LET'S MAKE A LIST OCTOBER '11 - FAVORITE SPORTS MOVIES
Ah, the Waterboy. That was Sandler's heyday. I know some people hate all of his work, but that earlier stuff was hilarious. It's sad that he's strayed so far away from that. And now I think I forgot to put Happy Gilmore on my list.

"Major League Ready Talent" Only
QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 10:51 AM) Do you have to live in Chicago to know that the White Sox do not draw if they are not good? The guy constantly talks about "I'm not sure what fans in Chicago think, but..." and he goes and makes a post like that.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 01:42 AM) That's exactly what I meant by "not real". I think he WAS a real person, as the pictures that the police department has of him proves (preview of next week), but I think he is dead and now Colin Hanks just imagines him there. Dexter sees Harry, has conversations with him, and uses him as guidance. I think it's the same effect on Colin Hanks. Just like Dexter said, the only thing he "believed in" was his dad, and I think Colin believes in EJO, as you guys refer to him. Yeah, I was just trying to put it into an exact context. QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 10:15 AM) Even if it is a rip off of LOST, I hope we get more flashbacks. What?

2011 Films Thread
QUOTE (qwerty @ Oct 24, 2011 -> 12:37 AM) Well i always suggest a japanese film called ''after life''.... clearly not the after.life with liam neeson. Plot: After death, people have just one week to choose only a memory to keep for eternity. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165078/ Trailer: http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi1605697817/ =================================== Das experiment... 2001 you very well may have seen this. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250258/ Plot: The movie is based on the infamous "Stanford Prison Experiment" conducted in 1971. A makeshift prison is set up in a research lab, complete with cells, bars and surveillance cameras. For two weeks 20 male participants are hired to play prisoners and guards. The 'prisoners' are locked up and have to follow seemingly mild rules, and the 'guards' are told simply to retain order without using physical violence. Everybody is free to quit at any time, thereby forfeiting payment. In the beginning the mood between both groups is insecure and rather emphatic. But soon quarrels arise and the wardens employ ever more drastic sanctions to confirm their authority. Based off of a true story. This was remade with adrien brody recently. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250258/ =========================================== The diving bell and the butterfly. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401383/ Plot: The true story of Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby who suffers a stroke and has to live with an almost totally paralyzed body; only his left eye isn't paralyzed. Think about what you just read. I will continue adding to this during the night... these are just some i like... and think others would enjoy. I'll add those. I remember reading about that experiment in a Sociology class in college.

You know what, perhaps EJO is to Colin Hanks what Harry is to Dexter. Maybe he did teach him in college, fell off the face of the Earth (was killed by Hanks or committed suicide in some religious thing), and now that's how Hanks pictures his religious "conscience" or something.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 11:35 PM) I think whoever said they think Travis' mentor is not real is completely right. I made sure to pay attention to it tonight, and it was most obvious in the scene where they went out to get coffee. The waitress never once looked at him, and there was only 1 table setting there. And then in the scene where the girl is tied up in the house, she freaks out once Travis comes in, and she again never looks at the other guy, even when he touches her hair (which I noticed he touched the back of her head where the camera blocked any actual movement of her hair). I think that's a great prediction. It's a good theory, but they seemed to be insinuating rather heavily that he's the professor that was fired. I'm also pretty sure that Colin Hanks has referred to him as a professor before. But yes, that could easily be stuff thrown in there by the writers to keep us off guard about him being imaginary. I just doubt it at this point. This season has definitely been better than last year, and I don't mean that simply because last year was awful. This season is pretty good so far. The only thing with Dexter is that it gets a little too over-the-top for me often. I still like it, but I suspend disbelief an awful lot now. Boardwalk Empire was pretty good. I'm glad that they've given Richard a larger and continuous role. I certainly didn't see them scalping the old guy in the wheelchair, though it was definitely cool along with Eli drunkenly taking out that other conspirator. I find myself pulling for both of those characters most of the time. The central characters could all go f*** themselves in my book (Nucky, Jimmy, and Margaret).

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 23, 2011 -> 01:17 PM) That's why I hate the "rebuilding" people. A lot of them think rebuilding means totally demolishing the team. That won't cut it in Chicago. Sox have to try to compete/win. Seriously, what would you know about that?

