NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 10:22 AM) And 9/11 was an inside job. The only person i've ever heard equate Jordan's gambling with some kind of Stern reprimand is Bill Simmons. And we all know what kind of access/inside information he has - not much unless it's about the Celtics or post-2005. It would make no sense for Stern to do ANYTHING to Jordan in the 90's. He was growing the brand of the NBA more than anyone could have dreamed. I think it's entirely reasonable for MJ to walk away after dominating the sport for three years AND having a major life altering event like the murder of his father. The thing with baseball was strange, but MJ's a strange, competitive dude. I think it's reasonable to assume that his ego just got in the way and he thought of the whole thing as another challenge he could master. And his retirement in 98 is even more understandable - issues with Krause, he had to follow up on his threats not to return if Phil didn't, three straights championships with the last one being the most grueling, his brand/businesses were booming, he had nothing else to "win" in basketball, etc. I didnt say anytthing about 98, I know what that was about. believe what you want, im not trying to change your mind

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 10:05 AM) Maybe that was the problem. They didn't do their research and had no clue that Tanaka is an X-Box guy and hates Nintendo. HERE IS A 3DS! COME ON! XBOX IS WATCHING YOU

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) College is a lot different than HS. Can't coast anymore. Think him at college could be the best storyline if done right. Not only college, but MIT. I agree, this could really be a great storyline for him. Im worried they are gonna rush it and kick him out of college because his roomates girlfriend hates him and rats on him

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 09:59 AM) The Mariners seem to be very dysfunctional, however. Between their jackass GM and their outgoing President, it would surprise me if they were the ones unprepared. lol, they just came in and said "Nintendo owns us. Sign here"

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (G&T @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 09:31 AM) KW never talks like this about a guy he is going to sign or acquire. It just doesn't happen. I think it possible that there's a trade possibility we haven't heard about and he is using Tanaka as a smoke screen. There's just no benefit to talking about it like he has and it isn't his MO. Sure he does, he did the same thing with Peavy. Swung and missed on the first attempt to trade for him, and told the press "we will revisit this later", and then got him a few months later

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 09:10 AM) Pump those brakes Cub fans. Actually its really nothin just Tanaka's assistant saying no decision has been made nor travel plans. Thus this is still wide open. [1/17/2014] Masahiro Tanaka: still nothing new to report by Gen on Jan.17, 2014 @ 11:49 pm, under NPB Masahiro Tanaka's assistant Yoshiki Sato spoke to reporters today and said, "There is still about a week left to go so I think things are not yet over. The [travel] schedule has not been set." When asked if he expected negotiations to drag out until the last minute, he replied, "That is not something we are trying to do. The agent is handling everything and hopefully things work outs according to what [Tanaka] wants. Nothing has been decided." New York reads this as "HE HAS CHOSEN THE YANKEES! HURRAH!"

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 08:20 AM) Didn't the Bears come out and say they aren't running a 3-4? They kept Mel Tucker. Tucker has experience running both 4-3 and 3-4, so it really doesnt matter that he was retained. All I keep reading is "hybrid 3-4", so it seems like they keeping it as an option

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 08:20 AM) When Jordan left to play baseball, Reinsdorf honored his basketball contract and paid Jordan $4 million to be a minor league player. Still, he played baseball. It was so bizarre, I still remember that summer after they won their first three-peat and his father was killed, then the leadup to the following season. It still makes absolutely no sense at all

QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 12:46 AM) Haha yeah I'm sure the integrity of the game was more important to stern, the owners, and everyone who made untold amounts of money through Jordan than the ridiculous amounts of money Jordan generated Just as plausible as the GOAT walking away from all of that money in the middle if his prime, right? And then choosing to play minor league baseball when he got that itch to compete

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 01:30 PM) We have entire cities devoted to gambling. Our society celebrates it. Why do you keep bringing this up as a moral deviation? Many people connect his retirement with gambling, ie. the s*** got out of control and Stern told him to pull it together.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 01:12 PM) Nothing tops Kevin Costner trying to hit a Kennedy accent for horribleness. How about Kevin Costner in Robin Hood? Midway through the movie he is like "f*** it, im not doing this pretend accent anymore"

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 12:23 PM) I felt the same way when I heard Hugh Laurie for the first time. No idea he was English for years. Also with Rick(andrew lincoln) from Walking Dead. My wife pointed it out because she likes the movie "Love Actually". I cant detect the slightest bit of english accent when I watch Walking Dead. Its kind of funny how english actors are able to suppress their accents, but a large portion of american actors cannot fake the english accent.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 10:13 AM) To try and make this as short as possible, bWAR tells more about past performance, but fWAR tells more about future performances. It's more of a true talent indicator. Like for pitching, fWAR uses Fielding Independent Pitching numbers to figure in the calculation, whereas bWAR uses runs, and team wins. You get more outliers it seems with bWAR than fWAR. I think the large majority of the Sabr community would say that fWAR is the better number to use overall. you dont have to keep it succinct. Expound all you want, that is why this thread was created

Rosenthal: Tanaka to Yankees
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 09:42 AM) The MLB, for "industry development". If they really wanted to dissuade people from going over the limit, they should make the luxury tax go to revenue sharing. Then maybe the Yankees/Red Sox would think twice before throwing a couple million to help out the Rays stay competitive. Wasnt it like this before the recent CBA renegotiation? I swear they had that in place but teams were getting pissed that owners like Jeff Loria and David Glass were just pocketing the money instead of investing it in their teams
