Edit Huck Finn to eliminate n***** and injun?
IamtheHBOMB replied to Texsox's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 01:50 PM) Here's the question though... How many of the kids getting the correct version wind up understanding Twain's logic here? I flat out didn't. I thought it was just the style of the time. I would hope that English teachers would be able to convey that to their students. -
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 01:46 PM) Holliday's not a bad fielder. I hate how that one ball he took off the crotch in the NLDS gives people the impression he's bad at fielding. With the s*** you and 3E8 are constantly throwing out, I figure that there has to be a defensive metric that compensates for an outfielder taking a liner off the dick. Find that metric and find peace, my friend.

Edit Huck Finn to eliminate n***** and injun?
IamtheHBOMB replied to Texsox's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 01:16 PM) FWIW, n***** Jim is probably the most positive character in the book, and Twain's use was intentional. Twain was an outspoken critic of racism and imperialism and a proponent of civil rights throughout his writings, particularly in "To the Person Sitting in Darkness". That is the worst part about all this. I guarantee you that the vast majority of the people calling for the edit don't know jack s*** about Mark Twain, the time period in which the book was published/written or the concept of satire. Context (verbal and social) is incredibly important when reading or discussing a piece of historical literature. -
QUOTE (qwerty @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 02:07 AM) I am a big fan... and i think it absolutely kicked the expendables ass. The expendables was one of the biggest let downs in years for me... but then again that is to be expected since i followed it from it's infancy. Seagal's last scene was hilarious to myself and those who i watched it with. We watched that scene a couple times in a row after the initial viewing. Funny stuff. I personally have been on an independent film kick... i have watched over 15 or so in the last week. I just love the feel of an indie film. Any exemplary films out of that bunch?

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 10:59 AM) The worst would probably be Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson while in Arizona. I also thought about that pairing, but Clemens' brand of asshattery far surpasses anything those two have done. Johnson does seem like a dick, but Schilling just suffers from diarrhea of the mouth. In any case, Zambrano has a new cooler punching buddy.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 10:52 AM) Did Wells pitch with Clemens in Toronto? That would do it. I thought that initially, but they were traded for each other in 1999. They both pitched for the Yankees in the 2002 and 2003 seasons, but Wells wasn't the 2 in either of those rotations.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 10:16 AM) Garza should do great in the NL, but that's a lot to give up for him. Gives the Cubs maybe the most unlikeable 1-2 starters in MLB history. You're talking in the same rotation, right? I've spent the last five minutes trying to find the biggest dbag to ever pitch behind Clemens and haven't come up with anything so far.

Isn't Heyman generally known for being a mouthpiece for Boras?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 27, 2010 -> 05:47 PM) Or he chose to display it? Kobe was 10 times more hated than LeBron before the Decision. It's not as if a switch flipped and LeBron suddenly became a douche. He has always been a "grade A cocksucker". The Decision just cemented the fact that he is an idiot with absolutely no foresight. Kobe also has a massive ego and has done some sketchy things, but at least he isn't a complete moron like LeBron.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 27, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) What so perplexing is that he basically became a Grade A cocksucker over night. Nobody truly disliked him, maybe the hype, but not him, until the Decision. Do you honestly believe that he became that overnight?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 23, 2010 -> 03:21 PM) Saw Tron... It was about like what the rating at rotten tomatoes is....almost can't give it a thumbs up or thumbs down, in between. I would say, it was worth my time to watch probably. In some ways, the special effects were a little disappointing, although I watched on PC and not in theatre, so that makes a big difference. There were some really cool action sequences and then the move kind of got bogged down in the middle with too much philosophy. I liked Olivia Wilde's character and her futuristic costumes at least. She was more than just eye candy, she was an actual interesting feminine role who was in some ways the centerpiece of the story intellectually and emotionally. Michael Sheen was also excellent. What did you think about the soundtrack?

QUOTE (qwerty @ Dec 21, 2010 -> 07:57 PM) Yes, and it's extremely entertaining, as far as i'm concerned. You won't be able to get enough of oldman. This is a whole different world in comparison to why you have grown to like him. He is as close to rosencrantz in this film as i have ever seen out of him... yet so far away still. Simply put, he puts a smile on my face whenever he is on the screen. Give it a shot... unless you want to miss out on something every ''huge'' oldman fan should see. Seriously, i want feedback. What's your favorite Oldman role?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 18, 2010 -> 11:19 PM) The Kids Are All Right...excellent Red...surprisingly better than I expected, certainly a lot better than Expendables, although that movie had its moment as well Legend of the Guardians....somewhere between so-so and fairly good, from what I read the 3-D experience was what made it worthwhile and I just saw it on a PC Invictus...excellent, it's unfortunate they couldn't do a movie like Gandhi about Mandela though, he's (Morgan Freeman) the central theme of the story, but he doesn't quite carry the movie 100% Still want to see Conviction (H. Swank), 127 Hours, True Grit, The King's Speech, Inside Job, The Black Swan, The Fighter, The Company Men and Blue Valentine....I guess Love and Other Drugs just for gratuitous Anne Hathayway scenes, not unlike that Eva Green movie that was NC-17 way back when. If it's not worth the time to watch LaOD, just warn me. Will also try to wade through Eat Pray Love and Due Date. Has anyone seen Wendy and Lucy (Michelle Williams), A Single Man (Colin Firth), Secretariat or the Diving Bell and the Butterfly? Thumbs up or down? Why would you watch that unless you were being forced to?