Walking Dead was solid again today. They're not leaning much on the zombies, which is a good and bad thing. Overall, it felt like nothing really happened this week.

I've always disliked the word "horrid", mostly because I think it's too much like "horrible" and it just sounds unfinished.

Worst Farm System in Baseball
QUOTE (gatnom @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 04:33 PM) Exactly, since proven players never fail, it makes no sense to invest less risky amounts into unproven prospects when you can just throw millions at proven players. Surefire way to get to the playoffs more than once every three years. Just ask the Cubs, Angels, Orioles, etc.

What's Next to Discuss?
QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 04:19 PM) No, I'm a Sox fan first and foremost. I love Ozzie but I can't control his leaving. I also loved Chet Lemon, but he went to Detroit and then I moved on. Too bad we haven't had a good center fielder (hitting/defense combined) since he was here. Except for 2010 and maybe 2005.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 01:05 PM) Anaheim is a much better choice than somewhere like Baltimore that wanted him before. Even if he doesn't get a lot of power, it is high profile, high payroll, and a much bigger profile.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 04:24 PM) Thanks, fathom for the answer. Reasonable discussion. I just think it may be hard to bunt a ball thrown that hard. Even if he bunts it, it coulda been right to the pitcher. Kylie IMO you should know better as a mod than to start your post by blasting me like that. How does that add to discussion on a website by blasting me? Then I respond and it's a war that you started, not me. Your first paragraph is an invitation to a fight. Sad. I am assuming u are referring to my polling my friends in KC a few times about WhiteSox matters. If not, my bad. For what it's worth, perhaps LaRussa never would refer to him as his "closer" for that reason. That he knew there might come a time the former catcher might not have it and he might have to yank him. I am not a LaRussa hater. I think he's good baseball mind. To say the very least. Tony La Russa is one of the greatest baseball minds and managers in the history of the game. If, as you say, Ozzie is a sure-fire Hall of Famer, they should create a Tony La Russa Hall of Fame specificially for himself made entirely of gold and diamonds.

I keep thinking that he asked what everyone's least favorite Coen brothers movie is when I see people responding to qwerty's question (I think because he mentioned that they have some stinkers in the same post). Each one I see, I'm thinking "this person's crazy" because I love the movie they mentioned.

2011 Films Thread
QUOTE (qwerty @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 02:40 AM) Gimme a genre or two and a time frame to work with. I mean i watch just about anything and everything... there is not a genre or time period i dislike. I'm talking back to the squaw man and the jazz singer... which was the first talkie starring the world's greatest entertainer al jolson. About the squaw man, it was the first full feature length film filmed in hollywood... first film cecille b demille worked on... and also the first and only time a director/producer worked on three different adaptions of the same movie. Anyway for the time being, i suggest 3 idiots, my favorite character in any film i have ever seen is done by aamir khan, who plays the lead idiot (or is he?) rancho. I don't want to say much else, other than one other thing. Aamir khan was 44 at the time of release and he convinces you he is that of a mere teen. To portray someone 25 years younger to the point the audience is utterly convinced, it takes a special talent. In my honest opinion, aamir khan is a top 5-10 acting talent in the world. This is not just me saying it for s***s and giggles, as i have seen 12 of his films up to this point. Bollywood films, when done right, just have a entirely different feel to them, almost magical. If anything else, they tend to have beautiful women flaunting all over the screen. I'll add that one. Another one I really enjoyed recent was Trollhunter, and the commom theme between a lot of these movies is a small budget. So how about that? Movies that did a lot with very little.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 20, 2011 -> 11:28 PM) Umm. So tonight Tony gets owned by Washington? LaRussa makes THE WRONG choices in the pen late. LaRussa calls for bunt in ninth; Punto can't get it down and whiffs. Managing is overrated. Players win games; Rangers won this one late. The godlike Tony got schooled by Washington. Why? Cause Texas won. I won't mention what the reax on this board woulda been if our manager called for a ninth-inning bunt and we couldn't get it down like Punto. PLEASE CALL SOMEONE A RACIST SLUR AND GET BANNED ALREADY.
