  1. Ugh, Cowley's vendetta against the White Sox FO continues.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 01:48 PM) Their profit margin is pretty consistently towards the higher tiers annually. They also do reinvest those profits, so they really aren't profits in the traditional sense. They usually pull in $20 to $25 million a year, but that money goes right back into the team, so the profit numbers are very misleading. I guess I don't fully understand it. We talk about how the Sox reinvest most of their profits back into the team, and they're also one of the most profitable teams in the game. Does that mean other teams are always working at a loss or consistently lowering their payroll?
  3. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 01:53 PM) Is Epstein really going to hire Sandberg? Doesn't seem to be his type of manager, I would easily see him hiring Martinez. Imagine the slap to Sandberg's face that would be. For that reason alone, I don't see Theo doing it.
  4. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 12:34 PM) she might be posing for playboy I'd check the pictures out online. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 01:03 PM) I never heard of this happening, but I can fathom a reason why...if you're nearly 6 miles up in the atmosphere, you're quite a ways above normal ground level, and that would affect the survival rates of meteors...less atmosphere to travel through. I can't tell if you're being facetious or if you think I was serious. That was just an example of something extraordinarily unlikely happening.
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 09:29 AM) Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was KW's plan. He basically replaces Tony Pena I've thought they would keep Frasor since the day they acquired him. They like the veterans out there.
  6. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 09:16 AM) This seems so bizarre Like saying, "Wow, we really didn't give a s*** for the last 4 years"?
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 09:01 AM) I never liked Francona as an option all that much, and would have said absolutely not to Cooper. Martinez and Alomar were 2 guys I at least wanted to see interviewed. If they screwed the interview or clearly were unprepared...fine, then move on...but there's every reason to expect those guys to be effective managers from day 1 right now, and with Ventura I'd call it a roll of the dice. We didn't even do the due diligence on them. Hell, you could even make an argument for McEwing.
  8. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 12:28 PM) Do you know anything about running a business? I ask because you don't seem to see the full picture. Tickets to the Sox are on the lower end of the scale in MLB, far lower than across town in the same city. And payroll is very high. The Sox simply don't make much profit, less than a lot of clubs, though they at least aren't losing money. Most of the money is plowed back into payroll enhancements, and the payroll has risen from about 50M to about 120M in 6 years. Also just as advice... one can always park somewhere else and take the train to the park if you don't like that level of cost for parking. Haven't the Sox been named one of the most profitable sports franchises? I like to think that they put a lot of their money back into the team, but I've always suspected that they're making money hand over fist.
  9. I cannot believe a single person can fall into $61.16 million of debt. I cringe each time I charge anything to my credit card.
  10. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 10:27 AM) That's awesome. +1
  11. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 11:10 AM) Does anyone REALLY want to see Lindsay Lohan naked? Maybe 7 years ago, but not now. Are they out there? I'm certainly not a fan anymore, but I'll still take a look...
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 25, 2011 -> 08:51 AM) The reason I said that we'll figure it out in my lifetime is...I think there probably is life in the oceans on some of the Galilean/Saturnian satellites, and there probably was life existing at one point on Mars. Just a question of getting there and finding the evidence. 2-3-4 occurrences of independent "Life" in one solar system makes a pretty compelling case that it's not very unique, if you can find them. Yeah, I have no doubt that there's life out there. How evolved/advanced is up for debate, but again that's not really what I meant. I mean something like a guy climbed to the top of Mt. Everest and then a meteor hit him. What is the most unlikely thing to happen that anyone's heard of?
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 10:19 PM) Well, there was finally a happy ending for Thome in CLE, although the Phillies were an NL team. And you might want to revise your prediction of the Cardinals winning the World Series, Milkman. Game 6 will be Colby Lewis vs. Jaime Garcia Certainly the Cardinals would be in trouble with either Lohse/Jackson for Game 7 against Harrison but just as likely Holland (3 days' rest) after last night. Perhaps. Losing that game that they basically had wrapped up in St. Louis is probably going to cost them.
  14. If people want to keep America the best country on Earth, they better locate a time machine.
  15. This thread was fun a couple of days ago. Now I don't even want to read it anymore.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 03:52 PM) The Cardinals simply won't be signing Mark unless he's close to the league minimum. Either they're blowing $28 million a year on keeping a fairly good 1b or they're rebuilding. I was talking about Pujols.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 03:41 PM) Only teams I see Pujols leaving Cardinals for are Yankees, Red Sox or Cubs. No way could I picture him going to a small market team. I really don't see him going to the Cubs. Besides their budget constraints, I don't believe he'd go to the most hated rival of his team. It sounds cheesy, but I seriously don't think he'd do it. He'll just end up re-signing with the Cardinals after they win the World Series.
  18. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 03:33 PM) I like the Waterboy a lot, don't get me wrong but Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison are on another level to me when it comes to Sandler movies. Billy Madison is my favorite, by far.
  19. I'd like to see the Blue Jays sign Pujols. Wasn't that discussed?
  20. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 03:07 PM) Easily. Which isn't to say that both aren't hilarious.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 03:02 PM) And let's face it, Marlins fans are hoping for some HUGE names like Pujols, Prince or CC. If Buehrle is their "big name" signee, they won't be happy. Are they really thinking they'll land some of those guys? QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 03:03 PM) The sad thing is, that was close. Anyways, 23 of the 29 are on two people. That is kind of amazing all by itself. And that was in a really good year for Buehrle.
  22. OK, I have an odd question. I got the idea from Futurama. What do you think is the least likely thing to have ever happened? Life itself is probably the best answer, but I'm thinking about one particular event.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 02:52 PM) If rumor is true that he might go to the Marlins....then oh boy. They have some awful defensive players, and management won't be able to use a 6 man rotation to protect him. I'll be very disappointed if he signs in Florida. It doesn't make any sense with all of the things he's said in the past, except that it'd be the National League. He wouldn't have much of a chance to win there, it's much further from home than Chicago, and it probably wouldn't even net him more money.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 02:47 PM) He gave up 11 I was exaggerating for emphasis He definitely gives up a lot, or at least it seems that way.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 02:44 PM) You want to be amazed more? The White Sox gave up 41 unearned runs last year, 2nd fewest in the AL and 4th fewest in the MLB. Matt Thornton, a reliever, gave up 29% of the White Sox unearned runs. As much as I love Buehrle, he probably gave up about 50% of the team total. I've said for a while that the guy is the king of allowing unearned runs to score.
