Robin Williams has been nominated for four Oscars (I believe), and won one of them. The man is a very accomplished actor. Also, I just watched In The Bedroom. It was very good, and my man-crush on Tom Wilkinson continues to grow.

QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Feb 7, 2009 -> 06:46 PM) I am surprised it pulled a PG-13 rating. There was basically no blood and the deaths were pretty clean.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 7, 2009 -> 04:11 PM) The thing is, he was such a stud since he was young (still arguably the best high school player ever seen) that you wouldn't think he would need an edge to be as great as he already was. That's what I think he was stupid in that regard. Well... there's still Frank and Griffey who, so far, are clean and still the best players in our era. But we should just try and move forward on this. Baseball is a game of edges, and eventually/most of the time, folks take them. Ritalin, scuffed balls, vaseline, red juice, cutting the bases, spitting on the ball, watering the basepaths, drying out the field with gasoline, pine tar, telescopes in CF, blinking lights, foot tappers in the 3rd base box, infield decks, corked bats, holding the runners belt, stealing signs from the dugout, tilted baselines... HGH, PEDs, steroids. What are these things?

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Feb 7, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) I like the way you're put together. I usually cheer for news stories that aggravate and upset a large number of people. This last week I've been especially satisfied with Phelps smoking out of bong and Arod testing positive for steroids. Just prepare yourself for the manufactured outrage from the media. We'll probably be overwhelmed with these types for the unforeseeable future. Best part of all this? Canseco was right, yet again, and it's going to KILL some people on ESPN to admit it. I wish someone like David Ortiz was accused of taking steroids by Canseco just so people would squirm in their seats at the thought of their fugly DH shooting up roids. When I read Canseco's book right when it came out, everyone I knew said I shouldn't believe a word of it. It seems like the guy is proven to be right again and again, and yet nobody apologizes to him for telling the truth (because he did it for the money), when they had no problem smearing him constantly when he first released it. I now think it wouldn't be that bad for Pujols to go down soon. That way, Thomas, Thome, and Griffey are basically the only 90's sluggers that wouldn't have been caught or suspected. All played for the White Sox and did it clean...that would be a great story.

QUOTE (ChiSox420* @ Feb 7, 2009 -> 02:03 PM) How does everyone think this will go over in comparison to Michael Phelps... will A-Fraud will lose sponsorships? Personally I feel steroids are much worse the recreational marijuana use... and maybe with the proximity of these two stories some ppl will be able to see that too. Who cares. One plays baseball, one swims. People only "care" about swimming once every four years, and then forget.

I just got back from Taken. It's basically the prototypical revenge flick. I enjoyed it a lot and I'd recommend it. The only real flaw is that it was PG-13. This was most likely done to draw a larger audience, but it really would've benefited from an R rating.

QUOTE (The Bones @ Feb 7, 2009 -> 03:54 PM) I don't know about that. Slumdog seems to be a lock for Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay. Heath Ledger is a lock for Supporting Actor. I guess that the other acting races are pretty open though. Penn vs. Rourke, Winslet vs. Streep, and Supporting Actress I have no idea. I wouldn't say that Ledger is a lock. Rourke is more of a lock, I'd say. I'm sure Streep will win again, but this actually might be the year for Winslet.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Feb 7, 2009 -> 10:07 AM) Not really, he got critical acclaim for Crash I think he just knows where his bread is buttered when it comes to making money. Every couple of years he does a serious role and is actually pretty good when he puts effort into it. It's true. The guy definitely has some talent, but he knows how to make his money.

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Feb 7, 2009 -> 09:24 AM) I feel the EXACT same way about Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy. They ruined their careers wit stupid movies they made. For Robin Williams, that movie "Jumanji" was pushing it, but every other comedy movie he made after that was disaster. I think he's better at playing disturbed characters now like he did in "One Hour Photo" and when he guest starred on an episode of "Law and Order: SVU" As for Eddie Murphy, his career went down the drain after making stuuuupid movies like "Dr. Dolittle", "the Nutty Professor", "Pluto Nash", and "Daddy Day Care". The problem with Eddie is that he's trying to entertain kids now instead of sticking with golden roles like he did with "Beverly Hills Cop" and "48 Hours". He's doing too much "forced comedy" with "cute" stuff rather than real funny sitiational comedy like he did early in his career. It seems like Chris Tucker is the new Eddie Murphy nowadays, because the type of comedy that Chris Tucker did in the "Rush Hour" series is the exact type of comedy that Eddie Murphy is an expert at and should stick with. Anyone else agree? "I" "disagree" with that "assessment."

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 06:23 PM) Two people (BobDylan is really hard to count because it's a remake and the only movies I've seen him admit he's liked are NCFOM and Changeling) = "so many?" It has a score of 89 on the tomatometer. I hate western movies, but after renting this I decided to buy a copy for myself. For the record, I don't dislike the movie. I'd just put it lower than most of the westerns we've discussed.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 05:03 PM) I did like Open Range, but put it below any of the three I mentioned (3:10, Unforgiven, Tombstone). I saw it. Very good acting and characters, costumes and sets were also excellent. Writing wasn't so good - way too much air, like watching a Mamet film. And the whole production aspect was horribly over-artsy, for no other purpose - felt like the movie Thin Red Line. That's a tough call, between those two. Tombstone was most of a very good movie, but the last third just took it from great to good for me. Still a fun movie to watch though, and I loved the way they shot the OK Corral scene. Also, I thought you were talking about the best westerns of this decade or something. Unforgiven and Tombstone wouldn't fall into that category. And with the other two, I put Open Range higher than 3:10 to Yuma. And Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday was probably the best movie character ever.