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 12, 2010 -> 12:01 PM) I know people will bring up this being a PR hit, but I don't think that would be an issue for KW/JR. KW's/JR's attitude seems to be more about winning than pleasing the fans. If a Buehrle trade made is better, I don't think he would hesitate to make it. Although, that is the question. Can we get enough in return to make it worthwhile? I agree with this, but it's silly to think that public perception of the team doesn't matter to them. I can only recall one instance where KW traded a very popular and productive player to another team -- Rowand for Thome (a prototypical sell high deal).

QUOTE (shipps @ Dec 12, 2010 -> 11:33 AM) Uh....this will not happen. This. I think it is safe to assume that Kenny is listening to offers for every player on his roster -- at one time or another. With that said, the White Sox would not get a fair return for Buehrle. Couple that fact with the massive PR hit we'd be taking and the one year remaining on his contract -- this rumor doesn't make a lot of sense.

QUOTE (qwerty @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 03:49 AM) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1187043/ I had a lot of fun with this film. This is a very original story, considering it's from bollywood, who are known for their remakes of movies from other countries. Foreign film, subtitles, 2 hours and 40 minutes long? Only one i can think of watching it on this site is IamtheHBOMB. What a shame that is, as there are great messages in this film. Don't be scared off by comments on imdb on imdb's message boards, because those that knock it barely seem literate, so it's no shock it went way over their heads. The main idiot rancho (who just so happens to be a genius) has just become one of my favorite movie characters of all time. I've had this saved on my Netflix queue for months, but it is still unavailable. How were you able to watch it?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 02:45 PM) You have to be one hell of a hitter to play 1B or DH in the American League. He does not have the athleticism to play 3B, despite a couple lucky plays there last year, and I don't see a conversion to corner outfield in his future. I don't see him ever being disciplined enough to man such a position in the AL. Are you calling Dayan a fatty?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 02:28 PM) All prospects suck, right? I'm not one to get caught up in the promise and potential of minor league players, but I think it would be a huge mistake to trade Viciedo. I don't need to harp on his age or his tools -- there is plenty of that going on already. Just give him a chance to develop. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 02:35 PM) I'd love for the White Sox to get some value for him as we're in win-now mode and I have absolutely zero confidence that he will be a difference maker in the bigs. Really? Zero confidence? Care to articulate why?

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 01:52 PM) Ran the lineup of 1. Pierre 2. Beckham 3. Rios 4. Dunn 5. Konerko 6. Quentin 7. Pierzynski 8. Ramirez 9. Morel through a lineup optimizer with Bill James' optimistic forecasts (although these were released before they knew where Dunn would go). Link That lineup yields 5.15 runs per game. Over the course of a year, that's 835 runs, 80 or so more than last year. The best lineup (with Gordon leading off and Dunn hitting second) yields 5.23 runs per game. That runs per game number only applies if the "optimal" lineup plays every game, right?

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 12:53 PM) But how do you "lose" instincts? He was rated well on defense all through his career and a fly ball in AA is a fly ball in the MLB. Assessments of his defensive abilities in college and in the minors really don't mean jack s*** at this point. Quentin misjudges flyballs and liners fairly often. That has nothing to do with shoulder, wrist or foot problems. It has to do with positioning and reading the ball off the bat. I don't know what his problem is. He should be at least an adequate defender. Maybe getting moved between RF and LF messed with his head? QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 01:19 PM) He's got that "oh s***" look on his face too much to be a good defensive player. I saw this exact thing a bunch of times - especially when he was coming in on balls into shallow RF.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 01:58 AM) Quentin's degrading fielding skills are definitely the results of injuries. After watching him last year, I came to the conclusion that he doesn't have the best instincts. He would get bad reads pretty often and get caught in between on liners into RF. His bad defense can be attributed to more than just physical problems.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 01:09 PM) Honestly, it wouldn't take that much money to make me go to Arizona. I can really see where Paulie would be coming from, if he decides to jump ship. I don't think he will, but it wouldn't shock me. wut? The guy already lives there in the offseason (and preseason). Looking at it from a baseball perspective, why would he want to play on a s*** team in the same division as the world champs?
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 12:22 PM) Anaheim has wanted a team for a long long time and Orange County is a major marketplace with tons of major businesses. In general, Orange County people don't feel all that associated with Los Angeles. The Clippers should be playing at the pond but Sterling didn't want to because he lives in LA. Anaheim has also been trying for a while to get an NBA team and at various points in time have tried to bring in another football team. Do you think the Clippers would draw more fans if they were based in Anaheim rather than LA?
-
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 12:41 PM) Olney tweets DBacks had virtually no dialogue with Paulie. I find it hard to believe that Konerko would want to play out the string with a team that is clearly rebuilding. So, Olney's tweet is not surprising. Though, I would really like to know what PK is looking for in terms of a contract.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 08:19 AM) Dunn also played in Cincinatti which is as big of a launching pad as USCF. He may hit 50, but you could say that about him every year. Chances are you are correct and he hits right about 40. I think he may go crazy one year and hit 50, but I'm in agreement with you guys that he will hit roughly 40 every year -- which is awesome.
