pitch. It would be nice to go back in time with some confidence and enjoy each game

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 01:15 PM) I'm enjoying the fact that no one is debating that BASEketball isn't a sport. Well, it originated with basketball. So even with that, after having The Big Lebowski on the list, it'd have to count. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 01:16 PM) It was my #1 vote. Same here. -
I'll be watching the Sox Pride DVD later.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 12:44 PM) Yes and no. Athletically they are but to me, what differentiates sports from skills is interaction with your competitors. It's not cut and dry but with the activities I mentioned, you can't really affect the other person at all (pool you kind of can). It's just who does better. At least with poker, there is a direct interaction with your adversary and what you do or don't can and does affect the other. Like checkers, chess, or backgammon! -

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 12:40 PM) Bowling, pool, golf, darts, archery etc... are more skills than sports to me I can agree to that, but they're all much, much, much, much, much closer to being sports than poker is.