THE 2008 SOXTALK AWARDS THREAD
Milkman delivers replied to knightni's topic in Soxtalk Awards Archive
I was just asking what the award was. I'm not sure of its intent. -
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 03:25 PM) Did you see the Assassination of Jesse James? I liked it better than 3:10 although Pitt was mediocre. Affleck stole the show for me in that one. That one completely slipped my mind. Great movie.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 08:57 AM) Unforgiven was indeed an excellent western. Tombstone, I enjoyed a lot, but I think its not enough to be "great". In fact, its really two films. They changed directors while making it, and it shows. The first half to two thirds was good, not really classic in style but very well done. Good character stuff, great fun too. Then about two thirds in, it becomes a modern-age action flick set with older costumes, and that takes something away from it. Not sure which director was which, but, the whole ride of the avengers aspect got pretty ridiculous. Still a fun movie, but, not as good as Unforgiven, or 3:10 to Yuma, or even Silverado. There are also a few movies out in recent years that aren't westerns per se, but are very akin, and very good. The Missing, for example, was a good film. Seraphim Falls was decent. Tombstone was one of the best westerns ever made. It was "directed" by Cosmatos. But, when he died, Kurt Russell came forward and said that he actually directed the whole thing, and used Cosmatos' name to draw attention to it. It was an agreement between the two to keep it secret until Cosmatos was gone. Tombstone > 3:10 To Yuma

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 08:51 AM) I can't believe so many people disliked 3:10 to Yuma. I thought it was one of the better westerns made in the last decade or two. Not that there have been a ton of them made in that period, but, there are some. I'd say Open Range was better.

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Feb 5, 2009 -> 08:45 PM) Only question about Frank & the HOF is if he's gonna be 1st ballot. Agreed. I think he clearly deserves to go in on his first try, but I don't have nearly enough confidence in the voters to actually follow through on that. A lot of voters are just plain jagoffs.

QUOTE (The Bones @ Feb 5, 2009 -> 08:45 PM) So, do you honestly think his work in American Psycho and The Machinist was bad? If so...I would like to know who would have done better with those roles. Also, you are comparing him to 2 of the best actors around (PSH and DDL). Not a whole lot of actors can do what they do. I admitted he is not the best of the best but he certainly is not a bad actor. I would say is is above average at what he does. He's also very dedicated to his work. He lost 60 pounds for the Machinist then had to play Batman just months later and gained 100 pounds for that. If he is good enough for movie people like Roger Ebert, Christopher Nolan, and Werner Herzog then I would like to know what makes you say he is bad actor. Do they have awful taste as well? Don't get me wrong. I don't think he's bad, but I don't see him as anything more than pretty good. He definitely is extremely dedicated and a very method actor. And Ebert has been very lenient with his critiques in the last few years with his illness.

QUOTE (The Bones @ Feb 5, 2009 -> 08:03 PM) So did I. I don't understand why Bale is getting so much crap around here. Do I think he's one of the greatest actors of our time? No. But he is certainly not bad. I would say his work in American Psycho and The Machinist is his best. Next, I would say he was good in Rescue Dawn, Yuma, and The Prestige. Then, you have the 2 Batmans and I'm Not There which weren't his best performances but neither of which took away from my enjoyment of the movie. And people in the film industry obviously think he is alright because he continues to get pretty good work. I can't wait to see Public Enemies. A lot of terrible actors continue to get plenty of work. The fact that they continue getting hired says nothing about their talent, but plenty about the American public's awful taste.

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Feb 5, 2009 -> 07:07 PM) I consider myself a pretty tough critic when it comes to actors, hate keanu reeves, and I enjoy almost everything Christian Bale does. The only movie that I thought was horrible was 3:10 to Yuma... and one of my other favorite actors, Russel Crowe, was in it too.... so blaming that one on the script. Again, you're basing his ability on the movies he's in. Once he can carry a boring movie, as Daniel Day-Lewis and Philip Seymour Hoffman did in There Will Be Blood and Doubt, respectively, then I might start thinking he's a very good actor.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 5, 2009 -> 05:23 PM) He's as much in the upper echelon of actors as a Brad Pitt or a Tom Cruise ever was... what is your criteria? Ability to make himself cry? I think he's done that. Ability to land the lead high-grossing films? Only the highest grossing ever... a wide-range of accents and roles? He's done that too. To say he's not in the upper echelon of current actors is to ignore reality. Christian Bale is the hottest thing in Hollywood right now. He's starved himself for roles, he's bulked up, he's played an every man, he's played the man... he's done it all. This is as much an indictment on the current chaff the acting population is made up of right now, but regardless, Bale is incredibly talented, but if you prefer your Phillip Seymour Hoffman's that's your prerogative. Every American accent he does has a lisp that he can't overcome. And to the second bold part, yes. I prefer very good actors like Hoffman.

QUOTE (BobDylan @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 05:40 PM) I didn't know a Terminator movie was capable of this. Christian Bale is as much a hack as the DP and people need to get off his wiener. He's an actor, nothing more. And not that great of one either.
